I think what may have happened is that an update was loaded and half applied, there was a recent as in this week update. That screwed things until you rebooted and either completed the update or the new registry entries took effect. It wouldn't hurt to shut down rather than put it to sleep. The memory does get cleared, completely that way for one thing.

Correct, i cant tell you the number of times in 30 years ive solved someones "dire" PC emergency on a helpdesk (or just my mobile to a numpty friend) by asking them "when did you last shut down or restart your PC"

Most people are like "what do you mean, i never turn it off"

Me: "Please restart it"

Them: "Oh its working normally now"

As good as Windows memory management has gotten over the years, its still not completely able to free up and make free RAM thats previously been used, and if you leave your PC on for months at a time (lets excuse the Linux "uptime" junkies trying to out e-peen each other) then expect issues at some point.

Also theres processes that cant be completed while files are in use, that updates set to be scheduled when the PC is restarted, if you dont restart the PC, guess what doesnt happen...

And lastly, sometimes Windows 8/10 eats its own start menu, its contents are bascially stored in an XML file, unlike previous versions. I personally never use the default start menu, the first thing i install on my own, or any PC i setup/fix, is Open Shell (formerly classic shell), a free Start Menu replacement...gives you back a functional Windows 7 Start Menu by default, and easy access ot traditional Control Panel, which i still prefer for the bulk of config/troubleshooting tasks over the serpentine mess that is Settings, with 30 million things sprayed around as many (arcane) menu options

Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu

Bonus, the you should restart it every now and then also applied to smart phones...a friend of mine needs to hotspot a lot of the time for internet access

Francti phone call one day...

Him: "I cant hotspot to my phone"
Me: "Whens the last time you restarted?"
Him: 5 months ago
Me: "Restart it"
Him: "Working"

Sermon given

Never heard about the issue again

So there is a country that's claiming no Covid-19 cases. What if that country developed it awhile back and vaccinated all their population by putting the vaccine on their rice and after everyone there was good to go they let the virus loose. Just thinking here out loud but........

I used to do that way back when, before automatic updates were a thing. I think my record for my main workstation was something like 3-1/2 months. But since automatic updates, I tend to reboot once a month, although I will usually defer the reboot until the weekend after the updates get downloaded.

THIS!!!

Should add one more category to the "Meh" group, "Boomers" (us old farts). I have yet to hear from someone 60+ be in a panic, guess cause we've seen worse. I just wonder, what are we going to do next flu season? More people die from the seasonal flu's then from this Corona so I guess we'll have to shut the country down every year now eh?

This is my wife with her laptop, when it has a problem she yells for me to come fix it. I'll walk out into the other room, ask what it's doing wrong, she'll tell me and I'll ask her "Did you try rebooting it?" always "No". 95% of the time I'll reboot it and it will be fine, the other 5% is because she unintentionally changed something or she left it running with the screen upright and the cat walked across the keyboard again. This has been the same story since she's had a laptop, about eight years now. I don't mind, I end up getting "good boy" points for fixing it and I can use all the points I can get cause I burn through them quickly.

ah! but there you're wrong - ms will force the upgrades sooner or later ;)

one other thing i forgot to mention that happened with my recent fiasco ;) i'm usually a firm believer in a restart when something goes wrong and the first thing i did when the start menu did not come up was to push the power, waited 2 minutes and started up again. much to my surprise it came right back on as if i had put it to sleep. hit the power button again, held it down and went to sleep again. next morning it started up again without rebooting. that's when i realized i could not get into connections or settings. i contemplated unplugging and taking the battery out but did decide against it because i hate going online with a tablet. so looking for help became my first priority as long as i still was connected to the internet. ;)
