I'm almost as 'boonie' here... I'm WAY up near Canada. Noooo, not Buffalo!! 6 hours north of Buffalo.. REALLY WAY up there! I'm on the St. Lawrence River,, and I guess we're a little bit bigger than you, but not by much! We have a Walmart, we have a Home Depot, we have a mall... if you can call it that. The only stores left are the anchor stores, so we expect it'll close soon. So for any shopping that isn't Walmart,, we have to travel at least two hours in any direction. To catch a plane is minimum 3 hours. We do have a movie theater with 6 screens (I think,, I don't go much!) Lots of boonie-towns in NYS.. so whey someone asks you where you're from and you say New York,, do they automatically assume NYC?? For me, when I say 'upstate' people think Albany... hell, there's a whole 'nother part of the state north of that, y'know!!! Like, 4 HOURS north of that!! I go to Canada for a cup of coffee if I feel like it.. now, THAT'S north!

I think I just got a nosebleed!! I think anything north of Dallas is yankeeland, I'd never make it up there. They wouldn't know what to do with me anymore than I'd know what to do with them. lol

 I would have died of fright. LOL

Had a bad experience in an airplane once. We were emigrating from Russia (I was 17), flying on a Russian airplane (a bucket of bolts) - two engines, and one exploded. That was... interesting. Fortunately the pilot was very good, and we made it to Budapest. Barely. Then they worked on the durned plane for 8 hours, and we had to fly the same one to Austria. Never trusted airplanes since...

Oh, and later I was flying from Newark to Columbus (went to grad school at OSU), and the airplane got into bad weather - it was like riding one of those death-wish roller-coasters (hate those to begin with), and then in the middle of it all, one of the pilots comes out of the cockpit and goes to the back of the place, and I swear, he looked green...

That was when I swore off airplanes altogether. I drove back from Ohio to NJ. :D

NO!!! I love the actual flying, just won't because of all the aiport security crap. I have issues with being treated like a criminal, call me crazy. But that.....omggggggg I can't even imagine!

My town here isn't exactly the boonies, but the next town over (5 mins from here), when I moved there in 96, I was at, (what they refer to as City Hall getting the trash pick up set up since they didn't include it in the water bill), and I asked her if there was a map of the town or anything that told you what all was there. She looked at me and said......well, you said you just came from the water dept 2 doors down, so walking from there to here, you passed the police station. I said....yeah. She said....well, behind you is the post office, the quicky mart, and Henry's diner.....I said....yeah...... She was quiet a moment and said......that's about it. Oh alrighty then. The town hasn't changed at all in 16 years.

Geez, no wonder you don't like planes, Briar!! That's awful! Not sure I'd EVER get on another one. I've always had good luck with planes,, my best friend, and traveling buddy hates to fly,, we always have to get her drunk to get her on the plane when we go to Vegas.. do you know how expensive that is in an airport??? One airport (Toronto, I think) it was $35 for one round of four beers.. we spent half our gambling budget just getting her on the darn plane!!

Y'know, there used to be advantages to living in a small town,, good place to raise your kids without all the city "crap".. not so much anymore. We have a HUGE drug problem for a small town. I work in the hospital and we have TONS of overdoses, suicides.. I wouldn't want to be raising kids these days.. and grateful every day that my own made it out of here without any major problems.

Still, it's sometimes nice not being in all the hub-bub of a city.

I like living in a small town, though it's much different from where I lived when I was younger. And the air is clean. And, where I am, a mile from town, it is sooooo quiet... All you hear is birds, occasional horses, and once in a while farm equipment when the neighbor is clearing the pasture and a very occasional train passing by in the distance.

We don't lock our cars or doors. You can go for a walk in town late at night and not be afraid. And people are friendly and laid back - everyone greets everyone else, most people smile at you (except for teenagers, of course), and you can learn everything about everyone else at the local pharmacy and convenience store. LOL

Now, when I go to the city, I can't stand it. I love going to museums and theater and ballet and such in NYC, but the hostility and indifference on the streets is palpable. It's like I can't breathe.

But, yeah, we have a large drug problem too. If I had children, I don't think I'd want to bring them up here. Most girls get pregnant at 14, and it's more or less considered normal, and education is not a high priority. We do have a very mixed bag of people though. There are some artists and writers, and retired businessmen who decided to "drop out". Unfortunately, the economic trends devastated the town. At one time it was a thriving community, there are some beautiful old-fashioned houses... Now most of them are in bad condition and have been broken up into apartments - poverty is very prevalent.

...

That's awful... I hate to see some of those big ol houses go to disrepair.. I'd love to buy one and bring it back to glory,,, yeah, if money was no object!! The drug problem hit us pretty close to home. Step-daughter is a drug addict,, a bad one. Her kids have been taken away, they now live with hubby's ex and we take them when we can. She's headed for jail,, and soon. Awful drug problems are not only in the cities. I'm HOPING she goes to jail, her choices as far as I can see are jail or dead.

I've been to NYC a couple of times,, loved it! We ran into some friendly folks.. and some bums, and hookers:?: Lots to see and do there. I'm sure we'll go back.

We don't leave ANYTHING unlocked!! Mostly because of step-daughter (she's stolen from us twice and tried to break in twice more) but this town is full of addicts who will do anything.. pretty sad, really.

But I'm sure there's worse places to be!!

Me too. :) Well, I got to do a variation of that. I live in a tiny one room cabin that's on my way-retired parents' property - I rent it from them. When we moved up the hill after the flood (Mom couldn't handle the idea of facing water again), the cabin got completely rebuilt, including some of the studs - simple job, but kinda fun. I got to say what I wanted done and how. Cheap. LOL

It's funny. Most people dream of bigger houses as they get older, it seems, but I'm the opposite. Not that I have much choice, with disability and all, but I love my cabin - it's hard to explain, it's like I live outside, and I'm "wearing" it. :D

That awful, I'm so sorry...

It's fun to visit once in a while, though I haven't been in a couple of years at this point. I used to make the trip pretty regularly when I could drive for two and a half hours and not zonk out from it. But, like I said, it effects me kinda badly now, almost on a spiritual level. I didn't realize, when I lived and worked there, how much tension there is in being there every day, and how much stink. Ack. And there is this attitude of "impersonality", people are just numbers - this is true of any big city I've been to, St.Petersburg, Moscow, Vienna, Rome, NYC, Columbus, etc. It's always the same. People don't look each other in the eye when they pass each other on the street. Only the local neighborhoods, the "bedroom" areas might be different, and that not everywhere. You get some of that in NYC, and in Rome, in poorer areas, men gather on the corners, and drink something-or-other, and hoot at the passing women... LOL But cities have this sense of danger, and excitement, and impersonality, that I just can't handle anymore in large doses.

We don't leave ANYTHING unlocked!! Mostly because of step-daughter (she's stolen from us twice and tried to break in twice more) but this town is full of addicts who will do anything.. pretty sad, really.

Our drug problem is different, I guess, it's mostly painkillers, and no violence from it... It's lots of manual labor around here - farm work, construction, general labor, that sort of thing. And women work at the supermarkets, or at the hospitals in Binghamton. People get hurt, or get bad arthritis, and, thus, lots of painkiller. And teenagers abscond with them. It's a quiet, mellow kind of addiction, and there is no point in breaking in and trying to steal anything, because firstly no-one has anything, and secondly, you can't buy that stuff around here anyway.

But I'm sure there's worse places to be!!

Oh, yes. Like living in a basement apartment half underground, five minutes from OSU campus, when OSU is playing Michigan. OMG! It's like being in a zoo and the animals take over! :D

Ooops. Sorry. I'm writing dissertations here...

Oh no,, no bigger house for me either. Hubby and I completely redid my house when we got married,, it's beautiful and I don't have any desire to live through that kind of construction ever again!!! It was worth it though.. we do nice work! Frankly though, I'd like to sell everything and move somewhere that does NOT have snow!!!

I was born in a small town...

My friend (Chris) lives in a big town...and after this week...he's small town, just like me...

(with apologies to JCM...)

Just an update...back in Texas...next few days will be be gettign everything ready to go...

I brought Chris a pair of black Jockey boxer briefs (to go with mine), and the only snafu, we didn't get our picture done together wearing them (which is good for him, my legs are much nicer than his, he knows this, so he conveniently 'forgot' to mention to me to snap the pic before I left)...everything else going fine...thanks for everyone's support and patience...

Thanks Deb.. it's the ONLY place she's gonna get any help, she's walked out of rehab twice. Court mandated, rehab.. which is stupid because they don't send her to detox first.. can't rehab if you don't detox. Anywho.....

Great to hear things are going well in Texas.. still very anxiously awaiting alpha items :)

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous... Any serious addiction need detox time - heck, even cigarette addition, probably...

But there is always hope. A friend's son got into this kind of a situation. Smart kid, went to Harvard and everything. While there, go hooked on drugs and ended up in jail for a 10 year sentence. Came out clean as a whistle, married his fiance, who had waited for him all that time (amazing dedication nowadays, when even marriage is no assurance of loyalty), and went on quietly with his life. Has a decent career and a son now. Sometimes things work out.

That IS a great success story! Good for him! One can only hope, right? Her mother is already talking about adopting the two little ones, permanently. It seems quite clear that this whole thing isn't going to end nicely for her. Even after everything that's gone on, she still doesn't believe she's going to jail. And won't believe it until she's in an orange jumpsuit cryin through the bars for daddy to come get her out. I understand how bad addiction is (don't we all?) but wouldn't ya think... when someone walks into your house and physically takes your kids away from you,,,, that's you'd be screaming for help?? I guess that's the part that gets me.. she doesn't have a problem in her head, and doesn't know everyone is giving her a hard time... frustrating.
