As promised, a follow up to the wick test. The first test was mainly to show how poor silica is compared to modern materials. The context being that poor silica performance might have significantly contributed to why Dr Kurt's Gen 2 results were so bad.
On this test I took the 4 best from the first round and matched them head to head.
Test Conditions:
- 50/50 PG/VG mix
- each wick trimmed to about 1.5 inches
- 0.11g of fiber each
- Coil (spring) was 3mm ID
- All set in a rig that kept them suspended without touching the walls.
Samples from left to right are:
- VCC Vapers Choice
- Rayon
- Native Wicks Platinum Blend
- Koh Gen Do organic cotton pads (outer skins removed)
Results:
- Initial Capillary
- Rayon
- Koh Gen Do
- Native Wicks (actually a very close 2nd IMHO)
- VCC Vapers Choice
- Capacity: (defined as g of fluid held in the wick after 1 hour))
- KGD - 3.22g
- Native Wicks - 2.69g
- VCC Vapers Choice - 2.13g
- Rayon - 1.72g
Overall winner, you choose, by capacity it is KGD, by initial capillary it is rayon. By these two factors weighted together I would say KGD is the more efficient performing choice.
I am sticking with my rayon. Other factors like flavor, longevity, and scorch temp still make this my fave.
