I was so impressed with a real vaporizer and it's effectiveness with me, I've tried encouraging my girlfriend to give it a try. She's a 20 year smoker too. She's tried it a few times and as fast as she can try it, she's coughing, and wincing at the experience. She actually said "If this is what it takes to quit smoking, I don't want to have anything to do with it."

I'm sure I have much reading and learning to do, but is this common? Are there reasons for the coughing? I know it's different as I don't "smoke" a vaporizer the same way I would a cigarette. Are there any techniques to try or is it all an individual affair with setups, juice concentration, flavors, etc needing to be customized to work for that one person?

I'm sure this has already been answered probably many times over, but if you could chime in briefly I'd appreciate it. :)

My gf did the same exact thing. Took me numerous tries and different juices and all kinds of batteries. Eventually, I took her to a local vape shop, she got to try all the juices there and found the flavor and strength she likes. And volia, the coughing stopped. I think it has more to do w/ how vapor and cig smokes are actually different and how we inhale it. I know when I vape, it doesn't feel like how I used to smoke. Maybe it will just take her a couple more tries on something that she actually likes to make it work.

I've tried the tough ways to quit- cold turkey, patches, pills, acupuncture. Compared to that, vaping is a cake walk.

Maybe she really doesn't want to quit? Tell her to inhale into her mouth, open her mouth a bit then inhale into her lungs. If she really wants to give it a shot, maybe order her a mild flavor (I got someone with the same problem a vanilla mint) and low nicotine and get her to practice a bit.

I don't know if it's common or not. I have two sisters that cough too. One is now vaping and got over the coughing and one still isn't.

Ok.......that helps. I'm thinking maybe my juice "American Blend", a cigarette flavored juice, could be quite harsh. I even have to hesitate or "take care" when inhaling, as it is a bit of a shock at first to the ole lungs. I do a little inhaling and more mouth/nose circulation, if you will.

I'm not sure if it's PG or VG. I've tried some of the flavors at the local shot outside of "cig" flavors. At the time I was more amazed with how great these flavors were than if they were less harsh to inhale or not. Maybe on the next visit, I can ask them if there are juice blends that are less harsh to inhale. I've seen nothing but every gender and age at the local vape shop talking about their own success that I'm certain there is a combination for anyone. Heck if I can walk in and try a few cig flavors, walk out and not touch another cigarette, there's gotta be a solution for just about anyone.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I've noticed that people resistant to quitting seem to cough... I don't know if its something in their head (there is a slight difference in the feel of the vapor) that makes them do it, or if it's really that harsh.

I started vaping with no problems, no coughing. My husband started vaping with no problems, no coughing. A friend of mine (who is still smoking) took a few hits, coughed, said no thanks and that was it. My other friend ran out of cigarettes, bummed a setup from me (out of sheer desperation with absolutely NO intentions of quitting) and hasn't smoked a cigarette since! She still has my twist, lol.

The two people that I have gotten to try my setup coughed the first couple of times. I had to walk them through how to vape. One of them was my boss. after the fourth or fifth hit, she finally figured it out. I think she is considering giving this a try. She is a heavy smoker so I really hope she does. Time will tell. ;)

I should probably add that I had 60/40 PG/VG and 24mg nic.

Is she drawing the vapor directly into her lungs? I've read that some smokers do this but when I was smoking I would just draw into my mouth and then inhale.
X2 on that.

Also, she may be just taking to big a hit. Many newbie vapers I have encountered take long exaggerated puffs that produce a plume of vapor their throats were not prepared for.

Another thought, maybe a variable voltage device like the eGo Twist would allow you to dial in a lighter vape and let her work up to heavier (if she wants). A 2.6 to 2.8 ohm atty would allow the greatest latitude for dialing in on a Twist.

I'm willing to bet that her first experience smoking cigarettes was quite the same...lots of coughing, wincing, and wondering why the heck she wanted anything to do with it.

The truth is, who knows why any of us started? But we did...and just like her, for whatever reason we toughed through it. We persevered, to finally gain a tolerance for something that tasted horribly bad, that we forced ourselves to proclaim an enjoyment for, and that we knew was terrible for our health.

You might remind her that the reasons to stick with this far outweigh (in importance) her reasons for being so tenacious regarding becoming a smoker. Not liking it from jump is irrelevant. There are a myriad of devices, accessories, and juices that might end up delighting her well beyond the point that a cigarette ever did.

She owes it to herself to try again...and again...and again...

I know a girl, she has copd, very wheezy and still smokes. She coughs when trying vape. She coughs immediately and hard. Maybe the more lung damage you have sustained the longer it takes to break in to vaping. I think it might be related to lung damage if it's to harsh from pg, flavors and nicotine content or a partially hot dry hit
