I don't understand these short times to complete a project. I have the program set to run at 85% and it's going to take 15 days at this rate and since my fan is running constantly I'm afraid of burning something like my power supply, memory chips or worse..motherboard so I lower that % at night which will take it even longer to complete. I didn't think my PC was that slow.

Terry try doing the opposite. When you aren't using your computer, turn up the cpu.

Many of the WUs are intensive and can take days to be completed. As long as you get them in by the deadline, you will be okay and get credit for it.

The reason I turn it down when I go to bed is because I'm afraid something is going to burn up while I'm sleeping. If the fan burns out then my PC will over heat and fry everything. I might be worrying about nothing but I've burned out memory chips before just playing intense graphic games which I don't do anymore.

As far as the long completion time, yes, I think I got a large intensive project. I have until Feb. to complete it though. :)

In the description - what's the deadline? If it's that big is should be quite some time away....

That is a longggg deadline, Terry. I've never seen one that long before.

The reasoning behind my suggestion, is that your house is normally cooler when you sleep so your computer runs a little on the cooler side. By closing out all your programs when you go to bed, it will also help your computer run cooler.

Another thing is to make sure your tower is getting plenty of air flow. If you have it in a cabinet, then keep the door open, that helps a lot.

I kept my cabinet door open at all times when I was folding on my Dell XP. With my iMac I don't have to worry about that.

I don't know about window machines but those who are folding with macs can install this Fan Control program to help run your machine cooler. I set the rpms to 1600rpms and the temps for low 30C and 70C for high.

Download Fan Control for Mac - Hassle-free fan speed manager for MacBooks. MacUpdate.com

It works real good.

Terry, I don't believe there is a program like this for Dells. At least I was never able to find one.

If your fan is revving up that means it's doing it's job.

But if you're concerned you can pick up one of these on the cheap like and slap it into an unused expansion slot. If you're doing GPU slots you can aim it right at your vidya card and help keep it cool.

Most newish computers will shut themselves down before they overheat. Since I'm usually farting around on secondlife all day, I cut off the GPU and turn CPU down to 50% when I'm on it, and turn GPU back on and bump CPU back up to 100% when i roll into bed. So far my progress seems to be pretty good, did three work units since I started.

I joined in :)

(I'll probably have to turn it off when I'm doing things like..err..playing WoW... okay, that's really all i do that i'd have to turn it off for... but that means when i'm sleeping and all day when i'm gone..it'll be on.)

At least -- I think I joined. I hit the Fold (aka, play button)..but right now it says... nevermind, my first project just started.

It seems I have gotten big Jobs on both computers I'm running on... I have no four hour work units! Been a day and a half on my Mac Mini, though that's less than an hour away from wrapping up, and the one I got on my Macbook has a 17 day due date! Nothing as epic as February though! Man! talk about taking one for the team!

You kids and your small work units! YOu got it so easy! You just wait though... when these things wrap up on my machines.. My hind quarters are gonna rocket to the top of the leader board! Muwhahaha!!!!

Still need to get that old laptop up and running...

Hey quick question... how do I get more than one work unit at a time?
