Just what i was thinking George  I do like the tower one on AFM but it doesn`t say how long it is !

For keeping your drip tip cool I would have thought you'd want POM (e.g. delrin) or PTFE (e.g. teflon) or some other plasticy type thing. I've got a few with either POM bases or POM tops and they work better than metal or glass I think (although glass is better than metal).

Or go all out and get this:

Heat Dissipation Drip tip set

.... although maybe not at that price.

Dunno Bob, he`s changed shifts quite a bit, but never gone AWOL for so long. Could be his PC what`s messed up though :)

Well I know he was having problems with his Broadband, that's the nice thing about Fibre, since mine was installed over 2 years ago, I have only had one 2 hour drop out and that was due to a major fault that affected lots of PlusNet subscribers

Snap! plus couldn't resist the Tundra

Getting a bit concerned over ian Bob, He`s never been away for 5 days before now !
Yes, it's unusual. Could be anything: tired, computer/connection issues, even 'flu. Hopefully, he'll reappear soon!

Mine has been rock solid since I moved from TalkTalk (who had taken over my previous ISP) had a new NTSE master socket fitted and positioned in this room 3.5 years ago, but the past few weeks have seen random drops of ADSL - still connected, just loses the signal briefly, and re-synchs at the same up/down speeds, SNR etc. It seems to happen at all sorts of odd times, so nothing on a timer causing interference, sometimes through the night, other times while I'm actually using it, so not at all sure what it is.
Router and filter were both renewed a year ago (no guarantee I know) but nothing has changed, no new electrical items. I do get slow loading pages sometimes though, so thinking perhaps a DNS issue, but don't know enough about it.
Looking at Speedtest, I have a feeling I may have been moved onto a slightly different pop.
I hate when something works perfectly for a long time and then suddenly misbehaves!

I bought my own router when I moved over to Fibre (VDSL) because BT supplied their own Modem and separate Router and i wanted an all-in-one kit, it's a German model and very good, can control the phone line as well, so I can block calls etc., I also have my own IP address, so it never changes and use OpenDNS for all the DNS queries (helps block unwanted sites as well) and on top of that the speeds are fantastic 76.30 Mbits/sec Down and the full 20 Mbits/sec Up - web pages load almost instantaneously, depending on their servers of course. I would advise anyone who can get it, to go ahead, especially if they spend a lot of time on-line, best if you are within 300 meters of your cabinet though.

I used my own new router too: Billion because it hangs on to a weaker/long line far better than most (we're quite a distance from the exchange). I had a terrible connection, but when I moved to Zen in 2011, they questioned the line issues and suggested an engineer to check the internal wiring ..they were right. Turned out that when we moved in here in '93, the idiot from BT told us that the socket upstairs was the main socket, so everything had to be routed from that.
In reality, the plate where the phone line comes in was unused on the other side of the garage so he installed new cabling around the outside of the house and in through the wall here, and immediately I got a very sound connection with everything as fast as I needed. Zen arranged that and it was a lot cheaper than if I'd booked it direct with BT.
I don't have any requirement for fibre even though I'm only around 60mts. from the cabinet. Would cost me a fair bit more each month too.

Have heard good things about the Billion, and you are right about dodgy BT engineers, had same sort of problem years ago when I had ADSL2 from Sky, used to get full 12 Mbit/s then one day it went down to 8 Mbits/s, BT kept saying nothing wrong with the line, neighbours were also having problems, so we ended up hacking the wire to bits outside and reporting it as a telephone fault. BT came replaced the cabling and bang - back up to 12 Mbits/s, and as it was outside the property, we didn't have to pay a penny.
