New member from Atlanta, GA. I'm actually here because of my dad, who has been a smoker for the last 51 years (since age 11) and has tried everything to quit.

A few months ago, we were walking through the mall and saw a salesman vaping beside one of the e-cig kiosks. My dad asked me if I knew anything about e-cigarettes, specifically about the health benefits (I'm a pediatrician), but I hadn't encountered them before, so I said I'd look into it. I read up at that time and got back to my dad with what I had found - the potentially enormous health benefits of switching, the many unknowns, the near-certainty that e-cigarettes are much safer than traditional cigarettes, and my conclusion: that it was definitely something worth trying out. We left it at that, and he didn't mention anything else about it for a while. Over the years, I've learned not to push my dad when it comes to smoking - just give him the info and let it brew for a while.

Just after Christmas, he asked me a much harder question: "Where do I start?" I didn't realize what I'd gotten myself into until I typed "best brand of electronic cigarette" into Google. Whoa! I was bombarded on all sides with reviews, ads, youtube videos, and seemingly endless debates about topics I'd never dreamed were being debated - topics like PG vs. VG, atomizers vs. cartomizers vs. dripping vs. dipping, 510s vs. 808s vs. big batteries vs. mods, automatic vs. manual, and so on. I'm sure many of you know exactly how I felt.

At the brink of total confusion, I finally found the explanations, answers, and thoughtful discussions I was looking for here, at this forum. Thanks to the information I found here, I was able to steer my dad away from the rip-offs and in the right (initial) direction. My dad wanted something small and light, with no manual buttons, that looked and felt like the cigarettes he's been used to all this time. I gather that most new vapers start this way, so I didn't try to push him into 510s or eGo clones, even though I realize that he may eventually land there. He just received his RN4081 starter kit from aquavaporcig (a local company, for us) this weekend, and he is very happy with it so far. I've got my fingers crossed for a total switch - but again, I'm not pushing.

For all of you who have written the "Info for Noobs" threads and reviews of products, who have warned newcomers against buying from mall kiosks or signing up for "free" trials, who have continued to review and critique PVs that masquerade as cigarettes, even though you have long since moved on to bigger and better rigs: Thank you. For my dad's sake, I am grateful.

Hello and Welcome
You've done a great thing for your father. I tried so many things over the years to quit to no avail. I picked up an e-cig three weeks ago and had my last cig 4 days later. For me it was the mechanics of smoking as well as the nic. Now I get both without all the other garbage. And so many wonderful flavors to try!

Great that your dad is off the fags and on the vape CF18. I have been introduced to the vaping experence in the last couple of weeks. Not having tried a go on any vapes I googled a lot and like you say to much info " if that is possible". After a lot of looking and trying to get a grip on how the e cig or personal vaporiser worked I chose to get a pure smoker v3 from cloud 9 vaping. I am glad I did, I have since purchaced two more for my mates and started mixing my own juice as I love to fiddle with that kind of thing. No way will I need another analog, I am also finding that the level of nicotine I need is well below what I expected. All in all a very happy new vaper, Im sure your dad will stay of ciggies now to. Once again welcome to the forum I found it a good source of info like you.

Thanks everyone! I may eventually try mixing up some juice for him. It sounds like it would be fun to try - I loved chem lab and I also like to cook, and it seems like that would be sort of a combination of those two things.

Aeric, congratulations to you! It's great to see how many people are able to completely stop smoking with so little effort!

Stories like this are why I love this place. The immediate and positive impact to so many through the kindness and helpfulness of everyone on this board is incredible.

cf18, I did something similar for my father. I told him of my success and pointed him here and to where I picked up my current pv. I don't know if he made the jump yet but I'm hoping he will.

Congrats to you and your dad!

CF, loved your story and so glad for your dad and for him having you as a son.
There is alot to learn, but it appears that you have been doing your research
as you know some of the lingo already.
I'm with you as far as letting him see how he does with what you ordered.
If for any reason you see some sort of hesitation on his part or negative
comments from him, then it might be time to see what the next step would
be.

Glad to have you here and if your father uses the computer, it would be great
to have him here as well.

I hope that you see how vaping has helped so many people stop the analog
cig habbit. I was a 35 yr...1 1/2 or more pack a day smoker and only after
2 weeks of vaping, I laid them down and have not even desired or thought
about going back. There are thousands of stories just like mine here.

Hope all works out well for your father and if you ever need any advice or
assistance with anything, please let us know.

Thanks Granny! What has struck me the most is reading story after story of people who had grown so guilty of the monkey on their backs, and who had tried everything to quit and still failed, but who have now found something that was so effortless and miraculous that they have embraced it as a passion.

It's one thing to read medical and scientific data and realize the potential health benefits to a person's lungs, but seeing what it can do for a person is what really opened my eyes.
