So here's an update:

I was straight up with them and politely told them that shipping would be crazy for something like that to be returned. They ended up giving me $9.99 in credit.

Personally I find that a fair deal. I get the price back and I get to keep the defective mod.

Now as soon as I see the credit on my account, I'll tear apart this bad boy and fix it myself :D

I picked up two at the sale price myself. Not terribly impressed honestly. One of them the screen went wonky during testing, just pixelated out, un-usable. Like you, taking the battery out reset it.
Battery life is a joke! Even using Sony VCT5's I did good to get 5hrs out of it. I've heard it's better in VW mode but I sure didn't notice it in the little time I've used them.
I've delegated them as backups to backups or for when I know a mod will get trashed or possibly lost, fishing, working in a really bad environment, etc.
A buddy of mine has one he loves and I bought it on his recommendation. At $10 plus shipping, meh, I'm ok if it gets lost (depending on the topper!), but if I'd paid $50-60, I'd be very disappointed!

To tell you the truth I am not impressed with Sony batteries. The Samsung and LG batteries I have last longer. While this thing does consume batteries faster then most of my other mods it's not terrible. I use mine all the time when working outside or on the go. The mod has not gone wonky since those first 2 episodes. For ten bucks you can hardly beat them even if you had to completely rebuild it. I like the idea of the beauty ring and other companies should have used a similar approach to differing 510 lengths. I have enjoyed using mine.:)
