Oh yes, I remember the blackout. Hard to believe it has been 16 years now. Luckily I was just outside of the affected areas. So I don't have any hardship stories like being stuck in a elevator with Miss August for 18 hours or anything. :vapor:

At the time I was Managing all the Fault and Performance systems. Based out of our NOC/CO location. The NOC had 4 massive screens that we displayed different information. One was a map of Ontario cell locations, and sure as day, we'd see sites run out of generator gas and go down, then come back up when refilled. It was like a rolling wave of outages. Then when they wouldn't come up, the NOC would get a call from an RF tech that the generator had been stolen. We had a big boardroom and all the top execs were camped out there the first night. All figuring out what updates to be given to the media, and how to 'frame it'. They kept asking my team to create and run special types of reports from different Network Elements.

Gotta love ya BillW50. You are true to yourself. Talking about Brass, here's my almost 50 year old Brass with alternating Red and Blue (original) leather. The one on the right. I won't bore you with more detail.

Yesterday was the 16th Anniversary of the great Power blackout in Ontario and beyond. @SlickWilly probably remembers it. I remember it as clearly as 9/11. I was in a big ... meeting (doing a presentation) with all the top execs of TELUS (national cell provider) and had just finished the sentence to the #2 guy "Who do you think you are ... GOD" then fade to black, and walk down 14 flights of stairs.
We had bought the Z3 the day before, and picked it up 2 days after this. Very little sleep in between.

In the end, it all started around Dayton Ohio.

We were also just outside the blackout area but I do remember it. I remember seeing videos of block parties of people trying to cook up all the food in their freezers on BBQ grills and have neighbors eat it up rather than have it spoil and go to waste. All that frozen food would have sat around on the curbsides thawing out becoming a pile of stinking garbage.

My fear is a long term power outage in the dead of winter, everything in our house runs on electric. I can't remember a time, since we've been here the last 36 years, when we lost power for any more than 24 hours max and that was not in the winter, knock on wood we've been lucky.

got to agree and, unfortunately, down here we've had black-outs lasting for several days both in summer and winter. so, finally investing in a generator 18 months ago still feels like a worthwhile expense ;)

Ice storm 2009, we were without power for seventeen days and it was bitterly cold. There was no melting during those seventeen days which is most unusual for central Kentucky. I had a propane fire log, an electric blanket and a Honda i2000 generator with fifteen gallons of booze free gasoline. I hope you never have a winter power outage like that in the winter. Mrs CMD and my daughter fled the scene for a motel room. I stayed, went to the motel in the morning, showered and went to work. Then home to make sure the place was secure, the pipes didn't freeze and slowly begin the clean up from all of the downed trees, what a mess!

We thought about getting a generator in case we lost power in the winter but it would have to be a big one to keep enough heat to prevent water pipes from freezing plus run the frig and freezer. Not ever having extended blackout before and weighing the cost/benefit of a generator I just can't justify it, add in maintenance to keep it in tip top shape from just not being used.

If it happened in the winter we could just put the food outside or pack it in coolers with snow and ice from outside. I could shut off the water and drain the pipes and hot water heater. I have a few propane heaters and a bunch of 20LB propane tanks I keep filled because I use them to heat my shop. And if it was extended long enough, we could shut down the house and just stay at one of the hotels my wife runs, they all have generators or we could stay with my daughter next door, they have a wood stove. Even though I love them all, the thought of living with both my wife and daughter again, ugh... Plus the two grand daughters, being out numbered again four women to me and the son in law, I'd go to the hotel and I bet the son in law would want to join me.

No rush, not something I need right away but if anyone runs across the full size Merlin's on a good deal please keep me in mind, or if anyone has one or two they don't use anymore and want to part with them shoot me a PM. I have two, really should get a couple more to have on hand.

I guess you have electric heat, Willie. We got a generator years ago, just before hurricane Sandy. It's a 6500 watt one from Harbor Freight. I run it every now and then to keep the battery charged, although it has a pull start as well, and it's never failed to start easily. It will run just about the whole place, although maybe not with everything running at once. The water heater is electric, and can also be from oil, so if that's running we have to watch how much other stuff we run.

We were without power for a about a week from Sandy. We've also lost power for multiple days in the winter from snow storms. I've learned to keep a large supply of gas, with stabilizer, just in case. The generator can run for at least a week, non stop, with my stash and, if we're careful, probably close to a month. Worst case I can siphon some gas from the pick-up or car in a pinch. We need power for water as well as refrigeration. Heat is by oil but we still need electric to run that as well. I've got heat backed up with a propane heater and a stash of 20 pound cylinders. In fact I just topped everything up getting prepared for the winter, just in case.

i went with 22kw which handles pretty much everything in the main part including 3 geothermal heat pumps as long as they start up in sequence ;)
felt pretty good when we lost power for 2 days in the early part of the summer - lately i find this southern heat and humidity intolerable.

Yeah, I find the southern heat an humidity getting intolerable, too...and I'm in southern NJ :hubba:

When I came back from filling the spare gas cans, yesterday, I was going to start working on a project outside. The heat, humidity and infrared from the sun were just too much. It's kind of cloudy today so I'm going outside now to get started.

During the big ice storm it was hard to find a gas station that had power. I was part of running about 50 electricians doing repair work for 3 weeks straight and you have to have gas to run all the trucks. Electrical supplies were coming from all over the country and I was constantly going from one supply house to another as the trucks rolled in.

After the ice storm or '09, I informed Mrs CMD that I would never complain about heat again. I have kept that vow. It is becoming an easier vow to keep because the older I get the colder I get.
