You only have to look at the paperwork that comes with medication - there are always side effects of some sort, god knows why ?????
Nothing comes without a price it seems!
I don't seem to tolerate pharmaceutical medication well. Until I was ill last year, I'd only had the usual antibiotics on occasion, and a 10 month course of tablets in 1999/2000 to correct a thyroid problem (no side effects either).
In hospital though, one of the strong IV antibiotics made me very sick, then the steroids gave me pretty awful side effects that took 3 months to diminish after a 9 week course, and then the tablets I'm on now are causing side effects including purple splotches on my arms and dreadful headaches.
The things that bothers me is the detailed info on this drug for ulcerative colitis at Medicines.org.uk.
Side effects can be many, and amongst those they class as rare, I have some!
One part though, does worry me:
4. Possible side-effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Organ specific side effects affecting the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, skin and subcutaneous tissue have been reported.
Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical advice immediately
If you develop unexplained bruising (without injury), bleeding under your skin, purple spots or patches under your skin, anaemia (feeling tired, weak and looking pale, especially on lips, nails and inside of eyelids), fever (high temperature), sore throat or unusual bleeding (e.g. nose bleeds).
I've mentioned this and shown it, to the consultant twice, and he doesn't seem too concerned - I think, from what he says, that it's not as important as getting this condition into remission. It seems that this is his drug of choice, and that he has much faith in it.
I've also had the tiredness, weakness, numb fingers and extremity's mentioned elsewhere in the side effects, and the temperature and sore
throat when I've had the shivery fever flare up recently! - but he seems unperturbed for the reasons mentioned. My own GP had the same response.
Both of them do agree though that Biologics would not only help the immune system related psoriasis outbreak, but also the colitis - all part of the same group of auto-immune ailments!
That though, is down to the dermatologist, so I need to get in touch with him again. Not sure whether I want to risk another drug causing side effects ..plus, it's self administered injections
I'm fed up of this medication lark!
