Well, I just wrote Ms. Cummings (reglist@cdrh.fda.gov) on the matter:
Dear Ms. Jan Cummings,
I am writing you in response to a post at e-cigarette-forum.com, which stated that you had invited emails regarding e-cigs be sent to you.
I was a two-pack/day smoker for 22 years, and all my attempts to quit ended up with me smoking again. It's not just that nicotine is addictive, but it was the social and tactile aspects of smoking which appealed to me. I simply enjoyed inhaling and exhaling the smoke, as well as the subtle effects of nicotine. Truth is, I simply didn't WANT to quit, no matter the cost to my long-term health. Crazy, I know... but true for me and for millions of other smokers.
The day I acquired my first e-cig, I went from 40 cigarettes a day to 5, then only 2-3... and when my supply of "analog" cigarettes ran out, I didn't bother replenishing, I became an ex-smoker who "vaped".
My energy has dramatically improved, my lungs are clearing, my house no longer stinks of ashtrays and stale smoke... and my wife (who detested my habit but tolerated it, God bless her) is delighted with the faint, pleasant aromas of the wild cherry e-juice I like to vape. All aspects of my life have been improving since I began vaping with e-cigs, and in my mind it would be a criminal act by the government to ban these amazing devices.
We understand that better studies are required and desirable, but a ban on e-cigs or e-juice would send thousands of us ex-smokers who managed to quit the smoking habit via e-cigs back to the terrible habit of smoking. It would also obviously deny millions of other smokers the alternative of vaping their nicotine, which if allowed could help improve their lives and health as well.
Anecdotal evidence is mounting daily of how e-cigs DO facilitate healthier lifestyles, oftentimes leading to complete smoking cessation, for thousands of Americans. And many knowledgeable voices are rising across the world (doctors, tobacco specialists, etc) using available data and evidence to come out in support of e-cigs.
I encourage you to do what you can to help the powers-that-be at the FDA to:
1. Initiate proper studies of e-cigs and the entire "vaping" alternative
2. Leave e-cigs and e-juice on the market pending full FDA approval.
I thank you for your time and energy in this matter.
