Has anyone found they can't taste just certain juices?

I'm trying to figure out what is going on, and I have ruled out vaper's tongue/fatigue and dehydration. I've tried a small fortune of "premium" juices so far and tend to be pretty picky. I find I like sweeter, dessert flavors. But tonight I've hit yet 2 more juices in my stash that have NO taste or flavor. I just taste a thickness from the VG. My sister enjoyed the first two when I gave them to her and said they tasted great. She picked right up on the flavor profile. My SO doesn't vape, but tried the last two just now and picks up the actual flavors fine, too. So it IS just me. The "offenders" so far are...

Moo Milk Vanilla Almond Milk - Vanilla, Almond Milk (pretty obvious!)
Cuttwood Sugar Drizzle - Cinnamon Cereal, Milk, Cream
Bad Drip Ugly Butter - Cinnamon, Donut, Banana Pudding
SVRF Tempting - Blueberry, Churro, and Dessert

Aside from the Vanilla Almond, the only common denominator I can come up with is cinnamon. Based on descriptions and reviews, all 4 of these should be flavors I LOVE. But I tasted none of the yumminess, including the cinnamon.

I do typically rotate three main juices - coconut, chocolate, and fried sponge cake, if that matters. Am I destined to only taste super sweet, sugary juices? I really want to get some coconut, banana, almond, and vanilla custard from The Sauce LA while it's on sale, but I'm afraid I won't taste those, either.

By the way, I can't taste them on my finger, from a pod device, or by adjusting wattage and air flow on my Triton tank. All juices are only 3mg, so it shouldn't be nicotine overwhelming it.

Does anyone have any insight or suggestions? I'm kind of at a loss...

Thanks!

It's my understanding that your sense of taste dulls as we get up there in age. Which really pisses me off. I know that many light flavored juices I can barely, and I mean Barely taste. I'm not looking for knock your socks off strength, but I tend toward full flavored juice myself. I've tried plenty of juices which people raved about, and that I found weak and underwhelming. But that's just me. I could just be a wierd old coot....wait, I am!

No; I think your "lack of tasting" is legit. I DIY my own e-liquid, and I regularly (not often; but regularly) read of individuals that are "flavor blind" to particular flavors. Strawberry is the one that come to mind; though it is not the only one. I can't say I have heard of cinnamon being one before; but that means absolutely nothing.:D

I also believe, though I have zero scientific proof to back it up, that certain behavior can affect how well we taste. Smoking (even occasionally), lots of garlic and/or onion, greasy fried food, alcohol, even personal oral hygiene, all can influence our sensitivity to taste perception.

Even the very act of vaping lots of strong flavors, for long periods of time, can overwhelm our taste buds and seem to shut them down. Often this is referred to as vaper's tongue. Ease up on the vaping. Switch to lighter flavors for a while. Some will even vape unflavored, to give their taste buds a rest, while keeping up their nic fix. Some find help by rinsing with lemon water; others say a good tongue brushing helps. Whatever you can do to "rest" your taste buds, and give them a chance to reset, is not going to hurt.

I have also read, and believe, that "sweet" is one of the easiest flavors to taste. This is why commercial e-liquid manufacturers make so many sweet recipes. Even the new ex-smoker is going to be able to taste it.

Another thing that affects taste is smell. If you have a cold, allergies, or anything else that is limiting your sense of smell, that could be hindering your ability to taste as well.

I quit for 6 years, then picked it back up for about a year. I was smoking "ultra lights" - only about 6-8 per day, but enough that I wanted it to end for good this time. So I've been completely smoke free since October 13 of this past year. My taste buds seem fine when it comes to foods and beverages, so I'm stumped. And I do like cinnamon and taste it just fine in other things!

Maybe some of my taste buds haven't recovered yet? I'm not even sure that's a real thing...

As a test, I did mix a little banana custard into the vanilla almond milk to try to spruce it up, but all I got was banana. My sister will love that she's saving so much through my trial and "failure"!

I have had similar experiences and I mainly vape vanilla profiles. I was not dehydrated and assumed it was vapor fatigue. Not sure. Even with regular cigs - sometimes I could not taste them. Drives me crazy. What I do is swig some lemon juice straight out of the bottle. That usually helps me. It is frustrating whatever it is. I occasionally drink root beer - beer (craft beer) and I purchased some only yesterday, opened one and was totally disappointed - could not taste a thing. Asked someone else to taste it and they thought it was delicious.

I have noticed that sometimes when I spray the yard with pesticide that I cannot taste my vape so maybe if you were using any chemicals that could be the cause.

I know it's frustrating and hope it resolves itself soon.

It's possible that some flavors are overwhelming others, that certain parts of your tongue and mouth haven't fully recovered yet, some "tastes" are really tasted on certain parts of the tongue or simply that the juice doesn't play well with your palate. I have been DIY for a while now, and commercial flavors often taste oversweetened to me now that I've been doing this for a while. It's possible that your tongue isn't "sensitive" yet for certain flavors, but they may work down the line.

I'm sure it's frustrating that you aren't "tasting" some juices, good oral hygiene (including maybe a tongue scraper to keep your tastebuds clean, fresh (you will scape off some of the dead ones, and new ones should grow back more quickly) and maybe giving things some time. Vaping unflavored may actually help as well... .If you are continuously only using sweet, desert flavors it could be that this is what your tongue got "used" to tasting, so maybe try a few days of clearing your palate completely may send you back to some juices with an improved ability to "taste" them.

I have to admit, I have tasted some bad juices and I have gotten some "bad" flavors, but not usually things I don't taste at all, but everyone is different. Best of luck I got my vaper's tongue out of the way early, and I rotate flavors so I can continue to taste things, I like tasting things. Etc.

Best of luck,

Anna

Purlium butter mint wakes up my taste buds. I don't like mints and can tolerate, even enjoy, this one. My rotation is very fruit dominated and the flavors occasionally taste too similar, few hits of the mint remedies this.
I actually considered getting a peppermint just for this reason. I normally LOVE mint, but I tried three juices that were too much like menthol to make me happy. Butter mint does sound yummy, though. Thanks for the idea!

Purilem (I think it's them) makes a mint chocolate chip (I usually add some extra coco, but not much) ice cream flavor that really is delicious. It has the faintest hint of "ice" in it, but mainly it's just a very subtle mint flavor. It's one of my favorites, although I do like mint chocolate chip ice cream) so if you are into deserts at all, that's one with some mint that I can sort of recommend....

It did encourage me to buy a bottle of menthol flavoring, I could see that tinge of "ice" being useful in some of my mixes, but I don't plan on adding more than about 0.5--1% to start with. I think menthol does "bring out" some other flavors, possibly, and not just tobaccos.

I mainly avoided it at the start because my son was a menthol and citrus vaper for his ADV, and it would make me queasy when he vaped in the car, and I was still a smoker at the time. I'm guessing it was mostly the citrus, and I tend to view menthol as something to be used sparingly for it to work (for me). Getting a 30 ml bottle for 79 cents didn't hurt either, I was like, "I am risking nothing at this point."

Purlium nailed the butter mint dead on; tastes and feels exactly like the real thing.

Another awesome suggestion. Thanks! That's my favorite ice cream flavor. :thumb:

Awesome, thanks!

I'm going to need to set up a gofundme account to support all these device, tank, and juice experiments!

There are some additives commonly offered by flavoring sellers that may diminish certain flavor and/or taste sensations in an effort to smooth or better blend ingredients. Like most sweeteners, I avoid these like the plague. Some commercial juices may also include them. Often mistaken for vapor's tongue or fatigue the effect is usually temporary. You may find one or more of the recipes you vape seemingly conflicting with others or producing the effect. Time to research what it's made of. This topic really deserves a comprehensive thread.

Good luck. :)

Yes, some flavors taste like campfire smoke to me. Usually it’s cereal or desserts.

That sounds more like accretion (build-up) on the coils DP. A sure fire signal that you need to re-wick, dry burn or install another coil. Lot less of these if you rebuild to a standard. But yeah, as it develops you will get more smoky, woody, scorched nutty elements in the recipe turning sour. Ultimately very smoky if not downright ashy.

Lots of folks vape right through that getting used to it with time in an effort to extend (tolerate) build/coil life (sorta like smokin down to the filter in my view). Best to head it off while you're still getting that great vape. In any case, you need to get to a properly working install to really diagnose any flavor or performance issue with the gear or the recipe.

Good luck. :)

When I first switched, I realized my tastebuds were pretty beat-up from smoking. It's like Apple Pie, I tasted some Apple, but it took me a good while before I tasted the nuances of the crust. In the last couple of years, I have been reducing flavor percentages.

Been up and down between very low and high flavoring counts in my DIY since I started. Kind of settled into a broad zone roughly 12'n 18% depending on how complex the mix. But accretion is a killer and it can destroy subtle accents like Fuji's bright fine cymbal-like notes in an Apple recipe. So rapid oxidation prompted by overheating, and it doesn't take much, is generally the culprit building up in the e-liquid itself as well as wire surfaces or quickly darkening a mix (often the precursor). A really a great challenge. Particularly to off-the-shelf commercial elements that can't easily be cleaned.

Good luck. :)

I don't know that I am a connoisseur of flavor. Heck, I've eaten oatmeal stuff off the ground and was very grateful. I just think smaller tanks and atomizer chambers work better...or longer where flavor is concerned...and juice in a a dark juice cellar. :)

Better a dark juice cellar than dark juice. Just can't stay away from those dang aged tabs. I'm a connoisseur of dirt it seems.

Good luck. :)
