My 901 auto battery was stuck on, and following a forum member's advice, I went out and got some PGA to soak it. I googled around to see if I could find some more specific instructions on how soaking it (how long, etc.), and I came across a gem- unfold a paperclip and stick it all the way through the battery. I did it, it tripped the switch, and now it works again!! When my replacement batteries come, I'll probably soak it just to get the gunk off, but this 10 second fix will at least keep me from resorting to analogs for the next couple days. BOOYAH!!

It's something that was recommended to me by a few people. I was a little sketchy on it too, hence the looking up instructions for it. But, I was looking at a (not very good) paperweight otherwise.

Can you get a shock sticking a paperclip in the battery? I have a 510 battery that is stuck on and I'd like to try it, but I don't want to get a shock or something
not at three volts I don't think...at least i doubt you'd feel it... a 9 volt battery that some ppl stick on the end of their tongue to test...I doubt you'd feel anything from a 3v batt

I did it on both of mine at various charge levels and couldn't feel anything. If you're super worried, you could do it with a rubber kitchen glove!

I got a 510 batt thats stuck on and I pulled off the tip. I do not see where i can get a paper clip in there. I tries it and it didn't go thru. Pulled off switch cover and could see the switch ontop of a circuit board but I cannot see a fix for it.
Oh! It's simpler than that- you put the paper clip in the part that screws in to the atty- no need to take anything off.
The point of the paperclip thing is to unlodge a switch that's been stuck in the on or off position because of liquid buildup. If you're using a sealed battery, that's not what's going on. You've got a different problem altogether, unfortunately.
I tried it on a 401 w/ a stuck on button. You can't tell by the button but is stays on when you attach an atty. The clip would only go in about 1/4'. The button is about 1/2' down. didn't help.
Any ideas for a m401?

This is for the manual M401 battery? As far as I understand it, the paperclip trick works on autos because the "switch" is down that little hole. This is likely not the case on an auto- I doubt anything you put in the hole will fix that problem, including alcohol. Maybe rip open the chassis and take a peak?
Yep Kyle, it's a manual. I think something to do w/ the button must be not working right. I'm kinda scared to rip it open though.

Well, the way I look at it- you currently have a worthless battery that the quick fixes didn't do anything for. Ripping it open has a likelihood of messing it up for good, but there's also a pretty good chance it's already messed up for good. Worst case scenario, you mess up a working battery, but you find out a little more about how it works. Medium case scenario, the battery is screwed, but you find out a little more about how it works. Best case scenario, you see something that's easily fixable, and you find out a little more about how it works. Really not a terrible scenario in the lot. Go for it!
Kyle, I was kind kidding like maybe it could blow up or something. Good advice you have given! There is a 401 taken apart on a batt thread in the model specific section but it was an auto. I know my prob must be in the button/switch part.
