Hey, I'm new to this community and I've never smoked previously, not as much as a cigarette. However, over the few months I've been considering trying it out as it seems like a decent way to unwind at the end of the day. A lot of my friends smoke, but up until this point I've stayed away from it because I didn't want anything to do with the tar and nicotine associated with tobacco. I've been browsing your forum and the e-cigarettes seem to be the perfect compromise. The diy aspect really appeals to me and as does how clean the vapor is. I see that many companies market these as only a tool for people to stop smoking and don't recommend that nonsmokers use them. Are they are people here who took to the e-cigarette without any prior smoking experience?

Not tryin' to be rude, but it honestly is not a good idea at all. If you aren't already addicted to nicotine, you shouldn't get addicted. Just because it (so far) seems healthier than an actual tobacco cigarette, the nicotine can still harm you. Every company I have seen actually doesn't market these as a tool for people to quit smoking. Instead it's more like an alternative. Not a NRT. If you want to, then that is your decision and most smokers will respect either decision (not to say that I can speak for all smokers) but I wouldn't start if I were you.

Please don't.

There are no long-term studies on e-cigrettes. We have no idea what happens 10 years down the line, or even 5 years. All of us are being guinea pigs, because it's our last hope.

Are e-cigs safer than cigarettes? Yes, almost certainly. But think about it... that's not saying much. Something doesn't have to be safe to be safer than cigarettes. And there is nothing fun about addiction.

Don't fool yourself - you are not above getting addicted. Even if it's just the habitual addiction of the smoking action, which is MUCH more powerful than you realize. It is actually the worst part of the addiction for me.

And using an e-cig with no nicotine won't unwind you. If you want to unwind, you will end up trying nicotine, sooner or later. And you'll regret it.

I still wish I wasn't an addict.

Also keep in mind your lungs are not designed to take in anything but clean, fresh air. Once again, "safer than cigarettes" isn't saying much.

Please, please don't.

I wouldn't recommend using nicotine if you haven't previously. If you do decide to get an ecig, look for 0-nic juice and/or learn about DIY mixing. If yours looks like a real cig, don't openly use it in public unless you want to find out what a pariah a smoker feels like in 21st century America.

edit: What Mistress said. We really don't know how safe these are, only that they are ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE safer than a cigarette. Considering what's in a cigarette, that's not saying much.

You WILL most likely develope a habit and then venture into nicotine because just vaping 0 nicotine will not unwind you at the end of the day like nicotine does. And since that's what you're looking for, my guess is it won't be long until you're wanting more out of the e-cig and decide to order some nicotine juice. Also, who cares that your friends smoke? Why would you want to be like them? Do you feel left out? If so, then don't. Your friends will be saying they wish they never smoked like you when they get cancer. It's best to just not venture into e-cigs. End thoughts.

EDIT: there's a reason companies do not recommend e-cigs for non smokers... Very little is known about the health effects e-cigs have on a healthy human body with no prior exposure to tar and the other 4,000 chemicals and carcinogens. There's also a reason they call it a healthiER alternative. It's not a HEALTHY habit, it's just healthier than traditional cigarettes. Who knows what kind of reactions your body might have considering you are a healthy non-smoker.

Hi there. I'm new here too. But I've done a lot of looking around on this subject, and reading comments and testimonials on e cigs, and I don't think you'll find anyone here who would be okay with someone *taking up* e cigarettes. This is clearly an alternative aimed at people who use tobacco, and would rather not.

And, while I'm sure the question is asked in good faith, I'd imagine some people might feel defensive about a question like that, as it looks like e cigs are becoming a political / regulatory hot potato, and this is *exactly* the kind of question someone who FEARS e-cigs would come to a forum like this and ask about, hoping be able to say that the Internet is full of e cig users telling non-smokers to hop on the nicotine addiction train.

But I've not seen that at ALL, and would be shocked if I ever did. No one should be even vaguely interested in this product if they don't already have a tobacco habit they'd like to reduce or eliminate.

i don't think it's a good idea.

for me it's not so much the nicotine addiction (and other chemicals in cigs) that were the issue. it's the act/routine of smoking that is the hardest thing to get past. after 15 years of being a pack a day smoker i found something that isn't as bad for me and i'm happy. like others have said, it will probably only be a matter of time before you start using liquid with nic in it and then you have a chemical addiction to deal with. not a good idea.

If you were considering smoking cigs OR using a PV then Id say use the PV but if you had NO intention of smoking then I really wouldn't start.
The hand to mouth habit is a really hard one to break - jsut ask a smoker one of the many reasons why the patch or gum doesn't work and this wil probably be high on the list.
Your lungs are going to go into shock - smokers lungs are used to having 'something' breathed in daily other than the dirty air we breathe (the air isn't clean so Im not going to pretend it is, and if you live in a city its almost like smoking lol), but your lungs will have you coughing and spluttering.
For smokers this is a bit of a vacation in lungland but for nonsmokers it would be like visiting a foundry all day without a breathing mask on.
If youre looking for ways to unwind yoga is much better for you.
If youre looking to be part of a group then join a club.
Don't think Im being harsh - its just commonsense. The majority of all vapers are ex smokers breaking long term habits and there are a few whose medical conditions benefit from nicotine (those people also mostly smoked but for the nicotine not the 'pleasure').
I do wish you well and hope you didnt take offense.

If you want to unwind, get an exercise bike or elliptical trainer and spend a half hour or so on it. A nicotine addiction isn't relaxing.

I have to agree with the others here, don't do it! I started smoking cigarettes 21 years ago. That's 21 years of horrible damage I've done to my body, 21 years of smelling like an ashtray, 21 years of literally burning money....

As the others have said, don't think that vaping will relax you at the end of the day. I'm sure you've read a lot of great things about vaping but it's from people who have been smoking cigarettes for many years. People who have tried all the countless other ways of quitting a bad habit only to find out those other ways didn't work!

I don't suggest anyone to start smoking or vaping if they've never done anything like that before! If you need to relax at the end of your day, find other ways of doing it! Yoga, meditation, taking a hot bath... anything but vaping or smoking!!!

I agree with the rest of the posters. But if your hell bent on trying it out I would get some 0nic juice, or just make your own, and grab a disposable you can refill a few times and see if it really is for you. As other pp have said though, that hand to mouth habit is not an easy thing to quit. It usually sticks with you for a very long time with cravings for it even after you stop. Not going to tell you how to run your life but my opinion would be to not start a bad of a habit as the hand to mouth one.

I had a friend growing up that started smoking at age 8 and quit when he was 16, but he continued to have a horrible OCD habit where he would bring his partially open palm to his mouth and inhale and exhale. He still has that problem and all of his psychiatrists said that it was directly caused by smoking at such a young age. Also he gets sick a lot from touching his hands to his face like that. Of course I'm sure he probably had some predisposal to OCD somehow but that just proves that the hand to mouth ritual IS addictive and potentially damaging mentally.

Totally agree, my grandpa quit smoking when my mother was 4 and she's now 42 and he still has that craving with the hand to mouth thing. And chewing pens does not help. it's a bad thing all together all around.

Please don't do it. I am SO grateful for having been introduced to e-cigs and quitting smoking after numerous attempts over 30+ years. But like my mother and stepdad who quit smoking 10 years ago and STILL chew nicorette daily - I imagine I'll be hauling on this thing for years to come. And that's fine with me - it feels fantastic! But don't tempt fate by "dabbling" in this. It is an alternative to cigarettes, not a lifestyle choice...

Please - just don't!

I have to say I've been nicotine free for over a year and I still vape. It's the hand to mouth thing and it is relaxing but it was not, IS NOT, easy staying away from the nicotine. And this is the reason why I say, DON'T DO IT because it's probably inevitable that you will try nicotine since you want to try vaping in the first place.
JUST SAY NO.

i may be a newb here but seriously listen to these guys they are dead on. do not start even with an e cig its not worth it. i have only smoked 5 years but i really wish i never started. no one here is trying to be a hardass or anything but we have all been through trying to quit before and theres thousands of years of combined experiance on this forum and im pretty sure that even if you start with a 0 nicotine liquid youll get curious and buy something with nicotine. we know what its like and we dont want to see anyone else having to go through it who dosent already smoke. if you need to unwind after a long day at work please try something healthier like taking a walk around the block or swimming if you have a pool, hell drink some hot tea. just please dont get in to smoking or vaping if you havent already.
