Published today, and includes survey results from a recent ECF survey!

Survey Shows Adults Who Use E-Cigarettes To Quit Smoking Prefer Supposedly Juvenile Flavors - Forbes

Their ages ranged from 18 to “65 and over,” with 74 percent between 22 and 54. When they were asked which flavor they used most, 22 percent said tobacco, while an additional 3 percent said menthol tobacco. In other words, three-quarters of these adult vapers favor flavors other than tobacco, including fruit (31 percent), bakery/dessert (19 percent), and savory/spice (5 percent).

Who says ECF Members Can't Make a Difference?

Vaping-data-flavors.gif

The survey, conducted in late June and early July, included more than 10,000 members of E-Cigarette Forum, 78 percent of whom live in the United States. Their ages ranged from 18 to “65 and over,” ...

Publicly promoting sugary, flavored, addictive, obesity- & diabetes-inducing liquid caffeine to young children, causing their teeth & their little tummies to rot..

I don't know how you sleep at night, Rockefeller.. You're what's wrong with this country...

Given the results of the survey, the cigalikes ought to be more tightly regulated than egos and mods. If those politicians had any common sense, they wouldn't try to impose a de facto ban on mods and real juice.

Refillable vaporizers, available mainly online or in specialized outlets, are less likely to interest teenagers than the cheaper “cigalikes” sold in supermarkets and convenience stores.

The Choice of Drab Colors was by Design.

Because Everyone knows that Kids are Attracted to Bright Colors.

;)
That's actually what I was thinking when I noticed the color choices for the graph.

But I thought they should make tobacco and menthol some kind of bright neon color...
And the candy, fruit and dessert sections as drab as possible.

I've listed what I consider to be the most important findings of this ECF survey below, and will be sending this to my e-mail list next week (as well as to FDA). These survey findings are far more important (for assessing the public health impact of e-cigs) than all of the so-called research funded and conducted by FDA to date.

ECF survey of 10,000+ vapers (conducted in June/July 2014) finds:
- 7% of vapers who use Mechanical mods still smoke cigarettes,
- 8% of vapers who use Large/APV devices still smoke cigarettes,
- 17% of vapers who use Mid-sized devices still smoke cigarettes,
- 29% of vapers who use Rechargeable mini devices still smoke cigarettes,
- 49% of vapers who use Disposable e-cigs still smoke cigarettes,
- 92% of vapers worry government regulations would ban vaping products they use,
- 71% of vapers would NOT knowingly buy an e-cig sold by a tobacco company,
- 54% of dual users would NOT knowingly buy an e-cig sold by a tobacco company,
- 34% of vapers (who vaped for 0-3 months) bought first e-cig from a vape shop,
- 9% of vapers (who vaped 2 years or more) bought first e-cig from a vape shop,
- 26% of vapers (who vaped for 0-3 months) bought first e-cig from online vendor,
- 62% of vapers (who vaped 2 years or more) bought first e-cig from online vendor

ECF survey of 10,000+ vapers (conducted in June/July 2014) finds:
- 65.5% of exsmoker vapers consider flavors important in helping them quit smoking,
- 31% of e-liquid users mostly use Fruit flavors,
- 22% of e-liquid users mostly use Tobacco flavor,
- 18% of e-liquid users mostly use Bakery/Dessert flavors,
- 9% of e-liquid users mostly use Menthol flavor,
- 2% of e-liquid users consume 0-1 ml per day,
- 13% of e-liquid users consume 1-2 ml per day,
- 21% of e-liquid users consume 2-3 ml per day,
- 23% of e-liquid users consume 4-5 ml per day,
- 16% of e-liquid users consume 5-6 ml per day,
- 11% of e-liquid users consume 6-7 ml per day,
- 5% of e-liquid users consume 7-8 ml per day,
- 4% of e-liquid users consume 8-9 ml per day,
- 3% of e-liquid users consume 9-10 ml per day,
- 3% of e-liquid users consume >10 ml per day,
- e-liquid users reported using lower nicotine strength e-liquid in 2014 than in 2013

ECF survey of 10,000+ vapers (conducted in June/July 2014) finds:
- 35% use Mid-sized (ego/equivalent) device,
- 32% use Large/APV,
- 26% use Mechanical Mod,
- 4% use Rechargeable mini,
- 1% use Disposable e-cigs
- 2% use Other devices,
- 43% use Generation 2 tank (atomizer head)
- 37% use Re-buildable tank
- 10% use Re-filled cartomizer,
- 6% use Generation 1 tank cartomizer,
- 2% use Disposable atomizer,
- 2% use Pre-filled cartomizer,
- Use of tanks increased from 66% of vapers in 2013 to 86% in 2014,
- Use of Re-filled cartomizers declined from 30% of vapers in 2013 to 10% in 2014

It would be helpful to know the demographics of the 10,000+ vapers who participated in this survey (especially age ranges), as well as details of their different levels of past cigarette consumptin, and years/decades of past cigarette smoking.

I strongly suspect that vapers who consume higher amounts of e-liquid daily previously smoked lots of cigarettes/day, and that vapers who consume lower amounts of e-liquid previously smoked fewer cigarettes/day.

I was surprised to see that just 1% of vapers who participated in the survey use Disposable e-cigs.
Clearly, vapers who are ECF members are distinctly different than overall population of e-cig consumers, which of course would be the first thing cited by ANTZ to criticize and attempt to discredit ECF's survey findings.

I smoked on average about 6-7 cigarettes per day.
I have been using about 1ml per day of 12mg strength liquid for the last five years.

But you do have to factor in the equipment being used.

The more power your device produces, the more liquid you will go through.
That's why higher power vapers reduce their nicotine strength to compensate.

It isn't an easy extrapolation when you have to consider power and juice consumption.

Hi Bill,

We are working on the rest of the data, including doing the analyses you suggest.

You are correct that our sample probably does not generalise to the overall population, but I'd be surprised if it didn't generalise to those of vapers that are experienced and dedicated. This is not a small number of people, and is growing fast - the "hubs" of this community are the independent vape stores and online distribution, and there are now an estimated 14,000 dedicated vape stores in the US alone (estimate comes from Ron Tully of National Tobacco Company). ECF itself continues to grow, anticipating some 8-10 million unique visitors this year alone - one would expect the online sector to grow commensurately.

Furthermore, 88% of the overall sample have made the full transition to vaping from smoking and, of the remaining 12% that dual use, cigarette consumption has declined massively: a mean of 15 cigarettes per day (with a large SD, as one would expect).

Accordingly, when I spoke with Riccardo Polosa, expressing my concerns over the non-generalisability of the sample, he made the following point:

"This may be true, but what you are able to show is a "model of success" - given that 88% have quit smoking, the factors which have enabled them to do so are exceedingly important, and these are what you are reporting"

I strongly suspect that vapers who consume higher amounts of e-liquid daily previously smoked lots of cigarettes/day, and that vapers who consume lower amounts of e-liquid previously smoked fewer cigarettes/day.

I can see why this makes intuitive sense, but it's confounded by device type and time vaping. The big trend over the last year has been sub-ohm vaping (it accounts for 20-odd percent of the sample) - and these vapers consume very large quantities of low-strength e-liquid. To find the association you're anticipating we'd have to exclude these users.

But, even without these users, I'm not sure the association is necessarily as strong as one might anticipate. For instance, the strength of e-liquid does not just contribute to its pharmacological effect, but also to the sensory effect (higher nicotine content creates a greater throat-hit).

Accordingly, you'll find some vapers choose lower strength e-liquid (because they don't like the sensory effect of strong e-liquid) but vape much more of it.

Furthermore, there appears to exist a phenomenon whereby vapers reduce the nicotine strength (and possibly frequency of use) over time. Ann McNeil has hypothesised that long-term vaping actually changes the profile of dependency.

So, two analyses are needed - the strength of e-liquid and previous smoking behavior, and previous smoking behavior and eliquid consumption.

And both these analyses should probably be limited to "recent vapers" - i.e. people who have vaped for 3 months or less (about 1/4 of our overall sample) - and non sub-ohm (reducing this figure by a quarter).

Since the amount of use mechanical mods combined with re-fillable tank systems has increased you should also take into account that the nicotine level of used e-liquid has decreased. This is due to, in my opinion, more powerful devices produces more vapor which increases the consumed liquid amount. With powerful devices the throat hit with high nicotine values is so high that vapers lowers their used nicotine level. Daily nicotine consumption of nicotine will remain about the same level as with less powerful devices.

I was a pack (20) a day person and when using 1st gen tank devices with 12mg/ml e-liquid my daily consumption was ~4-5 ml/day. Now with mechanical mod with genesis style atomizer it is about 9-10ml of 6mg/ml solution. So the used liquid amount has no correlation to the smoking history. You should calculate the daily nicotine amount of a vaper and compare that to cigarette consumption.
