Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and I started vaping just two weeks ago, At first i tried a couple of premade juices and I did like them quite a lot, but since it's way cheeper and looks more fun and customizable i decided to get into the diy side of it and started buying quite a few flavours mostly from Capella, TPA, Inawera and Flavour Art. I am currently using a sub ohm tank and a dripper: Horizontech Falcon II and Wotofo Profile 1.5 and i really like the feeling and the puffs from those devices, my mod is a voopoo drag 2 and i'm using mesh coils. I mix by weight.

I noticed that some of the flavours i bought i can't really taste them, when i first bought them i tried to mix 30 ml for each flavour to see what they tasted like and know what to combine together. I don't know why but even after two weeks I can barely taste vanilla flavours, even if I smell at them i get just a hint of what the flavour should be like. Only one that i can smell properly is Inawera Vanilla, but i can't tell if it's vanilla or just sweet juice with CAP vanilla custard v2 and vanilla bean icecream, same with TFA French Vanilla, Vanilla Creme, Vanilla Bean Icecream and Vanilla Swirl.

I made some mixes after that and I did like them, i made these recipes i found online that had the highest ratings and I think I am not getting the full flavour out of them:

Apple Butter
Apple Buttah
Butterscotch Custard
A Terkish Remix (butterscotch custard)
Coconut Icecream
thai coconut ice cream
Banana Split
Banana Split

I only tested the first three after almost two weeks of steeping, i steep them naturally by keeping them in a dark cool place and shaking them once a day if i remember.
I seem to get a muted flavour from them, The Butterscotch Custard at firts tasted quite intense and i got used to it pretty soon so now i can't really taste it, Coconut Icecream just tastes like sweet ejuice and Apple Butter (which i did with a lower dose of fuji like 2.7% instead of 4% as i've read it's really intense) i can taste the apple but i get just an hint of the other flavours.. Is it normal? I remember trying vaping a couple of years ago and getting this really vibrant vanilla flavour in my mouth and now everything tastes just slightly different or muted.

I did some research and already foundout about vaper's tongue, i think i may have had that because i was vaping this cotton candy and cinnamon flavour from big mouth and it was so intense that it was almost too much for me and after vaping that my mouth started to feel different for a couple of days, i bought some biotene to get extra hydration and i m drinking quite a lot of water, trying to avoid coffee and alchool but not getting much better results. I'd like to know if some of you have experienced similar issues and if you have any suggestions as it is getting quite frustrating. I stopped smoking two weeks ago and i still have a joint at times as i live in the netherlands and here is legal and i really don't want to start smoking cigarets again. The juices i made were 70/30 VG PG and now im makin them 65 35 as i read that more PG could bring more flavour. Sorry if I posted the exact same post as I did in the Newcomer secion but i got pointed out that this may be a better place to get opinions on this subject :)

One factor may be that premixed juice tends to have a very high % of flavoring in it. You said you could taste that fine. Also if you just quit smoking your taste buds might take a while to recover. Maybe try upping the amount of flavoring you use for a while.

Or like you said it might be vaper's tongue.

I was just told that i need to post more than 5 posts to show links so here are the recipes i tried in detail:

1) Banana Split:
5% TFA Banana Cream
1,5% TFA Double Chocolate (Clear)
0,25% FA Meringue
2,5% INW Shisha Strawberry
5% TPA/CAP Vanilla Bean Icecream (made two batches with both types)
1% TPA Vanilla Swirl
1% FA Vienna Cream

2) Cinnamon Roll Apple Danish
6% CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl
1% TFA Marshmallow
2.75% FA Fuji
1% CAP Vanilla Bean Icecream
1% TFA Vanilla Swirl
1% TFA Dragonfruit

3) Apple Buttah
2% CAP Butter Cream
0,5% FA Caramel
0,5% CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl
2.75% FA Fuji
0,5% FA Liquid Amber
1% TFA/CAP Vannila Bean Icecream
1% CAP Vanilla Custard

4) Butterscotch Custard
3% FW Butterscotch Ripple
0,5% CAP Super Sweet
1.5% TPA Toasted Marshmallow
4% CAP Vanilla Custard

5) Thai Coconut Icecream
1.25% FA Caramel
1% FA Coconut
4% Vanilla Bean Icecream

6) Pistachio Boy
3% FW Butterscotch Ripple
2% TPA Pistachio
3% RY4 Asian
4% CAP Sugar Cookie
0,5% CAP SuperSweet
3% TPA Vanilla Swirl

The first two i haven't really tested yet since i just made them a couple of days ago, the other ones i did make them almost two weeks ago and tested them after a week and yes i got the impression that i was tasting all muted flavours, only ones that i could get a solid hint (and still not a very vivid and vibrant flavour) were 6) Pistachio Boy and 4) Butterscotch Custard, number 3) Apple Buttah tastes ok but i only feel the hint of a slightly spicy apple and not really vivid too. I don't know if i expect too much or if i need time for my tastebuds or if i m making mistakes. I'll definitely try to mix some of the same recipes in higher flavour percentages as suggested and see if i get a vibrant taste then :)

I don't see anything wrong with your recipes. I will add this though, steeping is important.

@Letitia gave me valuable advice when I started DIY. I remember something she told me. You may taste nothing the first few days, then you will taste hints of what you are after. Then it ends up tasting bad the second week. Third week all flavor disappears... and then the fourth week it's like magic-- total flavor bliss.

I paraphrased above. I hope I remembered it correctly.

@Skeebo thanks for advice! so you think 4 weeks are usually required for diyjuices? I've read lots of different stuff on the subject and people usually tend to recommend a minimum of two weeks, interesting the fact that te flavour could be bad on the 2nd week and be absent on the 3rd and just on point on the 4th, i ll try to wait for those batches i made and see how they change in the next weeks, thank you again :) Do you think maybe going for simple recipes with less flavours for someone who just quit smoking (2 weeks ago) would make easier to recognize the different flavours? Or maybe try to put higher percentages of flavours at the beginning and slowly downgrade to the "reccomended" ones?

Some flavors and brands steep faster. Most fruits are good in 10 days and some are usually an acceptable vape within 3 days. Berries, apples, and pears can usually be vaped fairly quickly with a higher percentage.

These flavor profiles need a longer steep. Mix up a few simple just fruit recipes to vape while these steep.

The apple buttah recipe will start to come around at the 10 day mark and just keeps getting better from there.

Looking at your flavors that you have above, and this is just to get you by until some of your other mixes steep try:

2% Vanilla Swirl
2% Butterscotch Ripple
2% Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
1% Pistachio
1% Sugar Cookie

I suggest mixing a 10ml tester just to make sure you like it. The Butterscotch Ripple at 2% comes across as a very nice caramel flavor. The Vanilla Swirl, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, and Pistachio should bring a nice dense mouth feel, kind of creamy.

If you have Flavor West Hazelnut replace it for the Pistachio above. If you don't have it order it on your next flavor order. It is a very versatile flavor and adds creaminess to a mix at low percentages without overpowering a mix with hazelnut flavor.

Like Letitia pointed out mix up a few fruit mixes to get you by in the mean time. A lot of those are shake and vapes. I wouldn't mix up large amounts of one particular fruit flavor either..... they can fade over time.

First of all - welcome to ECF, and congrats on getting through your first 2 weeks smoke-free :thumb:

With regard to flavour percentage - you can always add more if need be. But it is harder to add less to a mix. Generally, most commercial juices are between 15-20%

I mixed at around 15% until my taste buds grew back ;) and now mix at 10-12%
Just experiment, and keep notes of every thing you do.

DIY is so much cheaper and so much more fun, than buying commercial juice :)

I didn't even consider that, good point @AngeNZ . Your taste buds need to recover some from the smoking. Not only will your juices taste better, food will too. By the way, I forgot to mention in regards to the recipe I left you above. Allow it to steep at least two days and it does continue to improve the longer it steeps.

I agree with the taste buds recovering from stopping smoking. They will improve.

And with my limited knowledge, Vanilla does take some time to develop. I mix my beloved White Tic Tac. It is Winter Peppermint, Madagascar Vanilla and Anise. I mix, shake and vape.

At first, heavy anise and mint, then the anise goes away at week 1.

Then about week 2 or 3, the vanilla kicks in.

I don't know what would happen after 3 weeks. I vaped it all, and start again!

One day, I should mix 60ml, and set it aside for a month.

    Good luck!

Welcome and glad you made the switch.
It's kind of difficult to start out DIY'g when you are still trying out new equipment and establishing your taste favorites. One shot flavors are starting to gain momentum for those interested in mixing their own and want to start out simple. One shot flavors (OS/Flavor Blends) are premixed flavors that are only designed to be used on their own and mixed with a base of Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin and Nicotine (at least one/two/all of the three).Say you use three flavors at 4%, 3% and 2.5%. The one-shot/concentrate is just an entire bottle of those three flavors in the correct ratio. One shot mixing is supposed to be close to the flavor promoted on the bottle. These mixes may allow some adjustment of the strength (percentage) of the mix. OS Mixing can be a good introductory to DIY. One shots and flavor blends are simply added per directions to the mixer's desired mixing base, Shake and Vape (SnV) or steep as directed.

Regarding your first post: I've also had difficulties with flavors getting muted. First few tokes are great, the next bunch not so good. That hasn't happened with naturally extracted tobaccos, but has with most other flavors. But, I can't do tobaccos all day either. Hard to understand, so it's hard to guide you.
And, I'll settle for muted flavors rather than avoiding coffee and booze.

Actually, I'm very impressed with your DIY... keep at it! Others have said mostly what I would have (and yes... takes awhile for your taste buds to recover) Just wanted to add that 70VG/30PG would still be better for your setups. I don't buy into the PG flavor thing. In fact, I like the natural sweetness of VG anyway. Last thought (might not relate) when I drink red wine it destroys my taste for the day. You might experiment with wattage and airflow too.
