So I've recently purchased my very first rda and mech mod, an IGO W on a Pisces clone, and it's working wonderfully so far :D Since I'm new to the whole RDA thing, I was wondering when would be a good time to replace the cotton and the coils? I'm thinking that I'm gonna at least replace the cotton every few days when I want to clean my stuff since I vape quite often, but I don't really know when to replace the coils.

Your coils should last you 2-3 weeks, all you have to do is dry burn them once you remove the wicking material to clean them off. You do this by pulse burning, pulse the fire button. Some coils can last longer, like a month. It all depends on how careful you are removing the wicks. You don't wanna just pull them out to fast and cause the coil to come loose or unwound. If nothing else it'll give you a chance to rebuild a new one :).

I usually change my cotton when I change my flavor unless they pair well. Or I change it when it starts to lose flavor or just tastes funky. As far as the coils go I dry burn with every wick change and I replace them basically whenever I get bored with a certain build. A good coil can last weeks maybe even months with proper care.

Sounds good :) I'm so eager to try building coils and stuff, but I KNOW I'll mess up the first few because I've never done it before  So I'll try to make these ones last as long as possible!

It's actually fun for some of us. Yea, I've traveled the whole "rip trippers tutorials on vaping bliss", but I've settled down to simple micro coils that last a few weeks. :)

Here's a few words of wisdom in advance....

1) Kanthal you snip off can hurt if stepped on by your wife. When that happens, hide your kanthal and say "I don't know what that is"
2) keep a strong magnet to pickup any loose clippings so the above doesn't happen again.
3) LOCK or turn off your mod at all times when coiling.
4) don't try to use the burn marks from #3 above to tell the people at the vape shop what coil you're running, they'll just laugh.
5) Hide your pre-boiled organic cotton from your wife, or it may be used for something else.
6) Have fun with it. :)

I buy my Kanthal from a place called Lightning Vapes. This guy has been reliable to me and everyone I've recommended to him.

... I totally wasn't watching a Rip Tripper video when I read that. Haha but I'm used to cleaning up snipped wires after working; I've been playing guitar for years now and restring my own stuff. As for locking/turning off my mod, I basically take the battery out unless I'm vaping :p And should I always boil my organic cotton?

Just because it's organic, doesn't mean it's free of foul taste. :) I do for taste reasons from time to time, but it's not a high priority type thing for me. Usually un-boiled cotton will have a funky taste for a little bit... and sometimes I have to go on a kanthal hunt... no, not for buying, but for figuring out where it landed after I snipped off that little bit at the end. :) I basically do the builds in the bathroom since there's a sink nearby to rinse the atty parts.

.....play your own guitar eh? don't look at the Clapton Coil build. :) I wonder how many people have tried this with Nylon wire. :)

Just want to make sure i give you the safety speech. Learn Ohms law, use a Volt ohm meter or at least an ohm meter, learn battery safety and use the locking system on your mech. Otherwise you can have a bad day. Exceed the battery specs and you can have a kaboom moment put an atty on the mech with a short and you can mess up a battery. I say this because I made a promise to someone not because I like soap boxes.
This all being said. Replace the cotton when it's gunked up or more likely it burns you can tell from taste and vapor production. I get my best results from dual coils, 2.5mm to 3mm ID coils at least 5 turns. Recommend you use VTC4 or 5 sony batteries. With cotton less is more stuff to much cotton in the coil and it will not work well. High VG seems to work best on RDA's for me. Hope this helped.
