Just made my first purchase. Anxious for the shipment to arrive. I was gonna go with V4L 808 XL's and made a last minute change to the Joye 510. When I first started looking in to e cigs I was drawn to the 2 piece design and longer battery life of the 808's, but after further research I decided that the 510 would suit me just as well as long as I had a PCC. So anyways, I go to buy my 808s this morning and go to take a few last minute glances at some 510s. The smoke safe was having a sale and I got a regular 2 batt starter kit, a pcc, a pass thru, and an extra set of blank cartomizers all for $65 and some change after the 5% coupon code. Free shipping because I hit the $65 mark! Based on the research I've been doing I got this thing for a steal compared to the prices I've seen on other reputable products. So, if anyone who actually knows what they're talking about, since I don't, wants to recommend this to any other newbies debating what to purchase while the sale is going on I'm sure they would appreciate it. I was wondering about juices though. Does the PG/VG ratio really matter other than personal taste preference? What's the benefit/difference of LR or HR atomizers?

PG/VG is mostly a preference thing, but PG is usually easy to fill cartos with, as it's very thin. I personally prefer VG, because it's more comfortable on my throat, but some VG juices I have to cut with water in order to use them in cartos. You'll pretty much find out all of this by experimenting, and find which juices you prefer.

LR atomizers use more battery power, as they are a lower resistance. They usually produce more vapor, and may or may not produce more flavor, mostly based on the juice. Some juices are muted by too much power, some seem to like it. HR are usually for high voltage mods. The middle ground is SR (standard resistance), which is basically what most smaller kits are intended to use. A sort of happy middle ground. You should primarily stick with SR for a standard 510 battery (they usually aren't even called SR, they just might have no mention of the resistance instead).

Congrats on your PV purchase, and welcome to ECF! Don't worry about not knowing all the ins and outs... I certainly don't. That said, noobs are welcomed here, and there's a ton of information to digest. Sometimes, too much information!

I started about a month and a half ago. My first post was "what do I buy?". The recommendations were plenty, and after my first experience with an 808-type device (first generation e-ciggies) two years ago, I knew what I didn't want. The ECF members were extremely helpful, and pointed me to the eGo, 510's, mods. I went to a local brick-and-mortar and got hooked up with an eGo-T. The difference from two years back was night and day.

Since, I've evolved a bit. Anxious to know about the cartos, juice and accessories, I went on a bit of a buying binge. I've got the eGo batteries lined up, but have moved away from the cone and tank to 510 cartos and the eGo Mega Dual Coil cartos.

So, to answer some of your questions:

1. I would recommend either the eGo, eGo-T, or 510 as good starter models. The batteries will stay charged about a day, and the vapor and throat hit are pretty good. Much better than the e-ciggy starter models, or single-use models. Of course, I haven't played with the 808 types, and there are ECF folks that swear by them, so I wouldn't say that you're making a mistake if you went with the Smoke Safe sale.

2. Juices - your mileage may vary. What is my all-day vape could be your dirty ashtray taste. Vendors are plentiful, with as many flavors as you could think of. Some prefer tobacco flavors, while others prefer fruit or food. I found that many of the vendors will have sales of their sample (or smaller packs) of juices. It's easy to try a variety of flavors to see what works best for you. The best part is that you don't have to commit to a large amount of an unknown juice.

Some juices you'll like... other's you'll put away. ECF has a "pay it forward" section, where you can offer your juices to someone else for free. Likewise, you can receive other's offers, which can give you the opportunity to try different flavors without socking your wallet.

The PG/VG ratio is a matter of personal preference, although in some cases, it can be varied, due to the vaper's sensitivity to either. Some will quote ratios (80/20, 75/25) to balance the vapor quantity with the throat hit. VG usually relates to vapor, while PG relates to throat hit. I've used from 65/35, to 80/20, and cannot tell the difference... but again, I'm new to this.

3. Atomizers, or more specifically, cartomizers (cartridge and atomizer in one) come in a plethora of ranges. My eGo battery has threads for the tank-style cartos (using the outer threads) and some for the 510 cartos (inside threads). Both work equally well.

This is where my noobness comes in. The cartos that I know of are regular resistance, low resistance, and dual coil. If you go to gotvapes.com (one of the ECF suppliers), you'll see tons of cartos - CE2, dripomizers, turbine systems. I have no idea what these all are... although I'm sure I'll get around to experimenting some day.

Regular resistance cartos will generate moderate vapor and throat hit. The vapor temperature is normal (not hot or cold).
Low resistance cartos will generate a hotter vapor, and tend to enhance the throat hit. These use batteries a little quicker.
The dual coil cartos have two heating coils in the assembly, and typically generate more vapor. The eGo Mega Dual Coil carto I use is also LR, which runs through the juice and battery a little quicker. However, I tend to keep four batteries fully charged, should I go on a chain-vape. I've never used more than two, but in the world of vaping, it's always good to have backups.

So, as a fellow noob, may I suggest that you look at this as the start of a journey... to find the right device, juice, and cartos that hit the spot. I'm still looking for mine, but have settled on a few good juices, carto types, and batteries. If you find something that you like, order more for backup. The first month for me was a frenzy to get my hands on everything. After you find something that you like, you will likely scale down a bit, and enjoy the vape.

Again, welcome to ECF. I'm sure that other members will chime in on the various parts and goodies you can buy for your PV.

Good luck on your journey!

A slim ecig like 510 can only use standard resistance. LR suck more power and run hotter and can only be used on ecigs with 450mah of charge or more (because they have beefier electronics to handle the increased power needs). HV/HR are less hot and are made for high voltage ecigs where the voltage will make them hot.

PG is thin, lets through the most flavor, and the most of nicotine's TH and irritation, and has thin visible vapor
VG is thick, dulls/smooths everything PG lets through, makes thicker more persistent vapor

Most US people use blends since we have so many juice vendors and most real juice makers offer at leats one blend, sometimes all ratios

atomizer - use whatever ratio you want as long as it wicks faster than you vape it

stuffing cartomizers - I find thin juices work best, 20% or less VG

reservoir cartomizers and tanks - 20-30% VG works well, a bit more VG might be ok if the vendor thins their juices, 100% PG may leak easier
