One thing I learned the hard way; if you mess around with the slider your work unit will reset to the last checkpoint (or start over if it hasn't saved a check point) so play cautiously...

You can still pause individual cores from the advanced screen by right clicking on the folding slot and then selecting pause.

Time for me to ask if I'm doing as much as I can, given that I also have to use this computer for everything. I'm not folding on my GPU, and I am set up to use SMP 2. Does that sound right, or could I set up any differently to get better returns?

Can you change SMP to 4 and delete the GPU slot? If your not using GPU, you're missing 2 of your 4 cores in SMP.

It may not be much, but it will improve your productivity.

Use the gpu client with wine. That's free.

I was running SMP 4, but it had me too sluggish to use my computer for work and browsing. I've already deleted my GPU slot. I suppose I could push the percentage slider down a bit, but not sure that wouldn't defeat the purpose. I think my rig is like me...just old and slow

Thanks Dusty

That's surprising, because your pc specs are not that different to some of the computers I'm folding on. I've never experienced performance impact with SMP. Wondering if the AMD has anything to do with it..

Dusty, I wonder if it's because she only has 4gb ram with 2.5gb memory free?

I don't think it's the memory either. Bovinia's using about a 1.5 GB of RAM which sounds about right with operating system, browser etc being used. Folding on my PC is using approximately 170MB RAM.

Bovinia, do you leave it running all day? I can't account for your lack of points except for the fact that you're running 2 of your cores, and perhaps have it stepped down and not using 100% CPU capacity. That and the fact that you are running 1 or 2 machines. Looking deeper into your stats, you're averaging around 15 - 1700 pts per day which just doesn't make sense. :(

Holy crap! 1700 pts a day? It takes me a week to rack up that much. :(

I need an upgrade. How do you upgrade a pc to make it go faster without paying as much as it would cost for a new one?

The X6800 should average about 4000 PPD with all cores enabled running at 100%. Running x64 on that hardware will actually diminish the PPD but only slightly, not worth ditching ram and loading x86 Win7. If you're going to run only two cores you should be able to run them at 100% and not have any significant performance hits because you will still have two free cores to utilize for other things. You may need to manually set the processor affinity for the other applications you are using while folding.

And in a moment I'm going to post a hardware picture~ Just to keep myself motivated mainly... as everything is here except the motherboard for the 4P system I'm building! *sigh* Did I ever mention I hate money? lol

The 2nd machine is hubby's and he has his FoH off half the time. I do have SMP 2 running at 100% in the FoH config. I'm estimating about 16 to 18 hours a day, I do shut my computer down around 2am, but I have it back on usually by about 10am.

Should I wait until I finish this WU to set it back to all 4 cores? Or can I just pause, reset the SMP, and start it again? Thanks for everyone's input!

Just a quick picture... the start of the build will be with two AMD G34 6128 CPU's upgraded to a total of four in a month or so. 8GB ram per cpu, two Noctua coolers, Mushkin 40gb ssd drive and a seasonic 850w psu...

I still have to clean and lap the cpu's / heatsinks and then it's just a waiting game to order the motherboard.

I would wait until the WU finishes. Changing the amount of cores you use mid work unit can cause the unit to fail. Click "Finish" on your client and it will automatically stop working once it finishes the unit it is working on. Then you can change back to 4 cores.
