Here are a couple ideas I've been thinking about. Disclaimer: These images are not to scale.

Both of these mods revolve around the insertion of a one way valve into the cart and a method of dispensing the juice from within. Neither mod uses any type of filler solving a few problems like wicking, total juice usage, etc. A few other obstacles arise, however, mainly the mechanical function to operate one and modifying an atomizer on the other.

The one on the left is the cart only mod which inserts a plug with a spring loaded one way valve operated when the post comes in contact with the bridge. This would happen when you clicked down on the cartridge, like a pen, with return so that you can control the flow. Basically a drip-cart. I'm not sure how to go about the mechanism to achieve the button like actuation. Suggestions welcome.

On the right we have a similar plug and one way valve. This time a post on the atty (also covered with the mesh material) lifts the stopper and utilizing the mesh itself to wick from the reservoir on its own. Very straight forward...except the part about modding the bridge on the atty. Again, suggestions welcome.

Anyway, I hadn't seen anyone discuss filler-less carts so I thought it was worth exploring. I'd love to see an easy to achieve solution for a cart that doesn't need filler. More juice, less waste.

Discuss!

With either version you have above I think a spring going from the atty to the plug would work to get the "pen click" effect.

Something to consider, alternatively you could bypass everything and create a switch that does all for you. On the side of the cart next to where the valve is a switch (manual motion type NOT electronic) could be in place on the exterior such that when depressed or turned could open the valve temporarily.

I like your ideas.

No filler would be great.
And a one way valve is a good idea also.

I have made a few fillerless mods. The first one was just a plugged up juice compartment with a small hole for the juice to get in and out.

The way it worked and also the problem with it was it took a good whack to get anything out of it. With no vent hole (or pressure behind it) the liquid just stays in. That may be a problem with what you are showing also Dubnluvn. But it looks like you are on the right track. No filler is great.

Great idea!

I think the major hurdle with metered or clickable cart mods is the inconsistency in liquid thickness/viscosity.

Cold temperatures, adding glycerin and/or varying temperatures in different atty's and vaping habits will probably lead to unrepeatable results from user to user.

But if you can make it work... you've got my money!

If you're just trying to see if you can make it work for your own personal use then you're way ahead of the game.

Good luck and keep us updated, please!
