Paris has long been my favourite, but Madrid comes a close second, Lisbon is lovely & quite compact, and even Valetta & Palma had plenty of places of interest and history. Valetta, Lisbon & Palma do of course have water nearby too!
We didn't care for Austria in general, but Vienna was nice to look around for a day or two, also Salzburg. Didn't like Tunis/Tunisia at all - some unpleasant undercurrents (not the water kind either). Cyprus was quite nice if the shops had all been open for cafes etc., but in both Tunis and Cyprus, I was working for most of the time.
Husband was working when we went to Madrid, but seeing we'd been on holiday at home when he was needed, they sent us both BA first class, booked us into a 5* apartment hotel 10 minutes walk from the city centre, and let us stay all week. It's a lovely city with a superb art gallery, wonderful street market and sprawling park, plus lots of history around. Very hot though as it was August! 42-44C and dropped to around 29 by 11pm. They like to remind you how hot you are ...digital thermometers on the buildings everywhere you look. No doubt to remind people to stay in the shade and drink plenty.
Out of all those, Tunisia is one place I would not go to, in fact any Islamic country would be a no go for me, most of them do not take kindly to alcohol or vaping, and they have laws that belong in the middle ages.
I'm also off to bed now...
