Removing the Heatsink on the Dell Dimension 1100 - YouTube

Looks like the same locking mechanism as what you have. Just remember if you do decide to remove it, you must have some new thermal paste to put on it.

And yeah, it looks like Dell's motherboards don't support any kind of temp monitoring which is kind of odd. When you're folding can you feel a lot of heat coming from the fan that pulls the air from the heatsink?

Thanks for the vid. I haven't watched it yet though. I've removed that fin box (is that the heatsink?) before and exposed the chip and the chip didn't look like it had had any glue of any kind on it. I put the fin box/heatsink back without gluing about 2 months ago.

Yeah, the big copper thing under the green shroud is the heatsink. The thermal paste isn't really a glue but more of a silver paste that just helps transfer heat from the processor to the heatsink. If there's nothing on there it may need some, but I'm not entirely sure it was necessary on the older Pentium 4's. I've never built a P4 rig so I'm not sure how hot they get.

In an oem setup it might look like a white flakey pad or glob. And TIM has been used for years even pre p4.

When the fan is running load there isn't much heat coming out of the back. Right now with F@H not running it is running quiet. I watch a vid awhile back and the link might be here in this thread...it showed how to apply that paste to the processor and he was working on my model so I don't know if it is necessary or if he just felt more comfortable applying it. I didn't take the heatsink off so I don't know if there is something behind it that actually touches the processor. I would assume there is since that guy was applying paste. I'll see if I can find that vid.

In that video the silver block he picked up that had the crusty gray pad is the heatsink. Have you removed that from your system like he did in the video? In your pictures it is the copper colored finned block.

I did awhile back but put it back without paste. I didn't take it out this morning because I didn't know how then and I don't feel like taking it apart again right now so I'll check later to see if there is cruddy paste on the back of the heatsink if I can get it out.

Gotcha :)

No worries, when you're ready we'll get you squared away.

In other news... all the stuff is hereeeeeeeee :D :D :D -- will be assembling soon, waiting for the current WU to finish. I opted for the bigger heatsinks this time to allow it to clear the ram. Looks like it's gonna be close!

If you have had it off before without using new paste then it really couldnt hurt to put a dab on there now. Lots of folks I know insist that any time you remove a heatsink you put new paste on the chip as the old paste is then less effective... And if you have had it off before then you shouldnt be concerned about taking it off again to add the paste :) You can get some at any computer shop shoot perhaps even radio shack might have some lol

I'm no expert, but I installed this yesterday and it looks like it's working. I see 222 points on that website, anyway.

One thing I noticed is that when browsing the forums, I get a "shockwave flash plug-in missing" message instead of the video when there's an embedded video - does this have to do with the FaH using lots of CPU resources? I set it to 90% CPU usage.

Yeah, I'll have to get some before I tank the heatsink off again. I think I was told 2 different kinds. What should I get?

I was getting that msg recently everytime I click on anything. I don't think it was related to F@H because it just started and I've been folding for awhile now. I just uninstalled the sucker. Now no more error popups. I needed it a couple times to view something but it wasn't work reinstalling and having those popups come back.

I usually use Artic Silver but mostly thats cuz I had a tube of it laying around I picked up at some discount store for cheap. Had that tube like forever and its still around here somewhere about half full I think... Anything is better than none so I wouldnt go to far out of your way looking for something specific. Even some cheap store brand or some such should work ok...

I just called the computer store near me and they don't have artic silver but they have something else that does the same thing. They are in 1gm pouches with no brand name on them. Do I want to take a chance on something I can't look up?

PM me your address and I'll send some to you. I have tons.

Edit: Reason being is a tube comes with every heatsink I've ordered for this folding rig. I've ordered four heatsinks so I have four tubes and really one tube is enough for maybe 10 applications if not more. Noctua NT-H1 if you want to look it up.

The new heatsinks make the old ones look like infants... they will be changed soon and then the overclocking begins!

nice setup loft.

I just started yesterday and about to break the 200 mark on the team. I've just been running with one system so far but set up 2 other machines tonight before bed.

I noticed in the settings where you can link your machines together to work on each WU together is that more effective then each of them working on a WU independently? (hope that made sense)
