Having had a few occasions where MS updates have screwed something up on my computer, I don't usually do any now, and opted to manage updates myself rather than auto downloads. W7Pro and IE11.
I use Kaspersky, SuperAntiSpyWare each evening, and also have MWB.

But, in light of this cyber attack and hearing it could spread from infected computers now, do you know what the patch number was that MS issued in March to prevent it?

This was released in March, but has been updated in both the April & May updates:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - March 2017 (KB890830)

But that will not help against Ransomeware, a good AV program and BackUp system is the only way to deal with it, I had one try to infect my computer about 5 months ago, I did exactly what they say not to do and immediately shut the system down, then started it in safe mode, selecting the restore system option and selecting one from before the infection, and that worked fine, because my AV had trapped the RW before it could damage any files.

Thanks Bob. This sort of thing worries me ...perhaps too much.
I had a few annoying episodes with Windows update in the past, and see there's still the odd poor one that needs a fix after it screws peoples computers up, so I still avoid them.

I back up using Macrium every week and keep the drive in a drawer, so that's safe. I wouldn't know how to use the back up, but at least I have it! ;)
I have Kaspersky IS always running, and the MWB that I use often ...plus the SAS one every night before shut-down.

Only today when looking for info on a simple item, I had a pop-up ask me as a Zen customer, would I like a gift token, and to click on the box. I had to close the explorer window via Task manager to make it go away!

I thought it was a patch, not a removal tool. So, should I look in my assortment of updates for KB890830 and download it?

Yes you definitely need to patch because Windows mail helpfully (not) opens mail for you unlike Outlook which makes you click on attachments and there is a flaw in email.

Trying the Hodges Strawberry Custard with a SOCC coil but it does not seem very strong but need more time to make my mind up. Just brushed teeth so still tasting mint. :D

I left the old coil in but was still tasting Black Magic so swapped to a new coil. One thing I don't like is the eye dropper which I can forsee having problems when the bottle level is low as it isn't long enough. :(

But its a lovely glass bottle with the bottlers signature on it. :D

I do use Outlook - just got the Hotmail sorted again in there last week as I hated using it online, so once more, all three of my email accounts are in Outlook.
I don't click on any attachments.

Well, there's one thing for a start that will alter the flavour a bit ;)

Black Magic is a stronger flavour I think, so that may have some bearing on it. Have a cup of tea and try it again. I often get a better flavour after a decent drink of tea! Failing that, see how it is tomorrow :)

Well then - what's not to like! ..seriously though, when the bottles is getting low, tip it sideways and get as much as you can that way, then, once you can get no more that way, tip it up carefully and pour it directly into the tank ...just take care not to pour it down the chimney! :)

4012212 is the KB number for that system for security only updates there is another for the full rollup of updates.
Is that the one for the patch for preventing this recent cyber attack bug? ...if so, how will I find it ...will that number be listed amongst the ones I haven't downloaded?
(I don't often look in the updates because it once automatically started downloading/installing some).

Not wanting to be awkward, but I can do that in windows update (when it behaves itself) :)
Just wondered if you have a link to that particular patch I wanted?

No need to do it now though Tim, I need to start tidying up and get some sleep (had a long day) - I'll come back to this in the morning. Thanks for the help so far - and to Bob too. :)

Have you created a restore CD or DVD using Macrium, because that's what you need to use to Boot the computer, if you ever want to restore your system from the Backups.

No, because that one gets updated every month, I just let MS download updates etc and then ask me if I want to install them, which I normally do.

MS dont do downloadable patches anymore they are all through windows update.

Although you can use Windows Update Catalog make sure you get the right one but it includes all the security updates for that month.

Microsoft Update Catalog
I'll venture to look at what's sat there in the updates first - if I can identify it, I'll download it. Usually if I have the KB number, I can find them in my updates. From what you say, I won't be able to do that though.

Well, the Hodges is starting to grow on me, it's not as strawberry as I was expecting being used the JC strawberry bliss but is more custardy taste with a slight hint of strawberry.
Glad to hear that - strawberry & cream or custard ones vary a lot - some have more of one than the other.
If you have a decent quantity of anything, there's nothing stopping you from topping the flavour up with some flavouring, as some brands only need a small amount.

Way back I did - when I upgraded the Macrium

As I said, I'll take a look through the uninstalled list and see if I can identify it ...it'll be amongst the March ones, and I think they eliminate old ones when there's a newer one, so hopefully I'll find it without MS doing things by itself!

OK - found that and read about it ...then tried to get it from the update catalogue.
No matter how many times I try to do the requested action in IE (it was already enabled anyway), I keep getting this:

Found this
Download updates from Microsoft's Update Catalog without IE - gHacks Tech News
- currently downloading the update 4012212

Using the RSS feed it allows the number of the KB update to be added to the url and then I could just choose the 64 bit version and download it.
Haven't restarted the computer yet. Fingers crossed
