My husband is an engineer. He did not offer to help, but I recruited him. He did stuff like steal my frankencoils and rewrap them into machine-like perfection on his first try, while insulting my skills in a casual manner, LOL, and then past a certain point, refused to allow me to "help." To be fair, I suppose it was a lot easier for *him,* and I did recruit him, but I think he was more pleased with "my" build than *I* was.

When I built my Hussar I waited until he was out of the house, and used my frankencoils and cotton pads to my heart's content, it was ugly, but it worked.... I feel the vape was nicer, but hey I enjoy making things work, too, so maybe my emotions rule that statement :) I have no mechanical skills and prior to vaping, used my math for very little at all....

My husband's version of helping was "can't you just buy those things? Why do you want to do this when all you have to do is buy them!?"

Hahaha.. I'm all, "the government is going to take away our vape stuff and I have to know how to do this! We might not be able to buy them someday soon and I need to figure it out before that day comes!"

He's all.. "okay then, but we can just buy them..."

Lol... like I said, no help! Hahaha.. he never is though whenever I have a mind to do something myself. He spends more time laughing at me for jury rigging everything all the time. When the dryer broke I hung clothes from the ceiling fans all over the house and he came home and about went into hysterics laughing at me for it..(Yes, the ceiling fans were on.. same concept as a dryer I think!).. apparently, I was just supposed to wait until he could buy me a new dryer too like normal women.. Hahaha..

My thinking has always been, where there is a will there is a way, and that way I will find and no one can stop me.. Hahaha

Man, when I got here, I tried to wash my clothes in the bathtub and hang them on our balcony railing (a very tragic banking event occurred when my online banking was down, resulting in a cascade of overdraft fees, which I only discovered when trying to get a roll of quarters for the laundry-room we stayed in an apartment for a bit) the Husband didn't laugh, he told me "Bylaws prevent that," and I was all, "Argh, how do you even KNOW these things!!!!" and made me beg for quarters (he did laugh, at that point). I could use a less interactive husband from time to time when I come up with "good" ideas, LOL.

I made the bank fix it the next day (after some arguing, but I even WENT to an ATM to check and it was *fine* then), but the Husband will only allow me to MacGyver within the law.... To be fair, I probably *need* that assistance, from time to time.... Sometimes my "great" ideas are not so "great."

But I do have a clothesline in my backyard now, I find it soothing.... :) It's faster than the dryer and cheaper, too, where I live basically sucks all moisture from anything at all....

Sorry but reading this i just can't stop laughing :lol::lol:

I'm a single man, and an absolute tech geek so i too like to tinker around with stuff (for one i did build my own pc last year) i work in the video industry too (not youtube lol). My biggest reason to switch from factory coils to an rta is simply the fact you won't have a dud and if you burn the cotton you can easily fix it by simply switching it. a roll of wire+cotton lasts much much longer than any factory pack would too.

The ceiling fan is a good one though  wouldn't have thought of it myself ahah !

I hope you have fun with it, Lupinehorror. :) I rather impusively did a first build on a ridiculously complicated, tiny deck, and I learned A LOT. It did require an afternoon of fiddling, the help of the husband and this forum, but the main thing was, my next build I did *all by myself* LOL. It was way, way easier in some ways I was glad I jumped in impulsively with what I had to hand (was waiting for a single deck RTA) as I made every possible mistake (so it seemed) though seems to me you are far more prepared than I was (at least mentally, I had a coil builders kit, so all the necessary tools were to hand, it was just... not really a skillset I had any real handle on). It was fun, however! I hope you enjoy your purchase!

Anna
i did see one of your builds! i may call on your experience.

hey all.
67 days in. really liking my new smok alien (as detailed elsewhere on here). generally i like to tinker with things. this has led me to RTAs (well, that and spending less on coils after the initial setup costs are taken care of!).
so far have looked at clapton wire and cotton bacon along with a winder. the most difficult thing is actually choosing the tank...amazon (uk) have a few that seem like they'd fit the bill. rather looking forward to this.
~~edit~~
the GeekVape Avocado 24 looks decent

I really, really, really like the OBS Engine Nano (a single coil only.) It is pretty foolproof once you get the basics down.

I bought an Avacado 24 that arrived yesterday and it was a comedy of errors from opening the box on. When I took the atomizer apart, the little silicone piece that goes onto the adjustable positive pole that acts as a nut when you screw the base, glass, and deck together fell off. Oh, the fun that ensued! Miraculously, I found it today on the kitchen floor when I was vacuuming. The tiny little screw that goes into the pole is easy to lose too. This thing is definitely more complicated than the Nano. Maybe it is worth it. I will try putting it together, coiling and wicking it tomorrow. The reviews are great but there are cons, IMO. Now that I know, hopefully, it will be less challenging. We shall see. I am attaching this graphic which is much better than the one that comes in the little manual.

PS - you are way ahead of where I was at 67 days in. I used an eGo Twist for a good two years but it worked for me.

thanks for that...will come in useful. i had heard about that wee screw being a bit of a pain. do most of my electronics work on a large tray so if anything decides to try and escape it should be easy to locate...among a pile of resistors and capacitors.
guess i'm a bit obsessed about projects (want to buy any camera gear?!?) but it's all about whatever works. over 4 years? i'd call that a triumph. it'll take me about that long to get to your point but i know i'll get there. cheers for helping me along...and to all who have and all who will.

I am SO tired but decided to go ahead and put the Avacado together and wick and coil it. I did it on my 521 mini tab and when I unscrewed it, the darned base stayed on the tab and juice went everywhere. :( I cleaned it off, juiced it up again and got a no atomizer message on my Tesla Steampunk. *sigh* I knew that had to be a connection problem, so I took it off again and cleaned both the pin on the mod and the pin on the tank. Success! It is a very nice vape. The coil is an SS Fused Clapton, .25 ohms, running the mod at 30 watts. I have the same build on an OBS Engine Nano on a different Steampunk and the flavor is comparable but the clouds with the Avacado are MUCH bigger. I will have to use it for a day or two to decide what I really think but so far, so good. Going to bed now. Have fun!

Lol..

I think everyone gets into rta's for different reasons. For some it's the cost of coils, for others it's because they heard the flavors are better etc., etc. For me it really was deeming and the uncertainty that caused coupled with the fact that our favorite tanks are at the whim of manufacturers who may not find it profitable to manufacture our coils as long as our tanks last.

I have a tendency to find something I like and stuck with it forever, I'm not big on change... heck if it weren't for the fact Windows XP stopped getting updates I swear I'd still be using it! I find what I like and then stick with it til death, the latest and greatest holds little interest for me..

So for me, that was the biggest consideration and why I wanted to get into rta's. I only own darn near every rta ever made in order to find my favorites.. lol. Which is, in a sense, self defeating as to know if it's going to be a favorite you have to master it and once you master a thing.. well...lol... no point getting rid of it, ever. Lol .

But things like cost or burnt cotton were never an issue to me, I wasn't spending enough on coils to feel too upset about throwing the occasional dud away.. but I can definitely understand why some people feel an rta is the best option for cost. Some of these coils don't last as long as lightening on a limb and the cost adds up..

and heck, it IS cheaper by far to build your own coils, and it lends itself to such versatility that building is pretty awesome. With factory coils your very very limited, with an rta, the sky is the limit! Although,I didn't know/realize the latter prior to getting into it! :)

After using the Avacado 24 atty for a day, I have decided it isn't for me. I like the vape but it is kind of a pain to refill and wetting the coil if I let it sit a bit is also a pain. I much prefer my OBS Engine Nano. I only used the Avacado for a day, so I think I will clean it, box it back up, and sell it. It is a good product but not the right product for me. JMHO

How is it vaping for you?
this is really the first time i've used it properly. my first few attempts with some pre-wound coils and the cotton were not entirely successful. fiddly business. didn't give up though and am rather enjoying using it today though it does eat through the juice (cola at the moment). large amount of vapour. air holes half open. nice and cool. combination of the current coils is only 0.2 ohm. the ones i've made will be closer to 0.4 when fitted together.

I won't buy an atty anymore that isn't an RTA. It does take a lot of trial and error with wire and number of wraps to test all of the possibilities. I started vaping to stop smoking never expecting to find a hobby in the process. That said, the Avacado isn't for me. I am going to sell mine. Sometimes you just know. ;)

And the wicking, that is the key.[emoji106]
