If you're new to building
coils, it might be worth giving rayon a shot for wicking. I had been having trouble getting my cotton wicks right, tended to slightly over-pack them, leading to the dreaded burn/dry hit.
I was pointed towards rayon, it turns out to work beautifully for me. It wicks really well, and you're supposed to have a tight packing in the coil. The method I used that was failing with cotton turned out to be spot-on with rayon
With rayon the general suggestion is to trim the tails down a lot -- you can easily cut 50% of the tail thickness off and still have more than enough for proper wicking. I'm doing the tail thinning on horizontal
coils, though for vertical I'm just making sure to fray/feather the tail, so it spreads out on the build deck .
