Try washing your hands better and dry burn your coil prior to wick installation. You might want to use vinyl exam gloves when you wick your atomizer, as rayon wicks very very well and tends to strip oils off of your fingers, which is likely the source of your off flavors.
How long did you you vape on the atomizers you wicked using rayon? In my experience, the off flavor goes away after 2-3ml of juice (at most).
It sounds like the issue you had with your Theorem was you didn't use enough wick. Rayon is very resistant to burning provided there is enough of it to maintain its density after a few firing cycles. If there isn't enough rayon in your coil it will collapse and slowly start to singe away.

Use more than you would think is possible and keep your wick free of contaminants, you will have better results with rayon.

This is really useful info. I had no idea that Rayon stripped the oils from your skin. I'll make sure I wash my hand really well from now on.
I personally have never used anything but Rayon and am perfectly happy with it but it can't hurt to be cautious.

I used KGD cotton for 6-7 months and was happy enuf with it but getting the same amount of wick every time is the key to avoided leaks in my tiny Protank Kanger coils. Getting it right every time was nearly impossible. Then I found an old dead thread about using cotton cheesecloth. Separate the threads count the number of threads you want to bundle together, tie another thread around the middle of the bundle. Use that thread to feed thru the coil pulling the wick doubled over behind the feeder thread. I get exactly the same amount of wick every time. Wicks as well as KGD for me. This works well for my tiny 2mm I.D. coils but I doubt it would be practical anything much larger.

I'm curious. What do you use to wick your RTA's and drippers and why do you prefer it?

I've only been rebuilding for a month or so and have stuck to rayon following some suggestions on here from users I trust to know what they are talking about, but as with a lot of vape related things, I'm sure preferred wicking material is subjective.

It will be interesting to hear what people think.

plain ole cotton balls.
because its easily available.

What's strange is I did all of that. I followed those tips to a T and it still tasted nasty. I even wore gloves on the 6th attempt and it was still gross. I think I'll just stick with cotton, I never have had issues with it and there is never a weird taste with native wicks and cotton bacon.

Tried KGD, cotton bacon, vapers choice, fiber freaks and few others. Found cotton bacon v2 does the job very well. Fiber freaks is expensive for what you get but I have noticed something very noticeable. Say I wick on a Monday afternoon. On Tuesday morning, cotton bacon v2 will always taste a bit drier, I can tell it's not a fresh wick but works fine. On the fiber freaks, it's keeps on kicking right from the start. Effectively, the second day performance of the fiber freaks is noticeably better. I tried rayon/cellulose but kept getting the nasty chemical tinge not matter what. Vapers choice is nice but expensive and needs a lot of priming before it settles down. Tried some wick materials that tastes disgusting. Never tried silica wicks. Prefer to stick to cotton for now.
