This is the evolve beta case with some very minor changes and a hana logo with a 200 dollar pricetag. Definitely going to pass on this.

Wait, is it possible to buy a ready-assembled mod made from the beta case, without the minor changes and the hana logo for a much better price than $200? If so, please point me in that direction :thumb:
Otherwise, all I see is a smaller, sleeker and more affordable dna 200 mod than the Opus.

Well not so much buy, Yet. You can make a replica of the beta box for far less than 200.00
There are 3D printed enclosures on Shapeways, the batteries and the chips are readily available to :)
There actually quite easy to build only 4 wires to solder :)

There's that.

Or Make the buttons square....

Eric

Square buttons bring along a set of problems with buttons sticking from continual motion on the same axis. This is eliminated with round buttons that are able to rotate and distribute the ware equally.

If you don't like the labels at odd angles you should see if Hana can provide you with unlabeled buttons. But IMHO the fact that they rotate is not an indicator of a poor design.

Soulseek,

I will say one thing about that Beta Box by Evolv I would love to get my hands on one. I refuse to use those plastic 3d printed clones of that box. That said you might contact Evolv and ask them if you could purchase one. They may say no because the are so He!! bent on being a board manufacturer only and not being in competition with folks like Hana.

As far as the Opus have you seen the insides of that beast. The internal side of the movable 510 pin presses right up against the LiPo and I could well see that punching a hole in the LiPO. and everything else is held in place with rolled up piece of foam rubber.

As far as Hana copying the Evolv Beat Box I consider that a smart move. and if one looks around you can find an internal view of it also and believe me it is a much cleaner and nicer looking build.

Soulseek, I am not picking on you just saying.

By the way much cheaper if you could get the Evolv Beta Box I am not sure. The 3D printed box is $50, the chip set is $80 the battery is $25 and a Fat Daddy well I don't know the price on that but lets say $20. So what would you really save $25 bucks if you are lucky.

In the olden times of wrought iron you might be able to build at home cheaper but in this era not so much. :2c:

While not a direct indicator of poor design it is a sign of lack of attention to details.

The price indicates high end so I think that it is fair to nitpick a bit.

Yes they are free floating intermediate buttons and the fact that they can rotate is not an indication of poor quality. In fact many manufacturers advertise free rotating buttons as a feature to prevent the button holes from becoming elongated and causing buttons to stick. One company in particular that comes to mind is ProVape and not many put Provape in the "Poor Quality" bracket.

I also noticed that the back cover Philips head screws are not all aligned is that a design deficiet also? If you don't like it OK but to call it poor quality is a stretch.

And no I am not a Fanboy, of Evolv or Hana but Holy Cow consider what the buttons extensions are. They are just free floating metal inserts. If you want them aligned take your finger and twist them to suit your idea of perfection.
And now you show me where I said poor quality [emoji6]

The price wasnt the concern. More of the lazyness and half assed approach. Not what i would expect from Hana. Usually they come up with their own design like the other manufacturers are.

From what i gather the only thing keeping Evolv from releasing the DIY box kits they wanted to offer is they can't find anyone to run the mills to make them, ie the 'Come work for Evolv' thread on the early adopters forum.

First person to market with a reasonably priced good quality metal 200 case is gonna sell a crap-ton of them.

On Hana modz Facebook page they listed these as the pre production models. Let's wait and see what changes when the official release comes out. Currently they are not serialized, and the buttons can spin freely so you can adjust them if your ocd.

In evolvs forum Brandon said they plan to release the beta case in a diy kit in a raw aluminum finish.

I was planning on assembling a 3d printed box but like someone else said, they aren't much cheaper than 200$ unless you already have the other parts or want to use a Hammond box.

I didn't know they wanted to sell the Beta Box as a kit. I agree they would sell a ton of them if they kept the price down. You know that Brandon owns Opus and they have been out of stock for sometime now.

The whole Evolv, Opus business model eludes me. Now that you bring up the fact that they wanted to sell the Beta Box as a kit is just frosting on the confusion. If they want to be board manufacturers and not in competition with their customers the "Mod Houses" making and selling the Opus 200, a Beta Box Kit would seem to be a paradox with what I heard (or thought I heard) during Brandon's interview with Busardo.

That said the Hana Modz V200 is the Beta Box with round buttons instead of square buttons.

People keep saying this, but Brandon directly addressed it on the early adopter forums.

According to him, EVOLV/Brandon is in no way currently affiliated with Opus, the guy who owns Opus was a friend of Brandons and he loaned him the money to start Opus, the guy has since paid back Brandon and he has no interest/equity in Opus whatsoever.

He also stated the only reason Opus had units ready to go was they are located so close and Opus happen to have a case that could be easily modified/had the correct specs to hold a DNA200/battery, so he got an initial head-start.

I assume he's telling the truth but that's for each to decide on their own.

*EDIT* Found the actual quote from Brandon:

Opus is not a daughter manufacturer of Evolv. The owner of Opus (Roger) used to do some contract assembly work for us when we were still manufacturing the Darwin. After we retired the Darwin he wanted to start his own mod company. I lent him the money to start the business and helped him incorporate. He paid me back in full, a year later and I ceased having any interest in Opus. Opus is fully owned by Roger and has no ties to me or Evolv.

xtwosm0kesx,

Hmmm... I can't argue his ownership and I can't even remember where I saw it but someone posted a Public LLC form for Opus and Brandon was the person that held the LLC on Opus.

So without being able to recall where I saw that document I would even begin to debate his claims. I didn't know that Evolv planned to sell the Beta Box as a kit but that would be a similar situation to selling pre-made Mods I mean a Beta Box Mod kit requires four wires to be soldered and four screws to hold the back cover on. Not much of a kit. Heck go buy one of those kids toys at Walmart the claim "Some assembly required" and you may be at that task for three days.

I edited my above post with the actual quote from Brandon/the EA forum, so again, take from that what you will.

I guess (from posts on EA forum and Info from Beta testers) they are going to sell "parts" that are essentially the "kits", i assume by keeping it a DIY thing (and not selling a fully assembled retail mod) it somehow insulates them from lawsuits that would arise some device failure/stupidity (re: Puresmoker for example).

Still holding out hope that MikePetro comes across an affordable machinist and might get a coop going for some aluminum enclosures too.

All a person needs is that metal box. The rest can be had almost anywhere. The plastic 3d box is OK but that metal box would make anyones homebrew look professional.

Even if the box isn't anodized the sell some cold blueing for guns that would make it look pretty nice.

retird,

I don't care if he owns it or not but this is pretty incriminating:

http://www2.sos.state.oh.us/pls/bsqry/f?p=100:7:0::NO:7:P7_CHARTER_NUM:2100921

xtwo... explained it very well...yes we saw that in this thread a long time ago...Brandon set the record straight.

While I'm posting I might just say I hope a reference case kit becomes available and hope it includes the special designed 510 connector that is in the reference device. Very, very great 510 connector.

HolmanGT, surely you will have another shot at grabbing the device of your choice.

Just a bit of info from the Early Adopters forum concerning the reference (beta) kits:

"Incidentally for the beta we did make a custom510connector because we found some 510s had abominable resistance stability (also, 200W sustained is too much for many)."

"As for making and selling reference cases, that is the plan but I have no idea when those will be available. They will be tumbled raw aluminum cases like the betas. They'll include the buttons and the reference510 connector."
