Well I recently started back vaping so far 2 weeks no smokes. I was really end to end to vaping and mods and got in a wreck lost all my stuff so went back to smoking. Well in the progress of starting back I went into a local vape shop and found myself lost and felt like I went 40 years into the future. I asked one of the guys were his mods were and and he brought me to this shelf of box shapped doohickeys that were shinny and confusing with computers in them ( my previous mod was a mankos slit 18650 mech with a mutation x v1 and the only box mod I knew of was Hana DNA 30 so you can see why I was lost). After he showed me these mods without explaing how any of them worked unless I bought one, I asked were are the real mods? And he gave me this look like I was wearing a pink dress inside a bar inside Afghanistan and said " what do you mean real mods? These are the real deal!" I came back asking the mechanical ones you know , a positive and negative blow up and your hand shinny metal tubes. After I said that he pointed me to this dusty corner with no lights and has 2 mods to choose from.

So the point of saying this is so I do not look like a idoit when I ask what I am about to.

One - what has happened to walking into the Vapor lounge and seeing 50 different types of mechanical mods and why do people frown at people who still use them?

2 what are the benefits of having a computer in a mod like wtf? Do we need more confusing things in this world then a computer that tells me when and how I can vape?

3 weres the big amounts of mechanical mods being sold at now? I expected new ones not the same ones I looked at when I quit ?

4 and if I did decided to get a 200 watt box mod what would be the difference between it and the box mod I have now that holds 3 batteries with no computer?

Thanks in advance

Probably the biggest issue with mechanicals these days is a perceived liability one. Back when you vaped last, there weren't many, if any, sub ohm coils out there. At least not "off the shelf". What happens these days is that people who have NO idea what so ever they are doing and have NO understanding of ohms, watts and voltage and just want to impress all the girls with huge honkin' clouds ... will slap a shiny new sub ohm tank on a mechanical mod whose battery output current can't handle the coil requirements and things (might) go BOOM !!! ... so regulated mods with "computers" and firmware with safety features built in is the way to go these days. In spite of how it now may seem, they've actually dumbed down the whole process and made it pretty much plug 'n play.

Welcome to the future! Lol! The biggest advantage of a regulated mod over a mech is it takes out some of the danger. Also, you can get a lot more power out of your batteries. A good cloud build when you were last vaping was dual 22G Kanthal coils in an dripper. It sucked your batteries dry in 10 puffs and there was the off chance that it would blow your face off. Now, you can do some crazy stuff like this:
velocity 1.jpg

14 wrap dual coils, 1/4" ID, 24G Nichrome 80 and still .6 ohms. A mech would take about 2 hours to heat that up, but that 3 battery box you were talking about throws 7 volts at it and heats it up instantly. And the last puff before your batteries go dead is the same as the first puff. No more tapering performance as you drain the batts. I still use and love my mechs, but for a cloud chasing build, a mech can't keep up with the new high wattage regulated mods.

Thats the free market at work. Stores stock what sells.

Most stores don't sell mechs cause they don't sell. If a market for them appears scores of "Mechs*R*Us" will appear on ever street corner. Mechs are still sold online but they seem to be on clearance everywhere.

Its not actually a computer. More like a watch. None of mine tell me when and how I can vape so I'm not sure which ones you seen. Do you have a link??

I recall the time myself I got my first "computer" mod. I was fine with mechs. Now honestly I can't remember the last time I trotted a mech out even though I have a dozen.

1. Some people frown for saftey reasons. Nothing wrong with a good ole mech.
2. A chip in a mod regulates the vape and is much safer. The mod will not fire in a dead short situation. The chip massively prolongs battery life especially in a parallel configuaration.
3. Hard to innate a metal tube. The switches have gotten a little better though. Magnets.
4. The difference is the chip. Evolv is the company that leads the edge, mostly. Read up on temperature Control vaping as well. You may lke it.

Most of us mech users shop online.
B&Ms were always overpriced with a horrible selection.
They are mostly geared to rip money from uninformed new vapers.

Trends also move so fast in this industry that if a shop orders 20 of the latest hot mechanical, It will be old news before they even receive the stock.
Online you can see sites blowing out old stock mechanicals for crazy low prices.

Clones are also a thousand times better quality today than they were a few years ago.
Many today's are built better than the authentics, on better production equipment.

Times have changed.

To awnser your question. It started with the success of devices like the mvp, people realised a box form factor can hold more battery capacity and be smaller compared to tube based mods. Having a chip in the board actually gives you more freedom in wire and build choice. Imo mechanical mods actually tell you how to vape because your limited to 3.7-4.2v were modern regulated devices can go from 3.5-6+ volts. The reason this becomes a factor is wire mass. Claptons are all the rage right now and a mechanical device just can't put enough power to these coils without severely effecting ramp up time (the time it takes the coil to heat up hot enough to vape). The other major factor is temp control. Using temp control can be frustrating at first but when working you will never get a dry hit again. Right now the most popular device is the rx200 it uses a great joytech chip that supports temp control and 100w(don't quote me on the watts) and holds 3 18650s in a really ergonomic desgin. Can be had for under 100 from most vendors. If you really wanna stick with mechanicals you can either find a nice custom box mod online either parallel(4.2v) or series (8.4v). Or go with the tried and true reo. Any questions just ask. I know it can be overwhelming.

Thanks for your replies I enjoy them all.
But I ordered the twisted tripple and in my opinion it's semi mechanical because of the 5 clicks <-- back from the ego days lol-
But yeah I've seen them crazy discounts and the magnets are a big plus. But I enjoyed Vaping alot more when I was building coils and killing batteries. And sub ohm tanks seem actually kind of cool.
So dose anyone have a link to learn more about these crazy mods and how to use them because I looked up some of them and saw the the tanks at .2 were good to use at 55-75 watts and some of the new mods are 200+ so what's the point of buying one? Of you can only find a tank that goes down to .2 and if the batteries are ran in parallel how are you supposed to go below that?
