I tried this, only the non resistor wire heated up.
I had more of a problem watching this guy than Rip

If the wire is too thin, it will heat up instead of the mesh. Same thing if the mesh resistance is lower than the wire resistance. The mesh resistance should be higher than the wire.

A couple of days ago I realized FT sold the same generic HID headlight conversion kits that I first bought.
$25.47 9005/HB3 35W 3200LM 4300K Neutral White Car HID Xenon Lamp Kit (Pair) - DC 12V / w/ 2*ballasts at FastTech - Free Shipping
Although not pictured these come with the ballasts. Just like this one:

Now these even for $10 are not satisfactory for headlight use, they work but not well enough. They would be OK for fog lights I guess.
Now with them replaced with a Morimoto kit I couldn't be happier with their performance.
From what I can tell is the bulbs from the cheap kits are fine it's the cheap ballasts that blow.

This is the good ones: 9005: Morimoto Elite HID System I The Retrofit Source

Any network gurus? Wednesday we had a major internet (verizon) outage all around the area. Most towns and folks were back up by dinner time. We were back on-line but sporadically all Wednesday night. Would work for 2-5 minutes then be down for 20-40 minutes, then back up for a few minutes, etc. Went to bed hoping all would be fixed by Thursday morning.

Nope, next day same problem. After much 'hang/wait' time I got through to a tech. He ran diagnostics and said the network was good to my area but he could see my router, so the router must be bad. I doubted that and even said if he waits will come back for a few minutes and then go away again. He still claimed the router was bad. So overnighted a new one to me.

Set the new one up Friday morning and 'yep' same problem. Could only stayed connected to the Web for a few minutes at a time. After way too much time trying to contact VZW support again, got a tech that again ran diagnostics ,,, couldn't find anything wrong so he dispatch a technician for a house call. I'm expecting them to show up tomorrow morning.

I spent 45 years in the computer field but never really got involved in the network area.

Just curious what/where in the flow from my router to the WWW a problem like this could be happening and what it might be. Hope they are sending knowledgeable tech.

I don't have Verizon but Xfinity. Sounds like you did all the diagnostics that you could do. Sounds like the signal into your router is on the low side of working/not working. Based on the power outage, sounds like something between your router and Verizon network is not supplying a high enough signal to your router causing it to go up/down. Another issue could be a gound related problem which could cause the same issue, making and breaking connection. In my case Xfinity had to install a coax signal amplifer to boost the signal 10-15 db and then my router stopped with the connect/disconnect issue. Edit: I forgot to mention your power connect for your router. It's possible that either the power cord connect to your power outlet/strip is bad or going bad. Try switching the routers power connection to a different outlet (if you haven't done that already).

DSL, right?

Verizon FIOS. They were supposed to show up this morning to 'fix it'. Around 12:30pm I got a call from 'them' saying they can't make it today, they'll be here tomorrow morning. We've been 'out' since last Tuesday.

Anyway the guy I was talking to asked me some questions about my problem and he said it sound like a 'line' problem and will be sending out a 'splicing' crew instead of a standard in home tech.

We shall see.
