It's good out of the gate, and it does mature nicely..I'm using the updated original version by the OP

Whipped some of this up using 7.5% Cap VC & 2% TPA DLL. VERY close to GVC, IMO. A bit more flavor too.
IMO, and I repeat..."IMO" this is better than GVC. I'm enjoying it more than I did with GVC. Whether this is your experience or not, its a winner for me.

For anyone thinking of making this, I'd definitely shoot for the revised version with 7.5% Cap VC. This is very flavorful, and any more would make it too much, (again) IMO.

Vanilla Beans work best for a homemade extract, though what you use is really up to you. I've personally been using straight PG for my own and it works pretty well, but there is a "different" flavor to it than what you'd expect from a traditional extract. This is mainly due to PG and it's bitter-like "flavor."
My next batch will be a blend of PGA and PG/VG with my own blend of vanilla beans (and assorted blend of various varieties - not just one specific type). PG & PGA will act as the solvents for extraction while VG will simply thicken it up a bit overall so it doesn't "water down" my liquids' final result.
As far as beans go, the more beans the better the flavor, but they aren't exactly cheap (some average $25+ for 25 or less beans). I'll be going with about 10-15 beans per bottle, on average on this test mix and each bottle will be about 354ml (roughly 12oz). Not the cheapest thing to make if you use a lot of it, but this is more beans than I have been using, so I expect I'll need to use less of it compared to how much I use right now.
50/50 last I recall however, I've found it better to use 60/40 PG/VG since the PG carries the flavoring better than VG does. In most cases, with higher VG, you have to "make up" for the loss of flavor as VG mutes flavors. with a 60/40 blend, it needs to steep for at least 24 hours before you vape it because it comes off extremely chemically. I left the cap off for 24 hours after shaking for about 60 seconds and it's not bad at all (this using 14% instead of 15% for the custard flavor).
That said, I don't much care for DDL, even after it steeps/ages, so I use whatever caramel I have in my box. I have various caramels from TPA, FA and OneOnOne Flavors that I use for my mixes. I've not finalized my own blend, but I'm not too far from it.
It needs some steeping/aging. After about 7-10 days, the overpowering taste of DDL dies off, but it's still there. I don't much care for DDL in this mix, but it can work for others, in lower percentages.
Im still digging the 15/2% version.

I've been experimenting with various Vanilla Custard flavors and recipes for at least three months now. While my first dozen or so recipes centered around Capella's, a friend gave me some Flavor West Vanilla Custard to try. All I can say is I have about 2 oz left of Capella's and will probably never use it again! IMO the Flavor West is much better. Here is a simple recipe for those willing to give it a spin.
18% FW Vanilla Custard (Sounds high, I know. just trust me on this)
1% EM
1% FA Vienna Cream (I add this flavor to almost everything. It adds a little sweet creaminess.)
That's it! Let it steep a couple of days and enjoy. For something even better, add 2.5% FA Cookie to the mix.

Thanks Tactical. So I made another batch today using the original recipe of 15%/2% with 50/50 PG/VG. I figured my last batch of 7.5%/2% was very mild (even if it was mostly VG), I might as well increase the flavor and see what happens. If it's too much flavor, I can always add more base mix to it. I will let this sit for a week before tasting... I hope it tastes as good as people here says it is.

I did a little digging to see what I could find on Capella's Vanilla Custard and managed to pull this from another forum. Apparently Tom, from Capella's, sent a sample of their Vanilla Custard to a lab to have it tested and analyzed due to the questions from the vaping community regarding Diacetyl's presence (the company is ABC - Advanced Botanical Consulting).
The guy that posted it mentioned speaking to a chemist that worked on energy drinks to see if the report was anything to be concerned about, given the result was < .4% and he said that from speaking to him, those are the tolerances that chemists work in and that result indicates that Diacetyl is not present, otherwise it'd show > .4% with the < or > being the key indicator.
I've attached a screenshot of the report below to confirm this. That said, I'm not a chemist, nor do I claim to be one. Just as the above is second-hand info, so is this and the information above. Take it for what it's worth and make your own decisions as to whether you want to use it or not. Personally, I've felt no ill effects, but that doesn't mean there's none. I do, however, feel that I'm exposed to far worse walking outdoors than I do adding a % to my e-liquid.
