I am sad that my first WU was such a large one. I want to feel like I have contributed something, and I know that the use of my excess CPU time is something, but I really want to complete it and see that I have finished the first of many WUs. Only 5 days to go according to the FAH control panel. Good thing too. It has a 7 day deadline.

I am also happy to see Team ECF jumping so high in the rankings so fast. Not because I feel this is a competition but because it goes to show what a wonderful community of people we have and the great effect we can have when we put our minds to it. I have never felt so connected to an online group as I do to ECF. :)

If it makes you feel any better...I think I got the biggest project of all. Mine will take 15 days to complete if I don't stop it for any reason. :( At least I have a very long expiration date, Feb 16, 2013.

Oh I understand what you're saying - it's just the "average" was 3x higher when I wasn't running 24/7...and my GPU was involved at that time.

I lost the link for the signature - like yours - and I couldn't find a number for myself - just my name and the team number....I feel like such a ..... and to think I used to build computers out of spare parts when it was all dip-switches and cards...and figuring out error codes by the beep sequence at start up .....

Yep exactly.. since it's a moving target you'll notice once you get a new WU they start out high PPD by mine vary greatly on the start and come down to level once they are about to finish. Also the GPU WU's are way more points and can be done while just using the general PC (not gaming/YT/etc) and even tho I do both types at the same time my SMP CPU work units only pull 2400-5000 points where was the GPU units pull 25,000-36,000. They have really utilized the CUDA core and instruction set on the nVidia cards. You can get good results with ATI but nVidia is where they concentrated and it shows.

You'll do well and it takes some time to just let these go and forget about it. I started a long time ago when Folding had just started and it was no where near the levels of output they have today. I got my first 500,000 points on CPU cores only and it took a good 2-4 years and I got the last 500,000 points in the last year or less of folding. Since I'm working now and using the home PC's less I figured I would toss a quick 300-500,000 points up for ECF and have fun finding a cure! :)

Cheers,
~Icky

None of the 11 clients I have running are using GPU for folding. Only SMP shows up in the folding slots on the FAH Control Panel. Does that mean none of my computers has supported GPU's? :(

11 !! eeep I only have 10 and I had to drop one out due to heat issues.. stupid laptop!

You might want/need to check your drivers for the video cards, if they have older nvidia cards without the CUDA support maybe it isn't picking it up.

Also make sure you selected SMP & GPU when you installed it.

Oh and also make sure to put the name as shades... I heard that really helps ;)

What video card do you have? I have ATI and I just had to join the FAH forum after reading for 2 days on the site, to figure out why mine wouldn't run. A mod responded w instructions to delete the slots and let the client re-download new ones that have fixes.:2c:

Would you please link or elaborate on this? Thanks ahead of time.

Here is my question post:
I have a 6 core gaming PC with dual Video cards. I set up the folding client a few days ago and ever since the beginning the 2 slots labeled GPU say "update Core" and also say "Ready", but will not start. I created an additional slot under SMP and set it at 2. The existing slot that was created by the program was at 6, I had to lower it to 2 because of the maxed out CPU usage.
I need some advice on how to proceed.

Here is their response:
There are several problems that need resolving.

My guess is that you ran into this problem, over the weekend, for your ATI video cards. The fix is to delete the WU's that have stalled your ATI video cards (The PG assignment servers that cause this problem have already been fixed). Pay attention the the work queue numbers for your ATI video cards. Pause FAHControl. Then go to the work folder (Start->All programs->FAHClient->Data Directory->Work) and delete the folders with the same numbers as those Work queue numbers. Un-pause FAHControl and it should go out and get new WU's that actually work for ATI video cards.

Next, With the basic SMP:6 +2x ATI GPU your CPU will be over-subscribed which will kill your SMP performance. You need to drop the number of CPU cores for the SMP slot from SMP:6 to SMP:4. This is because each ATI video card needs a CPU core all on their own to fold. So SMP needs to drop by at least 2. To do this you need to put FAHControl into advanced mode (Upper right). Then click the configure and move to the slots tab and dbl-click the SMP slot and change it to use 4 then save.

EDIT:

I added the link that they inserted.

Makes sense that the GPU would use a cpu core to run.. but then you are effectively reducing SMP performance. 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other.

Most of the PC's that I have F@H setup on, have Intel VGA cards built into them that do not detect GPU at atll. My home PC has an ATI, but I think it's not supported. I got one PC setup this morning that has an Nvidia in it, and it has recognized the GPU for that, and is running both GPU and SMP.

Ok, I just broke into the top 40. I currently have 3 clients and 10 processors running. One VMWare vShere client, one dedicated i5 and one Core Duo. I'm using the diskless boot CD in all three instances. I'm late to start so I guess I'll go power on more CPUs so I can catch up to the leaders.

Someone mentioned the SETI@home project and I agree. I used to have some great stats on that when I had a lot of horse power sitting idle. I need to see how many cuda ready cards I have and put them in a system to test with. Good stuff!

I needed a kick in the .... to put all this wasted power to use.

Whew! So, processing kept getting worse - this morning a WU went from 1 day to nearly 4 - all in the time it took to unload and reload the dishwasher  - so I uninstalled and reinstalled the software - hopefully this fixes things. Just waiting for the new WUs to start - and my GPU is back.

Make sure that you are monitoring your core temperatures. There may be something else going on that's causing things to slow down.

Actually this isn't really true it would be like swapping 6 beer for 6 24's ;)

GPU processing is much greater and crunchier of the big maths, you get a lot more out of your gpu for same time frame unless I am just trying to trick you to make sure I stay ahead :D

Which reminds me to switch to my OB video at home and leave the nvidia just for crunching...

GPU also has a lot more impact on the system though, I've noticed. Really slows things down while crunching. Or that may just be my aging pc's.. :)

No regardless of age of computer, even with SLI because windows doesn't have a system in place for prioritizing the gpu you are gonna be slow regardless

(so voices in head are telling me)

If I started listening to the voices in your head, we'd be in a seriously messed up place, buddy! Everyone on here already thinks Canadian's are a little .. how do you say it?! Whacked in the head!!
