I have been vaping now for about 4 hours (not continually, trying to keep it just like cigs), but I am noticing a peculiar taste in the mouth. Hard to describe, a bit like organic chemical/rubber is the closest I can set it to.
Is it because the atomizer is new and will this wear off in time, or is this the normal taste?
I am obviously comparing it to tobacco smoke, but it is nothing like this.
Am I expecting too much in the first trial of this.

I seriously want to give it a go, but the taste is off-putting.

I don't know what it is. I just know everyone complains that it tastes bad at first.

It's also true your cart could be getting dry. Pop it out and look at it. Sometimes I'll see a thread or two sticking out of there and that bad taste is because they are sort of burning - not hot enough to truly burn them, I don't think, but it gives a bad taste, sort of like burning hair or something. Yuck!

Expectations might be high as well. So far there is no real tobacco taste. It should remind you of tobacco. I dont see why they bother to name flavors after specific brands of cigarettes. It really gets your hopes up.. I'll quote myself from another thread regarding this "new" taste:
I think you just have to adjust to a flavor. Just like your first cigarette none of this is actually yummy. If you are smoking analogs with e-cigs you will still be comparing the two and attempting to match the taste of your favorite brand. I would bet that if you give any one flavor (that does not make you puke) about a week, you will become familiar with it and eventully like it. I smoke a regular cigarette once a week and that first puff just about does make me hurl. After about three puffs my brain seems to remember why I liked to do this so much. I am sure if I went a whole day smoking real cigs, my e-cig would not taste good again. I try not to switch around from flavor to flavor for this very reason. I am in it for the nic and nothing more. In short, I bet if I trained my dog to bite me in the ... 14 times every half hour for 30 years I would probably learn to like that too.

That's true. It doesn't taste the same at all. However, the first thing my husband and I noticed with e-cigs was a sweet taste, not a burning chemical taste, so that's why I figured this issue was a new atomizer.

Yup .... the issue probably _is_ the new atomizer ... that factory primer is nasty stuff .... someone here suggested blowing it out .. blow through the battery end .. on to a paper towel ... helps get the yuck out ... then I drop a couple drops of my "flavor of the day" directly on the atomizer, put cart back in .. and good to go ... It will take a day or two to "break in" atomizer, and for your taste buds to figure out they have something new to play with ... it does get better .... promise ! :D

damilis....I'm brand new to vaping too, only been about 6 days and I had the exact same thing...as cssreb says it sounds like you may be smoking the cart dry. The one thing I learned fast is that the carts don't last anything like the sites online say. You should get some liquid and top up your carts yourself. Personally I have found that to match my old style of smoking, I have to use 3 or 4 drips of liquid.

If you keep your cart nice and moist with liquid, you'll start to enjoy it alot more!

Could be primer but after 4 hrs... try topping of the cart, I get a nasty taste whenever the fiber material looks dry (even if the cart's still got juice)

or try a new cart if you don't want to/can't drip.

As others have posted, buy a bottle of juice and just add a few drops to the cart when the vapor and taste drop off. Not too much you don't want to soak it, just make sure each drop soaks into the material.

Also by topping the carts it will save you a few more ££'s than buying more and more carts. Use the same cart for a day or two just topping it off when needed.

Let us know how it goes & Good luck with your vaping!

I have made things a wee bit better, thanks to all the good advice.
I cleaned the atomizer, then extracted some fluid from 5 carts (as demo'd by one of you guys in the 'how to' thread...brilliant), and topped up and dripped. Whilst doing this, I did smell the taste I was referring to.

Much more 'smoke' than before, stronger hit.

The funny taste is not as obvious now, maybe I am acclimatising to it, or maybe it is the flavour of carts I got - I naturally chose tobacco. Perhaps I should try another flavour, eg vanilla.
Because the flavours that come with the liquid is a pure chemical, perhaps this is why it tastes so unnatural and synthetic.

My main worry was that the taste seemed more toxic/carcinogenic than tobacco smoke. Having read the thread on the lack of quality control in the chinese production, can anyone direct me towards a European or North American producer of the stuff?

Once again, thanks for all the great help... Perhaps 4 hours was a bit premature to criticise my change in lifestyle.
