Back to the electric Car for a minute I think everyone is missing the blatantly obvious!
Electric Cars need a standardized battery that can be swapped out at a recharging station, a lot like a propane tank! It seems so simple to me, all cars use the same battery(like a propane tank) you don't own it, just buy the charge from the recharging station. When it's dead you swap it for a charged one, simple.
We can convert gas stations to recharging stations & they can own & maintain the batteries.

It solves all the electric Car problems no more range anxiety no more charging at your house, just swap and go, like a propane tank! I think it can be that simple

I like that idea, but the difference in my mind would be changing out a poorly maintained battery for a properly maintained one or vice versa. The propane tank(s) are essentially the same - although when I bought a brand new one from Sears years ago I used to take it to the RV place to refill mine instead of swapping for one at walmart because I knew mine was brand new and didn't know what I'd be getting in the swap. That was years ago, now I just swap after years of refilling it. I could be wrong? but that's my thinking.

Well I see my post regarding propane tanks was already made, serves me right for replying before reading the rest of the thread

I saw something about electric cars and the vaporware theory... Solar panels not being feasible due to lack of output vs consumption in a car application... I also saw something where they theorized wireless charging cable being built into future roadways (which I think would NEVER happen, at least not in our lifetimes) my god think about the cost and undertaking that would be! WHOA.

Battery technology hasnt advanced at the same pace as the other electronics - Take cell phones which is a great example... back in the day of B/W phones with considerably small (less capacity) batteries (even when they were NiMH or worse) could (and would) last a couple of days... Now with smartphones, bright oled displays, and the chip sets and batteries with Lithium technology and by comparisons HUGE capacities now, your phone most likely can't survive forgetting to charge it the night before. I charge mine sometimes twice a day.

What needs to happen IMHO for electric cars to be a true replacement to a gas vehicle is a battery or power source that can be charged or recharged instantly. There were these battery packs that were sealed, and when you opened them and exposed them to air they would rapidly charge to full cap. Maybe a battery where you could drop in a solution of something and the chemical reaction would cause the battery to be recharged very quickly (minutes). Or just some new technology (that may be around the corner?) where a battery of a reasonable and manageable size would perform 10x the current battery technology does.

I honestly don't think CURRENT battery physics and tech can reliably replace a gas powered car... I wouldn't want a car that could only go 60-100 miles or whatever on charge then be stuck where-ever I was. That's just not realistic.

I heard quotes up to $4000 for Tesla charging station installs at home. You need to adjust your rates

They weren't the fast charge stations, just 50A 120/240V outlets.

No offence, Tpat, but what happens at night? I love the ads for solar power, 20000 watt systems. Yeah, 20000 watts in 24 hours with full sunlight for 24 hours. Then solar panels are being made under, shall we say, not the most environmentally friendly conditions "off shore".

I did say a fossil fuel Generator, the solar skin was a supplement to that for continued charging while parked away from charging station as part of a supporting system of technologies to contribute each in their own part to higher efficiency and lower operating costs.

Again, real world practicality gets in the way. I'm planning a trip later this year that will involve driving all night. The solar cells just wouldn't be practical. Sure, they're great if you leave your car parked on the top level of a parking garage all day and it's a sunny day, but what about the ten floors under that rooftop level? Or what about the days that are overcast and rainy? The real world is cruel and highly impractical at times.

Batteries have come a long way, no question. They have a lot longer way to go before electric cars will actually be practical and affordable enough to make a dent in the fossil fuel powered market. Maybe that laser etched graphene capacitor will work out, but scaling it up to handle the loads needed for a car might prove to be a real problem.

yeah...theres a ton of technological, chemical and economic problems that have to be overcome but things are changing at a faster and faster pace every passing year...I think tesla moving closer to the main stream will have an impact on boot straping matters a little closer and every nudge moves towards the inevitable..its going to be a while before anyone can get there but once the economics work it will happen quickly in metropolitan areas I would think...what really concerns me is the position this will place the electric utility companies...considering the track record it really makes me shudder depending on more less locked delivery companies..at least oil has real competition..I know our local utility has screwed us in spite of supposed de-regulations and savings that never appeared even after paying surcharges for years leading up to it...I can just imagine what they will do getting their hands around our necks for transportation as well
