This is going to be my first attempt at DYI juice ... Maybe some of you could see if what I have planned looks ok to you.

I want something as close to a cigar smell and flavor as possible. Mild and a little sweet [without] any added flavors such as cherry, etc ... Basically just a heavy and sweet cigar taste and smell.

I would like the finished product to be a 50% PG / 50% VG at 18mg Nic.

I am going to buy everything from RTS Vapes ... The unflavored 100% PG, 36mg Nic. Also the USP vegetable glycerin and the flavorings.

To make 50ml of my 50/50, 18mg 'Cigar' juice, here is my plan:

25 ml......Unflavored 100% PG - 36mg Nic
20 ml......USP Vegetable Glycerine
..5 ml......Hangsen VG based Flavoring (10% of the total liquid amount)

For the flavorings, I plan on using an equal amount of Hangsen 'Elder Captain' and Hangsen 'Cigar' flavors.

And to finish it, I plan on adding about 8 drops (0.8%) of MTS Vape Wizard.
________________________________________

My question for you is: Is there any non-NET cigar flavorings that you might recommend other than the two I show above? The 'Elder Captain' smells a lot like Captain Black pipe tobacco, and the 'Cigar' obviously has a pretty good cigar smell and flavor (from what I have witnessed from buying it as a ready-made Hangsen juice).

Again, if you know of any nice rich cigar type flavors that you would recommend, please tell me.

Also ... would you say that using this Hangsen flavoring equaling 10% of the total liquid is about the right amount in order to get a rich cigar flavor?

Thanks ... Ron

That looks like a good plan but be sure and test in small (3 to 5 ml) batches first. Also the TFA brown sugar double is a decent sweetener for tobacco type flavors (imo, of course).

I'm liking some of the tobacco flavors from the Vaping Zone alcohol line. The plain cigar at 2.5% is very good and for me seems to be what you describe, but some reviews claim a chocolate note, so be a little weary on that one.

I'd also suggest poking around in the Inawera thread a little and maybe even post your question there. I plan on trying some of the Inawera flavors in the near future.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

Edit to add: I haven't tried any of the Hangsen cigar flavors, but for the tobacco flavors that I tried, 10% would be way to much. My experience was that the Hangsen flavors could be quite tricky to mix. I'd suggest starting at 2% and work up from there.

10% total flavoring may be a little to much to start with for hangsen tobaccos. I would start at 5% total flavoring and work up. I ususally use a total of 7% and I like my tobacco taste on the strong side. The sweetener is a good idea but I would use EM at .5% (point 5 percent not 5%) as it will bring out the natural sweetness of the tobacco and not add an artifical sweetness. it will also give the mix a thicker richer taste. I would also hold off on the vape wizard until after it has steeped. I find hangsen really doesn't need it. If after it steeps one tobacco tastes stronger then the other then use wizard at 1%. This mix will need a good 2 - 3 week steep for the taste to fully develope. Over all your on the right path good luck.

EM is Ethyl Maltos - it's also called 'Cotton Candy'...it's an additive that adds 'thickness' and 'smooths off rough edges' at the expense of lessening overal flavor intensity.

Especially for newbies, it's very important to not use additives that affect the flavor & intensity of the flavors (and with Vape Wizard, actually change how your taste receptors work)...until afteryou know what the flavors actually taste like.

DIYing is like any sport - until you can throw the ball straight and hit your target, don't start messing with all the variations...or you'll likely never master throwing it stright or with variations.

Edit: 'Agree with dannyv45 - .5% is all you'd need on the EM.

Is this the EM I would need to buy if wanting to use a sweetener >
10 ml Cotton Candy Flavor (TFA)

And this brand of EM would also be used at about 0.5% of the total base ingredients?

No, if you want a sweetener, get sweetener. EM is not a sweetener. It does many things and can sweeten, but it's a piss-poor sweetener. That is perfect if you want EM solution though.

Usually % means % of total. If it means anything different, it should be noted as such. Since that mention was not noted as meaning something different than % of total, it's safe to assume that is what it means.

Thanks everyone for your input

I have to start somewhere ... maybe this would be a better recipe for 'cigar' juice just as a starter (just to initially get me somewhere on the right track).

Cigar Recipe...55% PG / 45% VG - 18mg Nic

25 ml..............Unflavored 100% PG - 36mg Nic
20 ml..............Vegetable Glycerin
..3 ml..............Flavoring....Hangsen 'Cigar'
..2 ml..............Flavoring....Inawera 'Absolute Cuban Cigar'..(40 Drops)
..6 Drops...."....Flavoring....TFA 'Cotton Candy' (EM)............(0.5%)

50 ml.............Total Finished Product

What do you think?

Wethinks what everyone has mentioned - that the time for using additives is after you know your ingredients & recipe. It's just plain silly to add "xyz" additive (salt, pepper, herbs, spices) to your food until after you taste it and decide that you need it.

What Hoosier said is gold - he's got more mileage than the rest of us put together.

I'm a big proponent of EM, but even I wouldn't use it with a flavoring and mix that I was completely unfamiliar with.

Even then I'd start at 0.1% EM solution and work up slowly from there. It can do some neat stuff in tiny amounts, but becomes a force to recin' with if it gets too high.

But hey, the Y in DIY is "yourself", so do your mixing however yourself wants to do it!

Again ... thanks :)

I will take it sloooowly. No additives until I figure out what I think I really need in it ... then just small batches with small adjustments till I get something that is nice.

I am still looking for that elusive Cigar juice that smells and tastes like a good quality mild / semi-sweet cigar. Don't really need a 'cigarette' taste, or anything that comes from an ashtray after an all-night party ... just looking for that smell and taste of a nice cigar.

BTW ... I tried my hand at making a NET cigar essence from a couple of fairly expensive (Gurkha) cigars ... waste of time, and a waste of 2 nice cigars.

I wish I could find some reasonably priced 'cigar' flavoring that would fit that bill.

Ron,

Oh, and BTW ... I have tried a bunch of different RY4 ready-made juices, but to me, most of it reminds me of a plate of pancakes smothered in maple syrup at IHOP! :)

In fact, I had some women in a bar awhile ago make the statement when I was vaping RY4 .... "It smells like breakfast in here" :)

It was mentioned earlier and is the best advice that could be given. START with small test batches 5 - 10ml so your not wasting supplies. I use 5 - 8ml test batches in 10 ml bottles which give me room for adjustments.

Go easy on percentages. The percentages and recommendations for EM are based on my own experience having mixed hangsen tobaccos for quite a while. BUT your taste may not be the same as mine so experiment with small test batches.

You've herd from the experts and the advice is all right on the money...... Good luck and please ask questions and post your results. We are always happy to help.

I love the Cohiba flavoring in the Chinese Flavorings at RTS. I had tried a Cohiba at a local B&M & googled. I like it at 5 to 7%. I swear I can taste the wrapper when I vape it in the morning. It is good as the only flavoring. I don't add any sweetner. At 5% it may be a little lite on flavor at first but after it has steeped a week it's pretty full flavored. At 7 % it's pretty good right out of the gates. Sounds just like what you may be searching for. I like the Hangsen flavoings as well. Just haven't had a chance to try them all yet. Happy DIYing!:)
