Well you are right, an RSST is best used on a mech. Having never had an MVP I really can't speak to that. Yes, money is a hang up when it comes to vaping hardware. There are mechs you can get cheap, my cheapest one was $12, but if you go the mech/RBA route you will need the right batteries, a charger, ohms checker, kanthal, and mesh. That adds up to money, and if money is the problem you might have to wait a while. I think a Kayfun clone might be the way you want to go with the mod you have at present. I know they can be built higher than sub-ohm with silica.

Right now, I am vaping my brand new KFL+ Ehpro clone and it's the very coil I ever built. After a few mishaps involving gouging myself with a screwdriver (I'm really klutzy and may have gone overboard taking it apart to clean it) I'm loving this thing. Really nowhere near as hard as I thought. I used 28g Kanthal, some ecowick (? I think that's what it's called basically, pre cleaned organic cotton yarn) that I bought at eciggity when I bought the clone, and Rip Trippers chimney microcoil build. Wouldn't buy the yarn stuff again as it was incredibly overpriced, but it was very easy to use. Good luck!
I've been vaping 65 days now, I have an MVP and 2 clone mech mods, an RDA and RBA. There are several sites with low cost clones that are US based. For use on your MVP, a Kayfun, is the next step up. Your coils don't have to be sub-ohm, but higher than 1.5 ohms, and use variable wattage, for set it and forget it...
I have a cheap RDA for testing juice and to try dripping. Liked it enough to want something with a tank and got an RSST and then another. I use them on MVP and VV3. I make my coils around 1.5 and both devices have ohm readers. You can use cotton wick in the RSST to start out with until you get the mesh and torch and some practice with coils.

Paul, I'm shopping at KP as the guys at Desert Vapes ship only northwards...
Their service (KP) is excellent tho. I ordered a plastic RSST from them a couple of weeks ago —just to make the shipping charge worthwhile on some little odds and ends– and I'm waiting for the parcel this week (fingers crossed). I have mesh but also ordered some SS wicks in both 7x7 and 7x19 twists for the RSST. Do you have any experience with the material? Am I right in thinking the coarser mesh would wick better the thicker juices? Presently I'm leaning towards 50~70PG concentrations so my juices are usually on the thin side.

Kayfun/Russian, Tailfun, fogger V4, Flash-e-Vapor V2, any of those would be a great first rba tank system to have. Find the one that looks best to you and go with that.

Next time you order from KP, get the AGA post insulators that fit the top of the RSST. Stopped my leaks. They also have a pack of fill plugs. Both are around $2 USD.
RBA = tank style, RDA = dripper. If you have $30 to spend, I would suggest getting a Kayfun clone. You can find tons of Kayfuns in the $20 to $30 price range.
For a while I was buying new tanks every week and was never satisfied with any of them. A few weeks ago I finally picked up a Kayfun clone from a local brick and mortar shop and have been happy ever since. It holds a ton of juice (5ml), easy to rebuild coils on, has good air flow, doesn't flood or leak, can be filled from the bottom screw hole or by taking off top cap. Definitely worth ever penny.
Save yourself the hassle and pick up a Kayfun clone. Trust me, it's one of the best RBAs out there.
As for wire; 26-28 gauge kanthal is perfect, or if you're willing to fiddle around you can get some flat kanthal. If you decide to go with the Kayfun, stick with regular 26-28 gauge kanthal.

After a year of vaping, decided the best setup for me is Innokin iTaste SVD VV/VW with a Kayfun 3.1 clone. Great vapor from the RBA and can be in total control of how the liquid is vaporized.
Kayfuns are great and you an get clones for pretty cheap on ebay or other sites instead of going the fasttech route, which, while cheaper, can take forever. I like fasttech b/c you'll order something and then totally forget about it, only to be pleasantly surprised when it actually comes. I just got a fogger V4 and I must say, pound for pound, it's one of my favorite. Personally, I use RDAs mostly (Magma is my favorite thus far) and have largely given up on genie tanks. The RSST is a good starter but I always had hotspot issues b/c of the distance between the negative post and the wick. Kayfuns are great no-leak products and the KFL v2+ and the Russian 91% both have adjustable airflow, which is nice. If you prefer an airier draw though (like myself), it's still lacking but certainly improved.
