I reboot every week or when ever Microsoft tells me that I have to reboot. I backup the system and files daily. Sunday these backups get distributed to a couple of off site places. Then I shut the whole thing down and all is fresh Monday morning.
hanging in, willy!Morning everyone, how everybody doing? Adapting to changes? Everyone feeling OK?
ah! but there you're wrong - ms will force the upgrades sooner or later
one other thing i forgot to mention that happened with my recent fiascoi'm usually a firm believer in a restart when something goes wrong and the first thing i did when the start menu did not come up was to push the power, waited 2 minutes and started up again. much to my surprise it came right back on as if i had put it to sleep. hit the power button again, held it down and went to sleep again. next morning it started up again without rebooting. that's when i realized i could not get into connections or settings. i contemplated unplugging and taking the battery out but did decide against it because i hate going online with a tablet. so looking for help became my first priority as long as i still was connected to the internet.

And lastly, sometimes Windows 8/10 eats its own start menu, its contents are bascially stored in an XML file, unlike previous versions. I personally never use the default start menu, the first thing i install on my own, or any PC i setup/fix, is Open Shell (formerly classic shell), a free Start Menu replacement...gives you back a functional Windows 7 Start Menu by default, and easy access ot traditional Control Panel, which i still prefer for the bulk of config/troubleshooting tasks over the serpentine mess that is Settings, with 30 million things sprayed around as many (arcane) menu options
Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu

my power button always turned the laptop offMy laptop has a setting that lets me choose what the power button will do
A shut down and restarting can't hurt anything and can only help clear out fragmented memory. I have yet to use the "sleep" function on a craptop. My "big" desktop gets a reboot every week. It runs 24/7/365 with video surveillance but I do like to clear the memory caches every week, just for efficiency. I've got updates throttled way back on that and chose if and when I apply them. The craptop updates whenever MS decides they found some more flaws to fix.
One more thing, for Willie. Is there any way you get get Cuomo to stop bloviating every day?

And don't forget Chuck, we are blessed with good ole Chuck too.... I should have moved from here when I was younger, too late now.
Just take it easy and let your body recover on its own. Don't push things and try, hard, to keep the shiny side up!
