Probably not that many (if any) fellow submariners on here, but figured I'd share just in case. My submarine currently has allowed the use of ecigs in port and underway since the Navy banned smoking. I actually had a lengthy discussion with my captain right after the ban went into effect and managed to convince him to give it a shot. After almost a year since allowing ecigs, a large portion of the smokers on the crew have started vaping. The local tobacco stores are now carrying more and more ecig supplies too, like batteries, tanks, attys, etc. Not sure how may 100% converts there are like me, but at least it keeps some guys from picking up dipping underway, since that was previously the only other option underway. Of course, we have a very supportive smoking cessation program that allows for free nicorette and patches for the crew, but we all know that crap doesn't cut it to replace the hand to mouth habit.

Anyways, one word of caution, if you haven't experienced it yet, the large pressure transients when submerged can reek havoc on tanks! I've had a couple of serous tank leaks caused by the pressure changes, like entire tanks leaking out in my pockets! Just a heads up. I'm sure the same thing can happen on an airplane too.

Wow, thanks for the heads up! Thank you for your service, as well!

I am not a submariner, but a close friend of mine is. Can't recall what sub he's on, but we keep in close contact. He's a smoker and I haven't even thought about suggesting ecigs to him (sad to admit but I haven't really thought of him recently until just now). He's told me all sorts of funny stories. Mostly about how much he appreciates fresh, open air.

Apparently everything in a submarine smells like oil and farts. ;-)

As far as I can tell, neither of those two threads have any truth to them either. I'm pretty sure it would be pretty big news if there were any kind of official instruction or message concerning ecigs. I've started answering no to smoker, and that I'm using ecigs as my cessation method on my medical questionnaires. I have definitely heard and seen rumors regarding banning smokeless tobacco in the near future for submarines though!

Okay, so you inspired me to search for the real answer.

I haven't found an official policy yet, but this is kind of disgusting...

Check out page four.

I guess if they are going to work so hard to make electronic cigarettes sound so horrible, they must not have banned them.
Because if they had banned them, they would probably just say "SCREW YOU" and leave it at that.
;)

I'll keep looking though...

actually:

from 2010
Navy Medicine Goes Smoke Free
"E-cigarettes, which are not approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), are not an acceptable substitute for tobacco cessation," said Navy Surgeon General Vice Adm. Adam M. Robinson, Jr.
first - that was over 2 years ago.
second - I will agree that the FDA does say that the e-cig is not good for tobacco cessation.
third - the memo does not actually BAN e-cigs
fourth - It's been a bit over 2 years and I'm sure that the captain knows the rules as of now :)

I don't see anything else about it after 2010, so I'm sure it would be at the captain's discretion.
I also read that page 4, and it does not specifically say that they are banned. ;)

The Navy provides members with free tobacco cessation supplies, so if they recognized it as a substitute then they would have to provide it. I'm hoping it can just go on as a captain's option. Captains have always had the option as to what to allow and what not to allow, they are the captain after all. I have heard rumors from others that certain captains will still allow smoking on board, which is actually against official Navy policy.

They haven't opened anything new really, the old Church's Chicken by Harveys was turned into a donut shop, and is now Tobacco Planet. The El Cheapo over by Navy Fed has the best supply of ecig stuff around here from what I've heard.

I have nothing to add except to say thank you for your service. This is from a retired Naval Reservist. I was assigned to two different Sub Tenders over my many years in the Reserves (along with a FFG-7 class unit & a MSDU diving unit.) The Tenders never went anywhere & The Frigate never stayed in port!

I got nothing but respect for you Submariners. I'd go stir crazy on those small boats & not seeing the sun for long periods of time. Again, thank you for your service.
