Has anyone tried to sabotage your vaping?

I've been analog free for about a week now, and have been extremely happy with the results. I've mentioned to my SO how I wish he would give vaping a try but haven't been "in your face" about it. We've been together for over 20 years (living together for 10) and he smokes about 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day but not the same kind as I smoked.

Yesterday I mentioned that I had an urge to try a cigarette, took two drags and it was so awful I just put it out and came inside. His response was "that's awesome. Good for you!".

So I was surprised that he just came back from the store today and had bought me a pack of smokes. I asked him why he did that, and he said "because I smoked one of yours and wanted to replace it". When I reminded him I'm not smoking cigs anymore he just said, "Fine, then I'll smoke them".

I'll mention that for a period of 18 months several years back, he had quit smoking cigarettes after recovering from a lung surgery. He never tried to make me quit after the surgery although while in the hospital and in pain he did beg me to.

I'm not looking for any kind of psychoanalysis, but seriously...huh??? Anybody else here experience any kind of sabotaging or passive agressive reactions to your vaping?

My father in law has been giving my wife a really bad time about her e-cig. He quit 5 years ago all together and now is as judgemental and unsupportive as your average non smoker....always telling her that she hasnt quit and vaping is just as bad...a real jerk about. People are just scared of the unknown and therefore lash out at anything that is different.

Not yet. Family and friends have been quite encouraging and supportive of my vaping travels. These are all non smokers and they are very pleased that I have given up smoking cigarettes. The few smokers, whom I do know, are not aware of my smoking alternative.

I havent had anyone try and get me to smoke, but theres definitely a different reaction to quitting for vaping between smokers and non smokers. Non smokers are usually so impressed and happy that Ive quit, smokers are usually really negative about vaping, oh, I cant smoke that bs, thats gay, i tried a cheap viper disposable once and it didnt taste like anything so I dont want to hear anything else about it cuz theyre all just like that, no I dont even want to try it, etc...when you stop doing something people wonder whats wrong with them that theyre still doing it and feel inferior on some subliminal level so they try to hate on your progress. People do that about religion, or working out, or becoming a vegetarian, whatever, anything you start doing better than them in they hate on it and want you back at their level so they feel more comfortable with what theyre doing wrong.

There's nothing worse than a "Born again non-smoker" on a crusade to eradicate smoking.

Interesting to read some of the responses. The most support I've gotten has been from people at work, not my family or those close to me. even my mom who has never smoked and has always said she'd do whatever she could to help me quit doesn't really seem to get it. When I told her I hadn't had a cigarette in 4 days, her response was, "But you're still smoking that other thing, aren't you?"

Once I explained to her how many cigarettes I NEEDED every day she sort of understood. So like most of what I do, I guess I do it alone (except for all you folks here at ECF). I guess it's my habit to quit anyway?

I haven't been real public about it -- my intention is to stay low-key since I know that if I make it a big deal out of it, it could backfire and slow my progress. I'm still proud that I've come this far, especially for someone who didn't want to quit. I'll just overlook the BF's weird reaction. He might just be "testing" to see how well it works and that may make him more curious. At least I hope so.

My situation isn't so different to yours. No one supports me either. I think if i did get support on a regular basis then what would happen when there's no one around to support me. I don't rely on anyone to help. This is what i do now, and that's that.

My best friend said she'd still make fun of me but was super happy to hear I had quit smoking. Unfortunately, I've apparently talked too much about e-cigs (the hardware, juices, technical aspect, etc) and completely turned away my girlfriend from making the switch. I can't help it - I'm a geek when it comes to some technology. However, the more I learn, the more I can help her if she wants to make the switch. I wouldn't say she is supportive about it, but also isn't trying to sabotage me either - more indifferent. However, sometimes she complains about the smell of it if I'm vaping strawberry or something sweet - I find it funny since 1) she doesn't have much of a sense of smell and 2) she always smells like cigarettes. Sorry to hear you're in this situation, hope everything works out.

I see it as a test you had and passed with flying colors. Every time you are around another smoker you will be tested in some way. I actually have people ask me knowing I'm off the death sticks if their smoke will bother me. I say no-- smoke on I'll vape along with you.

Before I vaped and tried to do cold turkey, I walked by my old smoke spot on campus and saw a pack lying there that was still about half full - I just kept walking, but it was like the universe was testing me that day.
