Hello everyone,

I've enjoyed reading posts on ECF for about a year now, gaining a lot of knowledge along the way. I thank everyone for their contributions to the forum. This is my first thread.

I started using RBAs a few months ago, and have no interest in using clearomizers anymore due to the quality of vape produced by RBAs, there's no comparison! So far, my best vapes have come from EhPro Kayfun Lite Plus (version 1 and 2) tanks, using 26 and 28 gauge coils, with organic cotton wicks.

I bought a few HCigar Kayfun 3.1 tanks, and decided to try one out last night. I always thoroughly clean new tanks using dishwashing soap and boiling water. After setting up the 3.1 with a new coil, I noticed the readings on my Ohm meter were flashing between 4.1 and 9. I realized this was due to the center post contact screw being recessed too far, causing poor contact with the Ohm meter. I adjusted this screw so that it stuck out a bit, and then then had a solid 0.8 Ohm reading.

The only thing I noticed that was different this time, compared to the other RBAs I've built, was that the center contact screw in the 510 connection was loose (the part that connects to the mod). It was wobbly and very easy to turn. After attaching the the 3.1 to my Hades mod, the coils were not lighting up. When I tried pulsing one more time, the button on the Hades became very hot instantly, causing me to have to drop the device. It shorted out. I took the 3.1 off of the mod, and noticed the 510 connection and that loose screw had burned out, becoming a dark blue and copper color.

The Ohm meter showed a 0.0 resistance before and after removing the coil from the tank, indicating a short. So I guess this tank is done. Hopefully the other ones will be ok. I guess the loose screw caused the short? The coil was built correctly, ensuring the negative wire did not come into contact with the positive deck.

Wow I'm very sorry to hear of your expirence! I absolutely love my kayfun. The short could have been caused by a number of things and no way I could begin to guess without seeing the build. I do want to say I'm sorry it happened to you. I had a short once while running a mechanical mod. The whole thing got so hot so fast. Luckily I was able to quickly act before the battery began to off gas. Look over the build carefully, and maybe you can be certain of the reason. I'm sorry it ruined your tank! But I'm glad you are alright and no harm was done to you. Shorts can be scarey. As a rule of thumb if the ohm meter jumps around with a reading it's usually a short. You want a good solid number. If I see jumping of readings, I rebuild right then to be safe. Again I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

Hi Realsis,

Thank you very much, I appreciate it! The loss of the tank is not an issue really. They're about $40, so no big deal. My only concern about it was the safety issue.

Your response helped me confirm what I initially thought caused this to occur. You indicated that as a rule of thumb, if the Ohm meter readings jump around, there is a short. My Ohm meter readings stopped jumping around and remained at a constant 0.8 after I adjusted the screw in the 510 connection. I made the screw come out further in order to create better contact with the Ohm meter. This proves that the coil build was fine, and the screw was the issue. The screw was quite loose, unlike any other tank I've used before. It wobbled back and forth, moving in and out very easily. I just took a look at the other two 3.1s I haven't set up yet, and noticed that the screws in the 510 connection are tight on those tanks. I'll try to build them and see what happens.

On another note, I think the 3.1 is more challenging to build than a Kayfun Lite Plus. I thought having holes to connect the wires would be easier than wrapping them under a screw head, but it seems the opposite is true on the 3.1 for two reasons in my opinion... If you tighten the screw down too far, the wire breaks. And its a pita manuevering the wire into the hole while keeping the coil in tact. And with the 3.1, you have to make sure that the Kanthal wire connected to the negative post never comes into contact with the positive deck.

I'm just curious to see what the difference in vape quality will be between the 3.1 and the Kayfun Lite Plus. If the 3.1 isn't better, I doubt I'll even bother using it.

Thanks again for your help Realsis!

You can also get replacement parts on fasttech...

I initially had some shorting on my 3.1, the resistance kept on jumping around on my VTR, then reading 0.0.

After recoiling a few times I realized that the problem was elsewhere, it turned out to be a burr, it was in the collection chamber part, somewhere between the central shaft and the wall. Removed it and no shorting after that.

Mine is a clone though, so I suppose the odd burr is expected...
