[Brief background: smoked for 25 years, started vaping about eight months ago, longtime lurker, first-time poster.]

Just for fun, when I went in for my physical this year, I didn't tell my doc I'd quit smoking. Wanted to see if he'd notice anything and make any mention of it. He's been my doctor since I was 19 (I'm 39 now) and he's been pestering me to drop the cancer sticks for that whole time.

Anyway, I went in last week, they ran me through the normal battery of tests, and he called me up this morning to talk over the results. First words out of his mouth were "Why didn't you tell me you quit smoking? Your blood pressure is down, your resting heart rate is down, your lung capacity's up, and your chest x-ray looks about 10 years younger than the last one we took." It was then that I told him I'd given up the analogs and switched to e-cigs a while back, and here's where it gets a little disconcerting.

My doctor had no idea what e-cigarettes are or what they do. His exact quote was "Wow, I didn't know there was no tobacco in those things. I thought the only difference was that they heated the tobacco instead of burning it, but it was still tobacco smoke." From there, we had about a 10-15 minute conversation wherein I explained to him how e-cigs actually work, what the ingredients are in the liquids, the absurdity of the current moral panic, the ulterior motives of Big Tobacco and Big Pharma, I pretty much tried to cover as many bases as I could, because he was literally a blank slate on the entire subject.

Shortly before we hung up, he sighed and said "I really have no excuse for not having known all this. If I had, especially now that I've seen firsthand how much your health has improved in less than a year, I would've been recommending these things to my smoking patients who have tried and failed to quit with the gums and patches and whatnot."

I made sure to tell him that, as a smoking cessation device, the evidence is still mostly anecdotal, but that it might interest him to check out this forum and others like it to see just how mountainous and compelling the body of anecdotal evidence actually is. I also directed him to Dr. Siegel's blog, so hopefully he's at home right now giving himself an overdue crash education.

In summation, as if we didn't already know, the level of ignorance and misinformation we have to deal with remains absolutely staggering, and it extends all the way to reputable physicians like mine. I suppose all we can do is to keep fighting the good fight. Hopefully I did some good in the world today.

I think you did indeed do something good for the world, as well as yourself. :) Education is the key - if we could get the medical industry behind us, it would be amazing.

THAT SAID... my ex-mother-in-law is a retired physician and I have seen firsthand how hard the pharmaceutical industry works to get doctors prescribing their stuff. Before they started cracking down, she was constantly getting flown on trips all over the world (you know, for "conferences"), dinner at some of the most expensive restaurants in Boston, her house was filled with nothing but branded swag - pens, clocks, magnets, pot holders (no, really!), anything and everything that could have a drug brand printed on it was thrown at her. Regulation on what the drug companies can do to influence doctors is much stricter now but man oh man did they throw a lot of money at them. And it worked! She was a consummate pill pusher, not just for her patients but her family and herself. Have the sniffles? Here's a Z-pack. Have a rash? Oh, here's a cream for that. We used to get loaded up with samples of just about everything.

Your doctor sounds awesome and I'm really encouraged to hear his response to your elucidation on e-cigs. :)

I haven't been to my primary doc since I stopped smoking and started vaping, but I did see my chiropractor today and told him. He said he knew something was up because my color was so much better (and that I'd gained some weight, but we won't go there, LOL). He is on the younger side and was "up to date" on vaping, even though in this wee town I live in that was a surprise in and of itself. Vape on (his advice and mine--we shall see what the primary guy says in a couple of months).

I am glad to see your Dr is at least open to this

In my town the medical professionals all seem to be completely anti-vaping to the point of one Dr actually telling me that she would prefer that I went back to smoking. Now keep in mind that all the health care professionals in this area are ALL affiliated with the local hospital (which also owns all the hospitals in the surrounding area also, but claims to be non-profit - riiight - my last outpatient procedure turned in to a three day stay with 2 days in intensive care and an extra $100K on the bill) and there is a brand new cancer wing that needs to be paid for.

I just feel that most medical professionals are anti-vaping due to a fear of losing income from treating conditions that are normally associated with smoking.

Just my 2 cents and I welcome any medical professionals to respond to this.

That's so awesome! Congrats on the health improvements! That's so great that you explained everything to him he will likely pass this life savingninfomon. Here's my story:

i reconsidered vaping after my dr suggested I quit smoking due to an upcoming minor surgery. She literally said I could smoke 2 a day if I had to and I saw no point in it. I struggled with vaping and only used it if I was traveling so after her suggestion I looked back into it and here I am. I'm doing both but have cut down a lot. I've made a bunch of vape mistakes too regarding nic levels and pg/vg ratios.

I don't have insurance so she doesn't push much on me in the way of medications which is nice. She also seems really grounded and I'm glad she knew about ecigs and was able to suggest some ways of using it as a cessation method. On a funny note, I teach pole, fitness and she now recommends my classes to patients who can benefit from a fun based exercise.

Congrats on the good checkup, now call your doctor back, let him know there's a section of ECF for doctors ONLY...:)

It's in the Medical Professionals Private Forum
A private board for qualified medical personnel. Admittance only on application to Admin (please see Contact page).

Thanks for the heads up; I'm going to email him the link right now.

Hi Nate and I just wanted to say, "You Rock !!!!" That you took the time to explain vaping to your MD (and that your MD listened) is fantastic. You've just added some very positive stuff to the Universe that may continue the ripple effect of people learning more about vaping from vapers, rather than just from academic studies (though I also believe those are valuable).

Keep up the good work, congrats on your physical and thank you. Keep the vape and namaste.

Nate, your story is the best thing I've read in a long time.:) I'm happy you have made such great physical improvements since you started vaping. That would be great if that was all there was to your story. But then, the doctor part just made my day!

Kudos to you for taking the time to explain everything to your doctor, and kudos to the doc for having such an open mind and being so interested in finding out more about this wonderful thing we're doing.

A big :thumb: to both of you!

That you took the time to explain vaping to your MD (and that your MD listened) is fantastic.

This is one reason why I've always held my doctor in such high regard, both personally and professionally. Many (I would even venture to say most) MDs in his position wouldn't be comfortable admitting that a patient might know more about a health-related issue than they do. We've all had experiences with arrogant, haughty doctors rolling their eyes at us and brushing our questions/comments aside, for no better reason than because they presume themselves to be our automatic intellectual superiors by virtue of the framed diploma on their wall.

My doctor, on the other hand, understands that one person can't keep track of every single thing that happens in the field of medical research and technology. There have been a couple of occasions down through the years when I've been dealing with a more specialized medical issue that doesn't necessarily fall under the normal purview of a general practitioner. In these cases, when I've taken the time to do my own research on a topic that directly affects my physical well-being, my doctor has been more than willing to listen to my findings and allow me to have input regarding my course of treatment. There's never been any of that "I'm the doctor, you're the patient, we're doing this my way and that's all there is to it" nonsense.

This morning's phone conversation was no different. This guy's known me more than long enough to know I don't presume to speak authoritatively on a subject I haven't done due diligence in researching, so he sat there and listened intently while I explained the facts on this topic to the best of my knowledge, then he thanked me for taking the time to share the information with him. This is how a doctor acts who actually cares about being well-informed and good at their job, rather than having their first concern always be the safeguarding of their own ego.
