I had the same problem and it turned out to be some kind of virus. I downloaded Malwarebytes anti-virus software, ran it and it removed the virus. I went ahead and bought the pay version so I could have the blockers running at all times. It works great and I haven't had a problem since installing it. Good Luck!!!!!

First as the others stated; if you don't already have one, get a GOOD internet security program such as: F-Secure or BitDefender.

Also, Malwarebyte Anti-Malware software is very good at getting rid of malware, tracking cookies and ad-ware.

Use a good browser such as Firefox or Chrome, both have add-ons available to eliminate the ad-ware and other junk.

Internet Explorer is NOT a good browser for avoiding all this junk.

Sounds like it's your system.

Why I don't use Windows ;)
Ditto. Started using Ubuntu in '09 and haven't looked back since. It's nice to be able to fix your own system by having access to code. And if you can't fix it it's a snap to reinstall. Plus, I haven't had any viruses or spyware. But that's more about my Firefox being loaded up with NoScript, Ghostery and BetterPrivacy. BetterPrivacy is for LSO's (Locally Shared Objects). Basically, it'll remove tracking that's embedded in videos then saved to your flash file.

Malware-bytes, CCleaner and Adblocker are your friends. It's definitely your system, else its your browser. If you're using FireFox, you might have bloatware. I made the switch to Google Chrome because FireFox constantly got these weird toolbars and crap popping up, and deleting them would work for a day, then they'd return. Never had that problem with Chrome, maybe you should try that :)

If the problem is REALLY bad and malware bytes doesn't fix it you can use something called ComboFix. You can download it for free and then run it and it cleans very complicated virus from your computer. It's safe to use, but it is a very powerful program that has the ability to reach deeply into your computer and change things and you don't want something like that permanently on your computer, so my suggestion is after using it, then uninstall it and only install it again when and if you ever need it again. I've used it a few times but now I have the free Microsoft Security Essentials that anyone with Windows can get these days and that works fantastic in real time protection so haven't had any virus problems since.

Also, if you think you are going to a website that you aren't sure about, and you are using Firefox, there is something called NoScript, a free app that when turned on blocks ALL scripts. That means that you can browse around a website to see if it's legit without the website being able to run any scripts, thus not being able to give you a virus.

Because what you probably did is you went to some website that was offering some unbelievable sale probably from China or Russia and it turned out to be a bogus site that just wanted to install a virus onto your computer. These virus makers are really smart. So they know since you were looking at ecig products that you most likely go to ECF, so the virus is programmed to pop up those ads when you go to ECF. Has nothing to do with ECF, it's just a virus on your computer that you got from something else.

Hope some of that helped.

I'm having pop ups. I've run full system scan several times on my Norton, and it's had no effect. What I find curious, is the first pop up, and it's a big one, is from HALO. I call BS!

    best regards, larry mac

Lol, maybe that's why there are so many Halo posts lately. Seems to be the place to go lately for cig-likes.

You have malware on the PC, please run a good anti-malware scanner and consider installing a good antivirus app.

There have been some good suggestions on this thread. If you need good security software then please consider checking the ratings of the software by using something like Gizmos Freeware, which is independent. The best-advertised apps (like Norton) generally don't do well in comparative tests.

    - If you install Avast a/v then you are unlikely to experience the sort of issues you describe.

    - If you don't have an effective AV and have malware (especially affecting a browser), then Malwarebytes is a good scanner/remover.

    - Avoid Internet Exploder as historically it has always been the worst browser for getting malware on a PC. Every new version is touted as being better than the last, but they still have a long way to go to equal others such as Firefox or Opera. Admittedly this is contributed to by the amount of attacks on IE and not on Ffox etc - it will be attacked most, because attackers figure that anyone using IE will be less likely to know about security software.

    - Outlook Express email app is just as bad (maybe worse). You will certainly get 10x more malware by using Outlook Express instead of something far more secure such as Thunderbird.

    - A good firewall is also useful, although the best, such as Online Armor, are too difficult for the average user to manage properly. Otherwise, make sure Windows Firewall is turned on.

I second Malwarebytes (the $24.95 lifetime registration that unlocks real time protection is a must!). Adblock plus is also a must. You can also run a virus protection program, too. I like Microsoft Security essentials for a free virus scanner, but there are lots of good ones suggested up topic.

I just ripped all the parts out of my desktop case except for the power supply and rebuilt it. After I installed Windows 8.1 and Malwarebytes I discovered on its initial scan that during my clean install on a brand new WD one terrabyte drive, I had picked up 125 PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) when I checked for updates! I failed to enter my license code when I installed MWB ... thought I'd do that later ... mistake.

The $24.95 registration turns on real time protection and blocks those types of things before they install. The free version lets them in and allows you to remove them after a scan. Pay the fee and stay clean, IMO!
