OK, how about some wicking tests? Thanks to @B2L for the cotton samples.

For the moment I am just going to number the samples, with #1 being on the left, and so on.

  • All samples were exactly 0.11g of fiber, except sample #5 which was so dense it wouldnt have been long enough.
  • All samples were properly fluffed according to their type.
  • All samples were placed in a 3mmID spring, akin to one of our coils.
  • All samples were placed in a rig that kept them separated and also not touching the walls or anything else
  • Jar was filled with a 50/50 mix of PG/VG with some pro grade food coloring
This is the separation rig which was placed over a glass jar:

And the race is on.....

Im calling #3 the winner, and #5 the 2nd place contender just because of how much juice was trapped in the fiber.

1-Koh Gen Do
2-VCC Vapers Choice (was probably the easiest to work with)

3-Rayon, big box from Sally's
4-Hemp
5-3mm braided Ekowool, considered the most premium silica
6- Native Wicks Platinum Blend

Now keep in mind that this is only HALF the story. With wicks we care about 2 things, capillary action, and flow. This only demonstrated capillary action. I am still pondering a good protocol to test flow.

Really though, from what I saw, anything but #4 and #5 would work just fine.

As promised, a follow up to the wick test. The first test was mainly to show how poor silica is compared to modern materials. The context being that poor silica performance might have significantly contributed to why Dr Kurt's Gen 2 results were so bad.

On this test I took the 4 best from the first round and matched them head to head.

Test Conditions:
  • 50/50 PG/VG mix
  • each wick trimmed to about 1.5 inches
  • 0.11g of fiber each
  • Coil (spring) was 3mm ID
  • All set in a rig that kept them suspended without touching the walls.
Samples from left to right are:
  1. VCC Vapers Choice
  2. Rayon
  3. Native Wicks Platinum Blend
  4. Koh Gen Do organic cotton pads (outer skins removed)

Results:
  • Initial Capillary
    1. Rayon
    2. Koh Gen Do
    3. Native Wicks (actually a very close 2nd IMHO)
    4. VCC Vapers Choice

  • Capacity: (defined as g of fluid held in the wick after 1 hour))
    1. KGD - 3.22g
    2. Native Wicks - 2.69g
    3. VCC Vapers Choice - 2.13g
    4. Rayon - 1.72g
Overall winner, you choose, by capacity it is KGD, by initial capillary it is rayon. By these two factors weighted together I would say KGD is the more efficient performing choice.

I am sticking with my rayon. Other factors like flavor, longevity, and scorch temp still make this my fave.

Neither of my OG Aromas had the airholes aligned with the center of the coils, more like 25° off. I fixed that by sanding off a little material from the bottom of the tanks with some 300grit sandpaper. I put the sand paper on a glass tabletop and rubbed the tank on it until it aligned correctly when screwed back onto the deck base. It only took about a dozen light strokes, maybe just 1-1/2 thousandths of material removed.

I bought spare decks and keep a couple built, ready to go so they get exchanged between tanks, never know where the holes will align. But it only takes a small amount to turn the tank to align, always less then 90 deg, not enough to break the seal at the o-ring.

Holy Toledo!
I have enough Mizers for life. I chose them because I knew I could live with them, and at the time nobody knew what the FDA would actually do. I am covered for life, even if I never buy another vape item.

You really can't go wrong with the OG mizer :) The supreme & now the new Supreme V2 is only a marginal improvement! The direct Air to coil & from the bottom juice flow was the biggest advancement in Tanks, since all most the beginning IMO :)
I really wish they would put out a single "big coil deck", kind of like the Pharaoh has.
IMO would be a nice option :)

You can use the old no-post deck which fits & works great for single coil, I sometimes like it better bc you get air hitting the coil from both sides.

To connect the 60 to escribe with the ZNA I made a patch cable, I used what I could scrounge up at home, I'll come up with something better but for now it's works. I used a piece of an old IED ribbon cable and JST battery connectors. I can tuck it inside the void above the screen when not in use, when I need it I can pull it out, put the battery tube back on so it's running from an 18650. I'm not sure how much the cable will tollerate when charging the battery, that's why I was looking to turn charge off in escribe. I'll only use a fully charged battery to limit the charging until I come up with a better and permanent patch cable.
