I reboot every week or when ever Microsoft tells me that I have to reboot. I backup the system and files daily. Sunday these backups get distributed to a couple of off site places. Then I shut the whole thing down and all is fresh Monday morning.

ah! but there you're wrong - ms will force the upgrades sooner or later ;)

one other thing i forgot to mention that happened with my recent fiasco ;) i'm usually a firm believer in a restart when something goes wrong and the first thing i did when the start menu did not come up was to push the power, waited 2 minutes and started up again. much to my surprise it came right back on as if i had put it to sleep. hit the power button again, held it down and went to sleep again. next morning it started up again without rebooting. that's when i realized i could not get into connections or settings. i contemplated unplugging and taking the battery out but did decide against it because i hate going online with a tablet. so looking for help became my first priority as long as i still was connected to the internet. ;)

My laptop has a setting that lets me choose what the power button will do; either sleep or power off. Do you think that might have been a problem?
I have had "10" updates alter some settings, there is no pattern, ryme or reason to when this happens. But on two occasions, the update turned on the microphone and camera. There is now electricians tape on the camera and a well padded band aid over the microphone.

And lastly, sometimes Windows 8/10 eats its own start menu, its contents are bascially stored in an XML file, unlike previous versions. I personally never use the default start menu, the first thing i install on my own, or any PC i setup/fix, is Open Shell (formerly classic shell), a free Start Menu replacement...gives you back a functional Windows 7 Start Menu by default, and easy access ot traditional Control Panel, which i still prefer for the bulk of config/troubleshooting tasks over the serpentine mess that is Settings, with 30 million things sprayed around as many (arcane) menu options

Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu

Thank You! :thumb: I've missed the 7 Start menu, this will be great! I finally made the move from Win 7 to Win 10 a couple months ago, I still boot back into 7 once in a while but I finally got 10 set with all the goodies I had in 7 including Window Media Center! Using the 10 compatibility mode I've been able to use all the old hardware and software, took some time for me to tweak everything but I finally did get everything working. Still not a fan of 10, there are some things that are a bonus but I'd rather have 7, after a few more months I'm sure it will feel more like home.

I've been using the Bitdefender Total Security package with the VPN service, Bitdefender Total Security 2020 - Anti Malware Software it works well. One thing with 10, Bitdefender will popup asking me if I want to allow this or that to connect to the net and send files or packets, a whole hell of a lot more then I ever got with 7. It's nice to be able to block a lot of that crap! Big brother. :sneaky:

Sitting down, facing forward.
A shut down and restarting can't hurt anything and can only help clear out fragmented memory. I have yet to use the "sleep" function on a craptop. My "big" desktop gets a reboot every week. It runs 24/7/365 with video surveillance but I do like to clear the memory caches every week, just for efficiency. I've got updates throttled way back on that and chose if and when I apply them. The craptop updates whenever MS decides they found some more flaws to fix.

How you and mama doing? Everything good on the home front?
We got a dusting of snow last night, everything is white out there, not that it matters, NY was shut down today. And not that, that matters, my .... is glued to the chair again today. I've been improving a little bit everyday, but yesterday I went to walk out to the garage just to get outside and on the last small step off the walkway my right leg gave out from under me and I greeted the ground. It happen so fast I had no time to react, pretty sore today from the fall but I haven't seemed to gone backwards as far as strength in the leg which is a good sign. I just need to be a lot more careful and give it more time before doing too much I guess, glad it didn't happen on the top step of the porch.....

We're hangin' in there. Lots of the essentials and goodies so it's not really very different other than not running out for odds and ends. I've got to make a run up to the hospital for a regular visit on Wednesday and am not looking forward to walking into a petrie dish known as a hospital. If I could avoid going, I would, but I have to go. I'll wear a mask and gloves going in, at least until I see how things are inside. I don't have to be in any areas where "normal" patients are, but who knows what's changed with all this commotion. When I get home the clothes will go right into the washer and I'll go right into the shower.

We're keeping busy working around the outside. I've worked my way. almost completely, through a pile of branches, twigs and weeds that was accumulating for a couple of years. Added to that was all the stuff we raked up and there's still more raking to do. Made a heck of a lot of mulch out of that. Once I'm done with that it'll be time to start weeding the flower beds. Then I've got to work on the front lawn and actually get some grass growing. The big trick is to keep it growing.

Just take it easy and let your body recover on its own. Don't push things and try, hard, to keep the shiny side up!

One more thing, for Willie. Is there any way you get get Cuomo to stop bloviating every day?

There is probably no way to accomplish that legally. He has visions of DC in his future. I do know that I never want to be between him, a camera or a microphone.

I wish I could, what a meat head, he LOVES the camera. He'd fit right in on The Soprano's. He talks just like the gangster he really is, like father like son. Oh we are so blessed.... King Cuomo

I was shiny side up last night, I was mooning the moon.

I did make it to the mailbox yesterday for the first time in well over a week, it was half full. But to my surprise I had vape mail from China! A month ago I order a few different kinds of ni clapton's, they still haven't restocked the ni200 clapton I love so much. I've got those wires to play with, hoping one of them will work with TC and give a decent vape.

Good news! Today was suppose to be my quarterly follow up with the pain doc, they called last Friday and said the doc wanted to do either a Skype chat or phone call visit because of the Corona mess, I picked the phone call. Just got off the phone with her, she's gonna send in a script for another round of steroids, yes!! I know that will give me another boost and hopefully get me by until things return to normal, I really don't want to go under the knife and be in the hospital now. Now I can relax, keep the family at home and take it easy.

Not much here.
A couple of days ago I set up a laptop that was discarded where I work. It was originally a Vista 32 bit with 2 gb ram so I put in Win 7 32 bit, shortly after I put it back where I found it.
Last night I set up an older Chromebook and gave it back to our maintenance guy who had acquired it the same way. Interesting device, too bad Google doesn't support it any more. No updates.
Tonight I will attempt to set up an HP DV7-3164cl, also was discarded. It may have no hard drive so I'm taking one with me to work. This one has at least 4 Gb ram (I hope it's still there)
