BTW, my offer still stands -- if anyone would rather send a fax to your congressmembers, I volunteer to fax them on your behalf, for free. PM me with your email address and I'll give you the addy to send your letter to. Word docs are fine.

Terrific letter. If people keep up with testimonials like this, how can they refuse us.

Thanks, Jim

It might be long, but this is what I sent:

To whom it may concern,

My name is Name Name, and I live in Location, Location. As I
understand, FDA is currently investigating so called "electronic
cigarette", and I wanted to share my experience.

I've been a steady smoker for almost 25 years. My recent average was
just above one pack but ranged between one to three packs of
cigarettes a day. I tried different methods of quitting in the past,
including using FDA approved gum and patch nicotine substitutes, but I
guess I was one of the 95% of smokers that this therapy is not
effective for. I pretty much gave up on the idea, and simply ignored
the problem, hoping that a miracle would happen in the future.

Recent smoking bans extensions that are happening all around the world
made me start looking for the smoking alternative that would not cause
second hand effects and that I would be able to use without causing
harm to the others. In my search, I stumbled upon Electronic
Cigarette. Soon as I bought the starter kit, I noticed that I am not
really using it only in areas where I was concerned about the others,
rather using it all the time. My regular cigarette usage dropped
rapidly, to 0 after only 5 days, and without any commitment, plan or
even idea that this might happen. I discussed my experience with my
peer smoker group and many of them are giving it a try. Most of them
are succeeding. In online discussion, I even got a name for my
experience - "accidental quitter". Doesn't this sound like a miracle,
especially since we're talking about an addiction that is hard to
break with immense commitment even when visible health problems are
present - just try strolling in front of the cancer treatment center
at a local hospital.

I do understand that I am still inhaling nicotine and that it might as
well have some very bad effects on my health, but since I am not
inhaling anything that I wouldn't inhale from regular cigarettes that
are fully available on the market, pure logic suggest that this at
least might be better for my health. Knowing that cigarette smoke
contains dozens of known cancerogens, I have to conclude that this way
of nicotine intake has to be safer then a proven deadly alternative.
Finally, my general health situation improved considerably since I
switched to electronic cigarettes. I can walk up the stairs without
loosing breath, sleep much better, acid reflux disappeared and I
finally got the motivation to start exercising.

Knowing that regular cigarettes are on the market today, and there is
a little chance that they will be banned, if electronic cigarettes are
removed from the market, it will be extremely hard for me not to
switch back. I do understand that studies are needed to prove if
electronic cigarette is effective as NRT, and the fact that "it works
for me and my friends" can't stand scientific review. The general
"safeness" of the electronic cigarette also needs peer reviewed
studies to be establish, and the fact that it helps me doesn't mean a
thing. However, regular cigarettes are proven to be dangerous and
unsafe, but are still on the market.

I would only like to ask that when you consider electronic cigarette,
to compare it with the regular cigarettes, rather than pharmaceutical
grade smoking cessation products, and leave it on the market until
such studies are done. We should use proper child safe containers to
distribute and store components, and allow sale only to adults, which
is what most distributors are doing anyway. Further more, starting
price for electronic cigarettes is much higher than for the regular
tobacco, which makes it quite prohibitive for teens that are likely to
try to circumvent the rules.

Thanks for reading my message, I hope you'll do the right thing and
save me from the cancer sticks.

Hi all, my partner has spoken with Jan Cummings of the FDA. even though she (Ms Cummings) does not have to do with the decision making she requested that emails be sent to the following email address and she will then forward them to the FDA dicision makers. Now that we know we have a sympathizer within the FDA, we need to make sure to send all the emails she could ever want or need. Ms. Cummings needs as many emails as soon as possible. She would like for the subject line to say "Electronic Cigarette" then a well thought out email stating our side of why e-cigs should not be banned. Thank you for taking the time to consider sending the email, Kat
Please send emails to reglist@cdrh.fda.gov and remember the subject line needs to say only "electronic cigarettes"

I emailed her. It's good to hear someone in the FDA is even the slightest bit rational. Then, of course such a person wouldn't be a decision maker. 5/5 stars for Jan Cummings in my book.

This is an email I sent to all my friends and family. I'm hoping they will send an email also.

As many of you know, I have been able to stop smoking after 36 years with the help of the electronic cigarette. Tomorrow is my 8 week anniversary which is a tremendous feat in itself for those of you who know me. I belong to an electronic forum which is a group of people dedicated to helping others get acquainted with vaping also help them to quit smoking. We also are working hard to help change legislation aimed to ban our ecigs. Many have been able to quit smoking because of the ecig. Right now the FDA is considering banning this device for a list of reasons I won't bore you with, just like they tried to ban Cheerios recently because of what they put on the box.

I don't usually ask you guys for anything, but if you could take a few minutes of your time and send an email to the address listed below and ask that this device not be banned it just might help our cause. If you don't want to get involved I will truly understand. But I would appreciate your help on this. This device is much safer and healthier than real cigarettes. You are not ingesting any tar and carcinogens that are found in real cigs. Please read the following paragraph and just follow the instructions.

Thank you,

I then added the first paragraph of the OP.

A few more people have helped, but let's get MORE.
I really believe if we could get an impressive amount of emails to them it might make a difference. And if we don't at least try then we have no business to pi** and moan when we can no longer buy and use e-cigs. Thanks so much to everyone that is helping.

Okay, sending mine now.

Edit: here's the letter I sent:

Thank you for taking the time to read this email. It has come to my attention that there is some talk of banning the electronic cigarette within the FDA, and I would like to express my extreme concern with this measure.

I have only just learned about these devices, purchased my first model about a week ago, and have not had a cigarette since that day. This is incredible for me, a smoker for over 15 years. I understand that electronic cigarettes are not true smoking cessation devices, but rather are considered a nicotine replacement, but it just worked out that way for me. I have tried patches, gum, and "going cold turkey" more times than I can count, all to no avail. I had resigned myself to dying from an addiction that I simply could not seem to overcome. While I am still using nicotine in the form of "e-cigarettes", I am now avoiding the multitude of known carcinogens contained in regular cigarettes and I look and feel healthier.

While I agree that this new technology must be tested, I would ask that it not be banned while the process is ongoing. Too many people depend on this product to keep them from going back to cigarettes.

Thank you again for your time,

I just sent mine.
My story is like most others. Tried it all, couldn't quit. I did add that I never started up because of the ads or candy flavors but because they made me feel like an adult.
I basically ended it with "I have the legal right to smoke tobacco, now I ask that you provide me the right to not smoke and to use a safer alternative instead."
