I may not be thinking on the same track as you, Zealous, but I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in just the same.
I have co-workers who are attempting to quit smoking with E-cigs--not anything even remotely good, just using the convenience store crap.
They'll vape for a few days, maybe a week--then back on the stinkies. I've counseled them when they asked my advice for a good long time. In their cases, I'd be happy if they bought an Ego. It'd be a step up from what they're using. I've said time and again: "Don't buy the cheap junk, you'll be disappointed with vaping and give it up". All to no avail.
Now these guys are not wealthy but they could afford to buy something better. They can afford Marlboros at $8 a pack.
Like I said previously, this isn't quite what you were referring to but bear with me just one more minute.
What it comes down to is the willingness to make the commitment. For many of us, once we step beyond a certain dollar figure, we are truly commited to making this work. The dime store variety Ecigs don't put us there--we don't have that much invested in vaping, we can still slip back to our old ways telling ourselves, "Well, I tried".
I think the folks you refer to also lack that kind of conviction. Maybe I've been a REOnaut so long that I have a difficult time relating to a recovering smoker who isn't......well, passionate about the dire importance of becoming tobacco-free--at any cost.
Have I rambled? Indeed I have. Sorry about that. Hope I made some sense.:)

Yeah, but...

You can't buy into - or sell - the "magic wand syndrome" either. I don't know how many times I've said it when someone is trying to "make someone quit" - vaping isn't a magic wand that makes anyone quit, it's only a method to get there. It won't matter it's a $12.00 eGo blister pack or a $300.00 god knows what - if someone hasn't found their reason(s) to quit yet it won't happen. Then all you will end up with is someone who is really p.o.'d at you for talking them into buying a $300.00 god knows what.

When I was a kid I quit a 2 PAD habit with a Joyetech eGo setup that used... attys with cartridges. Quitting smoking didn't just begin in the vaping community with the advent of RDA's. There are lot's of hardware ways to get there. Blaming the hardware itself can be a cop out for a lack of motivation or desire to quit.

I recently found a pack of blue foam filters in an old box of vape gear. Part, or most, of why I appreciate my REOs so much is the journey I took to get here. I vaped over 3 years before finally deciding to see what all the fuss was about.

Had I found REOs early on in my journey, I would not appreciate them near as much as I do now. All my experience with everything else under the sun led me here, and I wouldn't change that.

I posted this in a thread earlier this week. I have a good friend that uses a Spinner and loves it. I let her try my ProVari and my Reo for a couple of weeks each. She thought the ProVari was a glorified Spinner that costs too much. And didn't like having to squonk every third hit. She likes her Spinner and it's good enough for her. Hey I'm just happy she's off the stinkies. I helped her into vaping when she started using Cigalikes. She's happy and so am I.

I'd love to have all the money back I've spent of Kanger T2's, Protanks, AGA-T2 (have 4), RSST's, #500 SS Mesh, and etc.
Would have enough to buy Reo Grand #2.

It wasn't until I used a DRIPPER that I realized that I was getting the best flavor, taste, nic hit, and TH. And are easiest to work with in the end. Coil gets gunked up - no problem. Pop the cap off, tug the Cotton out with tweezers... and dry burn. Reinsert New Cotton ...OR if you don't have it, just put the old back in temporarily.

So basically, my advice to anyone starting out will be this basic kit:
1. Get a IGO-L dripper. ($9.95 apiece)
2. Joyetech Ego-C Twist 1000mah battery. ($27.95)
3. Kanthal 30g 100ft roll ($4.75)
4. CVS Sterile Rolled Cotton (then KGD later on) ($5.64)
5. Ohm meter ($19.95)
6. HHV juice products. ($13.00 for 30ml)

Total = $81.24.

...The above will essentially give a NEW Vapor the BEST vape they could ask for. Much better than Blu's starter pack, and cheap eGo 650mah Clearomizer Combos. Of course you have the learning curb, but once you're passed it.... it's a great vaping experience going forward. Gas Station Cigarette lookalikes just don't get the job done at all!! They won't have a good experience and will be back on the Cigarettes in no time.

When you use a Dripper for awhile... the Reo Grand will make more sense one day. ;)

But like Unsure and Bushmaster mentioned... people must have a desire to get into Vaping. They have to be willing to spend some money to get off conventional tobacco products. You'll spend twice as much on Nicotine patches, gum, hypnosis, and probably electrocution as well. So why not Vape? It's the lesser of the two evils.

Quit diddling around and just get a Reo honestly its easier than smoking ever was and unlike those fiddly finicky phallic looking devices your looking at now you will be set for life with very little fussing about :D

I never thought of tube mods as phallic. I thought of them more like vaping a pipe bomb......that's just me.

I'm not having a go at you at all FTS - i'm saying that there are more things in common than there are differences. But 'just get a Reo' is not necessarily a blue sky and rainbows solution to everyone's problems. (that's to Zealous)

And i'll tell you why: squonking is not for everyone - i know people with arthritis and hand problems that find it hard.
Same with wrapping coils and so on.

I'm not interested in all the tanks and the rest, RDAs are my thing and have been for some time now.

But the day a Reonaut offers no help is when i'll change my banner.

T

Your perspective on squonking is interesting as I have carpal tunnel in my wrists & don't find squonking a problem. I do think it might be harder for arthritic users though. But my thinking is that messing with those little evod/protank heads is much harder with these hand problems than squonking.

HST, I don't want anyone to misunderstand. I don't think everyone with any kind of vape problem should just "get a REO". I know some people are quite happy with an Ego style set up & that's perfectly great imo. I stayed with Twists/EVods for 2 years before even bothering to look at anything else. But I didn't have problems with my set up that I couldn't work out. I liked the form factor of that set up & I was happy with it. The reason I wanted something else wasn't because of poor performance in what I had. It was because I wanted to have a set up that didn't consist mostly of consumable pieces.

But when someone is asking for the most trouble free set up or they're having copious problems with their clearo set up I just feel disingenuous suggesting an ego/protank set up when I believe that is absolutely not a trouble free set up.

I guess I just need to face the fact that because I haven't had the hit or miss experience so many other vapers have had I simply don't have the experience to help with that many problems. I'll just continue to help with things I know have worked for me.

Glad I came across this thread. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a reo or reo like device, but had some questions/concerns. Like some have mentioned, I'm draw to the reo because it does look to solve many problems (ease of cleaning/ rewicking on the do, less cr** to break, hold a sh** load of juice....). My questions are on the connection (510) and availability of drippers to use on such a device. Ever since I started vaping I have seen major problems with the construction of MANY devices. I would as a metal worker/welder. So when I see attys made of copper or brass, even if there chromed or coated, I stay clear of them. This is my biggest concern with a reo type device. I know the juice is fed to the atty through the 510, has this been made differently than normal 510's? Is it made of brass or copper or S.S.? I want to stay clear of juice that come into contact with brass or copper.... Lastly, does someone make "kits" to convert atty's to bottom fed or are there only certain ones than can be used? For instance, I love the magma.... could this be converted to use on a reo? Any help someone could give would be appreciated, I just don't know anyone who uses these to ask my stupid questions too

David after reading the link Mackman provided come visit us in Reoville Reos Mods You will find a bunch of folks willing to answer any and all questions about our Reos. There is some knowledge you need to have before jumping into the mech pool, most important is battery safety but the Reonauts can point you in the direction of where to study up on it :).

The LP (low profile) version of a Reo is designed to work with/fit most RDA's - as far as making 510 electrical contact. After that, this guy is doing a lot of work to modify whatever can be modified to turn it into a bottom feed atty. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-supplier-forum/581604-catfish-atty-mods.html

Bear in mind that a lot of the complaints and design "issues" people have with typical RDA's aren't issues or things you need to chase with bottom feeding on a Reo. i.e.: The chase for a bigger and bigger juice well - practically turning an RDA into a genny in the process - is something you don't need bottom feeding with a Reo. Makes your atty choosing much simpler.

under the blue sky
"the reo is not for everyone"...

I see that a lot. -- I've learned a thing or two involving myself in discussions here on ECF for 3 1/2 years... and the year I read before I decided I wanted to say something...

From the tens of thousands of threads and probably hundreds of thousands of posts I've read here on ECF, I have gathered this as fact: When people say they are looking for a PV of any sort, they say they want 1) Reliability 2) Durability 3) Not to have to mess with it to make it work 4) Long battery life 5) other details like big, small, preferred color, and maybe 25 other little details. The little details are almost always last in the wish lists...

Now and then, someone is absolutely sold on VV or VW or they absolutely must have the smallest device ever made or whatever... but when it comes right down to it in a discussion - Reliability - Durability - Don't have to mess with it.

What I have seen from REO: Wood - Metal - Low Profile - Low weight - Colors Galore - Mini - Grand - VV for a while - Easily Kickable coming one of these days (etc etc etc) - and REO continues to evolve and innovate to give users the experience they want.

Once upon a time, the rule of thumb for advice on ECF (and other forums) was that devices like REOs were "advanced" and they shouldn't be recommended to n00bs. I myself probably told a whole bunch of people they should get an ego battery and some cartos or whatever. - I regret that because I know better now.

REO's might not be for the strict definition of "everybody"... but there really is a REO for everybody. And if that REO that is just right for him, her, or you doesn't exist right this minute, it probably will sometime in the future because ROB keeps making cool stuff and keeps making the existing cool stuff better. Those who don't think a REO is for them probably never had a REO.... and I can't count the number of times I've read someone saying they had a REO and got rid of it because it "wasn't for them" just to later discover that was a fib because they either have an inferior product they want to justify to themselves or simply because they are anti-REO due to some "us vs them" nonsense in their head that some people seem to get wrapped up in from forum use...

I think REOs come a lot closer to what I've seen the most people say they want than any other available device... and they are of such quality that they are also one of the very few devices that are able to live up to expectations long term. There are other companies making similar quality devices. There are other excellent devices on the market. It may even be that one of those might be more appropriate for this or that individual.... but for any vape enthusiast or any vaper at all considering any mod at all, dismissing a REO as "not for everybody" is a mistake because the fact is, it probably is for everybody. Something else might be a more appropriate or desirable choice at this moment in time, but anyone who does make such a choice deserves to properly weigh the choice they are making and give REO some thought because it is indeed a gold standard device.

So I'm curious, when someone has posted a problem with something you KNOW will always be somewhat a problem (ie hit or miss on clearo head quality) what advice do you give?

There has been a lot of great response to this already Zealous, but I thought I would toss mine in too anyway :)

The most important thing for me is to actually read the post, understand it and then try to answer it to the best of my ability. That takes a bit more time than just skimming the post and giving a 'stock', one size fits all reply. For example, if someone asks why does my Protank leak, I try to answer that question instead of suggesting another clearo, or suggesting that cartos are better. IMO cartos are better than clearos (if you know how to set them up right), but the poster asked about how to deal with PT leaks, not for suggestions of better gear. If I don't know how to stop a Protank from leaking, I won't say it can't be done, I don't post. I mean, a lot of people use Protanks so someone must have figured it out.

As far as something always being a problem, there is almost nothing I know of on the market today that can not be made to work if you know how to do it. Yes, some products are better and some are just bad and if I know it is a bad one I'll say it. That doesn't happen much anymore though. What does still happen is most devices need to be tilted one way or the other, or assembled a certain way, or dry burned a certain way, or maintained a certain way and if someone doesn't know what is required they will always have grief. People's expectations are also all over the map. For some, tilting is not an issue, for others it's a deal breaker. I think it's a personality thing. I've also seen people complain because they have to change heads weekly and they can't understand why the technology isn't better than that. Oh, and those heads are $1.50 a pop and that's too expensive, but they don't want to dry burn them because they tried that once and it didn't help

But most people really are quite reasonable and if they get good answers they learn and it gets better for them. Plus, nothing we vape doesn't have its little tricks and quirks attached, even our Reos ;).

Anyway, that's my $0.02.
