Hi Fellow Vapers,

I went on vacation and see a hardware store and decided to try this Stainless Steel Wire

Rope/Cable as a wick. I took my trusty Drummel tool and cut two one inch pieces with the cut off wheel.

I rolled them in a very small thin piece of ko gen do magic japaneeze cotton.

Screwed them down into the coils on my RSST pyrex dual coil atomizer--which I received as a gift.

It works really well and cables never turn brown--they just stay shiny.

first pic is of cable in my hand---second pic is the cable inside of the tank----third pic is the build deck of

the RSST pyrex dual coil atomizer.

This set up is a set and forget and feels like I should be rewicking but don't have to touch them.

coils seem to stay shiny and clean too-----strange......

Hey, @thetrucker, lots of us were running SS cable wicks in Gennie tanks a while ago.

Please be advised that most of the SS cable sold at hardware stores is Galvanized and not fit for vaping. I've also read that some of the SS cable has a pretty good amount of lead in it.

Not trying to be a fearmonger, just letting you know.

The manufacturers of this cabling never intended for this product to be used for this purpose, so it shouldn't be too surprising.

@Underwhelmed --------------thx for the info I did not understand-----I thought there was Stainless Steel Cable-------and then-------Galvanized Cable

But don't want to be inhaling LEAD at all.

The cable is not mean't to be used in Vaping----probably not a good Idea...........

you can twist your own cable using some of your own kanthal for a similar effect; maybe make use of left over clippings from coil making; that way you know you are just using the same materials the coil was made from anyway.

If you check the labels on the rolls of bulk SS cable, they usually say that they have been Galvanized and some have the California lead warning verbiage as well.

Sounds like a good idea to me to pull this stuff out and make a wick using ---SOMETHING ELSE-----hahahhah---------Lead Poisoning does not sound like fun at all.

thanks for the info folks-----good thing we got ECF to refer to.

This is a very good idea to twist a cable out of Kanthal and then you could be sure of no lead.-----thanks ........

also found this from ------"Avid vapors"--------->this is 316 View attachment 481734
That should be alright to use, Avid Vapors is a reputable vendor.

Like I said, I read a post about the possibility of lead and that was enough for me. SS cable is super easy to maintain and it wicks well enough but around the same time the Kayfun clones started rolling out with good reviews, so I bought one, learned how to build it and was instantly hooked and never went back to the Genesis type atty afterwards.

It is super easy. Grab two strands of your favorite diameter wire (two strands of 28-30 gauge works for most attys), chuck them into a drill and, while holding the other ends with a pair of pliers, slowly turn the drill until you are satisfied with the twist. You will get a lot denser vapor and better flavor out of a twisted coil.

Not the same application.

As far as TC, they can tell you if the SS is Galvanized or not. Mine does carry some clean SS cable as well as my USP PG.
Gotta save where one can.;)

why would a manufacturer go thru the trouble of galvanizing SS cable? its already rust resistant ( btw galvanize is zinc, not lead)
a good way to check for galvanized wire rope is to take a portion, blue flame it till its cherry red and then quench it in vinegar, let it dry and then dip it in water and see if it rusts within a couple of hours.. if rust forms, then its a low quality SS. If no rust appears, then you have the SS you need....
also, lead melts at 700+F... dont think you will get any lead vapor before then and your juice would be turning into aldehydes way before that temp....

Back in my genisis building days, I used ss cable, occasionally. I have bought and used ss cable from Ace Hardware, with no problems. Ace sells both ss and galvanized cable, and they are clearly labeled as such, on the spool. Regardless, ss and galvanized don't really look alike. Ss cable will be shiny. Galvanized cable will be more dull silver. If you still have doubts, take a piece and heat it with a torch. Ss will become red, but when cooled, will have no ash or residue. Galvanized will smoke, and when cool, will leave a yellowish white, powdery ash. Do not inhale the smoke, it is zinc oxide, and is toxic. When buying the ss cable, the spool should also be labeled with the type of ss used. It will probably be either 304 or 316, neither of which will contain any lead.
