A lot of the complaints are around the placement and size of the air flow holes, too. But, seeing as how the heads are THE most important part of the ProTank, and if the quality of them has gone in the toilet, holding off from recommending them is probably a good idea, if and until the quality resumes, or the buyer is willing to rebuild them to work right, or drill the body to improve airflow.

Also, you're in the same boat I might be in - our gear is older - most of the complaints are regarding newly bought gear. It could also be that clones are being sold as authentic Kangers - which is another reason to warn people if they buy them.

I absolutely love my Pro Tank 2 and P/T mini..now

When I first got them it was like sucking a golf ball through a 50' garden hose to get a hit. The three vent holes are only 1/64. I opened them to 1/16 (to just barely touch the threads) now its like breathing in air with tons of flavor and vapor...also I dont get that burnt taste any more while vaping no matter how much I toke on it.

As far as the coils go, my local B&M shop taught me how to rebuild them and a little trick to help,

use #32 wire to make the coil, use a #4 finishing nail to wrap your wire around, put the first wick under the coil rather than through the coil as they come from the manufacturer, place the second wick on top of the coil (just like out the package). Where the opening is inside the glass where the juice flows onto the wick put a small piece of wick in there...1 side (see picks)

Well 21 pages about what GrimmGreen thinks, wow. You guys need to watch his AGA T3 video the guy gave up and gave it away in the video. What he says never really matters no one takes him seriously anyway, he's been vaping for 5 years and still struggles with things I see new vapers do at 1-2 months. Protanks are here to stay folks don't listen to him.

I just watched that video this morning before work. I'm sure someone will like getting that free T3.

Although I would have rather seen him hold off on the video until he figured out what was going wrong with his coil build. Then, come back with the "complete" video showing what he did wrong initially and what was done to correct the situation.

But it is what it is. I understand where he's coming from, and he's right in line with the "Average Joe" vaper in that many people give up on devices after trying their best a few times.

My third rebuildable atomizer (after the RSST and the Scar) was the AGI. It was a challenge (for me) to get it set up and vaping.

I also bought an AIOS clone. That one kicked my .... to the point where I just used it as a dripper for a week or two until I calmed down enough to give it another shot in tank mode. It's still not performing as well as I believe it can, and I'll be tearing back into it when I get another day to sit around and play with it.

Some people don't have that kind of patience, and I understand that.

Yeah. Just a blanket statement about not buying protanks because he's gotten lots of complaints, with no leg work. Then following the statement talks about how some people just break things and gives an example. I like GG, but that statement wasn't really thought out to well.

Since the stock coils on ProTanks are so hit-and-miss, I never even use them; I immediately remove the stock wick and coil and rebuild with a cotton microcoil ... nothing wrong with the ProTanks that a good rebuild can't fix! I actually prefer the original ProTanks. I have four of them in rotation, all with CMCs in them, and they vape great all the way to the end of the tank. :D

Yeah but the older Kanger coils were not like the most recent batches ... I've never had a "bad" Kanger coil before, and the 1.8 ohm coils that I used to buy were awesome. Since I basically stopped using PT's (aside from the occasional play on a mini), I am grateful that I don't have to deal with the problems of the newer batches. I actually have an unopened pack of Kanger coils that I've had since last October, makes me feel like I have a little pot of gold sitting in a box. :p

It really ticked me off when EVOD heads were replaced with ProTank ones... AND with NO warning.

That's when I bought 25 replacement EVOD (smaller id post) coils that I still have.
I just reuse my 12 smaller id posts so haven't used any of the replacements yet.
I have no problems with them in my EVODs, PT I & II & Vision Victory 5ml.
They get gurgly I swap em, soak em, dry burn & replace the flavor wicks.
I've been reusing the same 12 small posts since May :)

Gotta have backups for my backups' backups.

LMAO I bought the PT1 BECAUSE I never managed to get a decent vape out of my 3 vivi nova tanks without massive leaking. 3 vivis in the vapocalypse box now.

:toast:

2 full size Vivis, 2 mini Vivis, an iClear 30, an iClear30s, an RSST, an Igo-L & 12 Joyetech 510s

All basically useless because I have 12 EVOD coils in rotation & 40 unused replacement coils (EVOD & PT).

I'm not paying $2-$3/coil for stuff I don't use :glare:

Did you even bother to listen to him? He attacked all of the tank systems with replaceable coil heads as being inconsistent, not just the PT.

It would be easy to get insulting to people who misrepresent the facts.

The problem probably has nothing to do with Kanger or any of the other tank systems, but the tsunami of clones and clones of clones on the marketplace.

I have compared original Kanger's to clones and cannot tell the difference, and I have spent a good chunk of my professional life in dealing with ultra precision machinery and measurement, even though I started out as a Chemical Engineer. That part of my career did not last long because the company though I would be better in lasers and optics.

Go to the Fasttech site or Alibaba, and you will find the same products with the same name being offered by different sources.

My gut feeling is that the ecig market world wide is a lot bigger than the current estimates, or else why bother to clone a $10 device and sell it for half the price unless you had the volumes to justify it? Fasttech carries some 6,000 items on their online catalog.

3 years ago, it would have been a stretch to find an online vendor with 60

Yep. They estimate 40,625 people switch to vaping in the UK per month. That's a lot of gear.

My wife has been running protanks on her provari for months now and hasn't had any connection issues nor pin problems. She be sure to tell me if there was.
Some little useless piece of tidbit I have figured out is that some bases work fine on some PV's and some don't perform all the well. I have a bunch of bases and mix and match untill I get one that works good with that perticular PV.. I make sure my wifes protank2's base doesn't get lost in the shuffle and always receives that perticular base and so far its been working flawlessly. A protank base on a PTmini looks a bit funny or the other way around but they all interchange, I have a sigelei puritank and the protank base fits it just fine but a tad smaller and I assume the davide is the same way but I don't own one of those yet.
I also say that probably what Bosun already knows if that those opaque silicone insulators is a major issue in blocking airflow and I use those heads as a last resort if I run out of rebuilding supplies.

I use replacement PT II style bases on my original Protanks

EDIT - Whoops. I see those are sold out now. I got mine back in October.

I keep reading over and over in this thread that clearomisers with replaceable coil/wick heads such as the ProTanks are normally purchased by people new to vaping ... I don't really believe that.

There are more people than you think out there that are not members of ECF, but have been vaping for quite a long time. To many of these people, vaping is not a 'hobby', but just a way to keep off cigarettes. I am betting that the majority of these people have no intent to sit down and re-coil and re-wick a rebuildable atomizer ... so, what do they buy? ... mostly clearomizers that have user replaceable heads (ProTank, T3, etc).

For me, I would like to buy an RBA, but with my old eyes, I would need to get a big magnifying glass just to properly wind the coils. It's just easier to throw the non-working AeroTank atomizer head in the trash when it stops working and then screw in a new one.

Again, I am thinking that the majority of the worlds vapers out there are not dedicated ECF members, nor do they consider this a 'hobby', nor do they want to sit down and make there own coils.

Just my opinion ...

Mr. Sim - Congratulations on 2 weeks off the cancersticks!

I go to a vape meet or two every month.
Some of the longtime vapers use Evods and/or Protanks for daily drivers.
Some rebuild their coils and some don't.
Some of them are serious hobbyists/collectors.

I use Evods 49/50 times and Protank or PT II the other.

OTOH I'm expecting a Kayfun 3.1 clone in the mail tomorrow :)

get your magnifying glass anyway. it'll help put the coils in post holes easily. however, you shouldn't need it for coiling. just get a gizmo deluxe coiling jig. check out this vid by our own super_x_drifter... Micro Coil 101 - Making A Perfect Micro Coil Using The Coil Gizmo By Artistic Wire - YouTube

you'll likely be making perfect coils almost immediately. it's so easy even i can do it.

as far as taking the word of grimmgreen goes, the title of this vid says it all...

i have an ego. it was given to me. i keep trying to convince myself to PIF to someone, but get to feeling guilty that i'm going to do that to someone consciously. maybe i'll hook someone up who's not a good friend or family one day.

i also think it's hilarious (and quite irritating) to hear him talk electronics. "ma"? what the expletive is that? it's M.A.H., man! say the damn letters, they mean something. there may be a "ma" in the kitchen pouring you some cheerios, but there isn't any "ma" in electronics jargon, stats or specifications. it's 3 letters pronounced that stand for milli-amp-hour. say them...

i think he means well. also think he's a decent honest person just trying to make it in this world. but meh...

That video is from June 2012. Ego batteries were set voltage before twists.
It was a game changer at that time.
It's a silly way to say it but watch other reviewers' vids from around 6/12

You say "M. A. H." every time?
I go to vape meets every month and I don't think I've ever heard anyone spell it out.

Now, it's a good video for noobs. Be fair.

I have a ProTank 2 and while I like it, it's definitely fiddly. Mind you, I don't know if it's the way I draw on the devices or what but I have little to no luck with any form of clearomizer (top or bottom, EVOD, Stardust, T3, etc) The most common thing for me is either a gurgly or dry hit. (yes, I get both from time to time) Fortunately, I do not mind messing with things. I like rebuilding the heads/etc, even though it can be frustrating. You just have to take the time to find what works for you. What works for 50 people may not work for 100. It doesn't mean anything. Just that it's not the product for you. (or is) I have found that using 32 guage kanthal is what gives me the best results and wrapping at a higher resistance. (2.5 and up) Any lower and I personally get gurgling or dry hits. (no matter what I set my device to voltage wise) I don't know why. Don't really care. It's just what works. I also visually have noticed how much "wick" i need. I used to use cotton, which was the best flavor wise but I can no longer do that as it bothers me. (headaches, chest pains... something in the cotton that doesn't like me) So I've gone back to Silica but do something to it that gives it a cotton like texture/consistency which helps with the wicking issues I had with the actual silica wicks
(Oh... and I had a leaking issue that no matter what I did, it wouldn't go away. I got the air flow controller attachment and that fixed the leaking and I like the AIR control functionality)
Anyway... I actually like GrimmGreen and PBusardo. With any reviewer type person, you're not always going to agree with them or have the same results. They are just giving their opinion, their experience and the experiences of the fans that have given them feedback. After getting message upon message of a product that numerous people are having issues with, would you really recommend that to a new user? A new user that is most likely going to be discouraged and possibly give up on vaping before they even start? I'm sorry but most users do not want to tinker with their stuff. Many do, but not most.
