Hey guys I was a heavy smoker for the last 15 years 2-3 packs a day depending on the day. Last week I picked up a evod starter kit and some blueberry and watermelon 24mg e-juice. Vaped for the first few days when I ended up with a super sore throat. Figured it was from to much nicotine so I asked the wife to pick me some light stuff up the next day. That day while waiting on some new e-juice I had smoked 15 cigs as I could not vape as it hurt to much. My cigs were really tasting funny and weren't like they used to be that kinda turned me off of them. So I got some captain black cigar e-juice at 9mg I find it kinda light but I can vape it all day and doesn't hurt my throat. When I'm really craving a cig I'll have a few puffs of the 24mg stuff and it seems to help. Now 5 days have passed with out tobacco and I'm feeling better and can smell again. As for e-juice I've been mixing the 9 3-1 with the 24 as if fill the tank and it seems to be taking the edge off. Need to get some more flavours soon. Looking forward to any advice u guy have and not smoking sure hope this works for me as it's been tough so far but I'm staying away from cigs.

Hi and Welcome to ECF! Congrats on quitting
happy-132.gif

You will find there is an adjustment period in the beginning, kinda like how you had to get "used" to smoking in the beginning. You will probably find a lot of help by staying hydrated (drink lots of water!) and by using 50/50 or higher VG ratios in liquid. I cant be more specific with the VG ratio recommendations bc you dont say what yours are - if you are at 50/50 try going higher VG like 40pg/60vg etc

Good luck and happy vapings!

Hi, and welcome to ECF!

The sore throat could be from high PG in the liquid you were using, and not the nicotine content. Perhaps try some with a higher VG blend so you can stil get your nic fix -- and believe me, when first quitting smoking, you need the nic since it's not absorbed the same way as when you smoked. You'll vape more often; don't let it bother you.

I smoked 2 1/2 packs of reds a day for 35 years and once I started vaping, I never looked back. I started with 24mg nicotine and didn't think I would ever drop down, but after a year did. But I needed the 24 mg to keep me off the cigs. And I began with a liquid line that was high PG and once I switched to a 50/50 mix, the sore throat/nostrils and scratchy throat went away.

Best of luck, and congratulations on quitting smoking. Feel free to look around -- ECF is a very large, informative but friendly forum with lots of information, fun and help when you need it most.

Welcome Mike!

Congrats on taking the steps to get away from those "stinkarettes". Hope you find that happy place where you get what you need to stay away from 'em, but don't have the ill-effects of sore/scratchy throat. You'll find that all kinds of new things will affect your senses - taste, smell.... whole new world :)

Hi Mike, and welcome.

Sore throat is pretty common when you start vaping. It might be your liquid was too high in PG for you. Have a look what the PG/VG ratio is and try somthing higher in VG. Make sure you drink plenty of water as well. Glad you've found an alternative juice that's working for you, but you might be able to get away with higher nicotine if you look at PG/VG.

One tip on trying out flavours - stick with small bottles for the first month or so, and don't throw anything away yet. Your sense of taste can change as you give up smoking and you might go off the ones you like now, or start to like any that you don't like at first. After that, you can buy better value ones in larger bottles.

5 days is a great start, good luck to you!

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot to learn. Sorry about the throat thing. I didn't have it. I started at 18 and now still 18. I like it better. I have several different vapes to use. I like that. I am getting away from the tobacco I started with. Of course now I am a cheesecake fanatic but that is ok. Still looking for the perfect cheesecake and I have to say Mt. Baker is the front runner. I wish they added some fruit to it. Otherwise it is really good. Anyway You will have fun here.

Congrats and sounds like you're on a good track!

Your quick recognition of the mixing & matching to custom blend is going to serve you well!

Particularly as has been noted, your initial nicotine needs, and flavor preferences are going to change as your body settles into this new mode of operation.

Another way to customize your blends, and in some cases thin-down the nicotine levels is with some vegetable glycerin from the drug store and maybe a bottle of a couple of your favorite flavors. Most of the on-line vendors offer flavors separate at prices like $1.40-3.00.

From what I have learned in my short-time since quitting a 43 year long, 2 pack-a-day habit, is that nicotine levels and flavor are very very important to solidifying your new role as an ex-smoker :)

Two vendors I recommend for flexibility, quality products, great prices & excellent service are Mt. Baker Vapor (10% discount code: vaporfrombaker) and Killer Juice (weekly 99¢ sales!)

 to you and your new life!

Mike, congrats on making the switch. You have had some good suggestions from people so far and not much I can add except to say do not be discouraged if you fall off the wagon and need the odd cigarette when the cravings are bad. If just one smoke helps you vape the rest of the time you are still miles ahead of where you were just a short time ago. Good luck.

There won't be no odd cigarettes. Just means I'm gonna have to vape harder.

to ecf Mad Mike. So glad you are here, but with all the wonderful people here.....I doubt you can stay mad. :sneaky: You have gotten some great suggestions. The only thing I would add is try new flavors and strengths. And if you can get them on sale. Here is a link that has some great deals if you are interested.

This is good advice. I "stocked up" on the first flavor I liked...I mean 20 bottles stocked up. After 2 months, when my taste buds and sense of smell changed, it tasted like...well it was awful. Sounds like you are already willing to try new flavors, fruit and tobacco, and you are comfortable with mixing different nic levels, so you are well on your way.

Believe it or not, sore throat is a common complaint among people who quit smoking by any method. It's not always the vapor "causing" it so much as some weird "withdrawal" from the thousands of chemicals in tobacco smoke.

My advice as a formerly heavy smoker is don't expect miracles. If you "slip" sometimes, you're human. Took me six weeks to escape cigs completely but now I'm past a year smoke free. Still can't believe it myself! :)

Finding the right juices and flavors and all to hit your personal "sweet spot" may take some time and experimenting. Don't beat yourself up if you "slip". Lot of us took some weeks to stop cigs totally.

Long as the trend is less smoking, you're going the right direction...
