Welcome and glad you joined.
is an istick 50w an upgrade from an Evod vv 1600?
Yes.
You should be able to increase your vapor production with the Evod in a number of ways. Use a liquid with more VG present is probably the easiest.
When you produce more vapor one tends to change/sacrifice other parameters such as taste, amount of e liquid used and wear/tear of the battery, heat production may increase etc... Vaping is a balancing act that you have to decide what your looking for.
Suggest you visit another vape shop and ask if someone can show you how to increase vapor production with the equipment you now own.

howdy folks, quick question: is an Istick 50w an upgrade from an Evod vv 1600?
Yes.
  • It has a 4400mAh internal battery.
  • It will allow you to use tanks with coils down to 0.2Ω
A guy at a local shop said my unit was pretty outdated.
It may be considered to be outdated only in that you can buy other mods that also offer variable voltage/wattage AND "temperature control" for around the same price.
I'm definately looking to produce more vapor.
To get more vapor you may need to upgrade your tank. You can change your PG/VG ratio and use your current tank but it may not give you the amount of vapor you want.

In general:

Lower Ohm Coils Will:
  • Heat The Coil Faster
  • Produce More Vapor
  • Drain The Battery Faster
  • Use E-Juice Faster
  • Produce A Warmer Tasting Vape
Higher Ohm Coils Will:
  • Heat The Coil Slower, Which Will Produce “Less” Vapor
  • Provide A “Cooler” Tasting Vape
  • Use Less E-Juice
  • Prolong Battery Life

I suppose now the question is which tank do you prefer (for this unit)?
If you like a M2L (mouth-2-lung) draw consider a Aspire Mini ll size Nautillus full size) or eLeaf GS Air M (both tanks). You will be able to to adjust their airflow so you can get more airflow than your Protank if you want it. But you won't be able to direct lung inhale. (Video reviews below). Both of these tanks use +1.0Ω coils.
I prefer direct lung inhaling and a warmer vape (with subΩ coils) so I use other tanks. The Kanger Subtank is a good one. It comes with a 1.2Ω coil and a 0.5Ω coil and a RBA base (for rebuilding your own coils). Here is a review (skip to the part on the tank).
I have a protank mini 3 right now (im assuming it will work also on the istick).
It will, but only if you get an iStick that comes with a 510/Ego adapter (usually is found in the iStick 50 watt kit) or you can purchase separately.
