Yea...you can't play PokemonGo on 4.2.1. Android 5.X is the current and your device may not be eligible for it (if you have not been offered an update from your vendor, they have not released it and probably don't plan too). 4.2.1, so a three year old phone?

calling all android users ;) - i'm trying to load an app from google play but my device is deemed incompatible :?: checked my version and it says 4.2.1 - supposedly up to date!
googled and found there are later versions but the updates contained in those are supposedly minimal ..............
Contact app developer?

It could be the hardware in your device is not compatible.

Whats the app?
Whats the phone model?

ETA: Nevermind, I see others have already responded.

nypl app e-reader ;)

it's a hisense 7pro - no problem whatsoever with kindle and overdrive
Yeah, Hisense is not known for putting out many updates. A newer version of Android would have to come from them. Someone more mainstream like Samsung provides more OS upgrades.

Updating it would involve "rooting" it and forcing a new ROM onto it. Not your cup of tea as I read your interests. I would be glad to do it for you, but suspect your path lies in possibly getting a new tablet.

Sorry Tibs. Looks like the guys are all over this one. Those "off the beaten path" Chinese brand devices are generally considered disposable in the industry. You "upgrade" the entire device...not necessarily the software on it. Even though there's nothing wrong with it.

Heck Apple does the same thing. They stop updating the ios and before long an older device can't install apps anymore because the ios is too old. That forces owners into upgrading the hardware.

* phone geek rant skip if you have no interest *

Latest stable release of Android v6 (marshmallow), upcoming release v7 (nougat)

Because there are so many manufactures of Android device the fragmentation is horrible. Where since Apple controls all the hardware and the software, their fragmentation rate is minimal by comparison. And yes, I'm an Android guy right now.

I've had my note 4 for nearly 2 years, and this might be the first time I don't upgrade to a new phone after paying it off or a generation of hardware change.

I'll have to wait and see what the note 7 actually does and offers, but just speed isn't enough anymore. And the iPhone 7 (this years) will be sadly disappointing, hopefully next year's iPhone <insert #> SHOULD be impressive as it will be the 10th anniversary of the device. (fyi)

Ok, I'm done.

Or you could buy a Nexus and get the latest updates faster than any other device. I've had my Nexus 7 (2013) for a few years now and it's on 6.0.1 with the latest security patches from 7/5/16. I'm surprised it wasn't EOL'd yet.

the sero 7pro had the better review at the time ;) but that's water under the bridge :p and since i use the thing only for reading i'll stick with it as long the kindle and overdrive apps work!

Newer versions of Google Apps have been known to crash with older Android OS's.

You should look into upgrading the rom. It's not as hard as you might think and there's tons of info how to do it. Most devices have video step by step.
