loft...would you look at these 2 PCs and tell me which would be best for folding. I am currently using the 4600. The 9100 is my old machine without a HD. When my HD crashed my brother gave me the 4600. I'm wondering if I put my current HD in the 9100 if it would be better at folding and not get so hot. Here are the specs for both.

Alright even though I'm new to this folding thing. have been messing with comp hardware for .... uh not going to say how old I am but do ya remember punch cards?

I can tell this section of the board will get me into A LOT of trouble. Between my vehicle mods, e-cig, and now this.. yeah trouble..... Some of y'all have some sweet builds. Maybe if I ever get finished with my off-road rig then I'll start of a serious folding setup.

Not quite old enough to have actually used punch cards but I do still have a Commodore SX-64 from when I was about 10 if that makes you feel any better. I also know what you mean about spending on folding rigs. I started with a Q9550, then upgraded to a 2500k, and now have a water cooled 2600k.

Hopefully soon I can be done spending money on pc's and e-cig stuff for a little so I can start spending some on this;

They're going to net roughly the same amount of points. They're both P4 systems clocked roughly the same. One may have more ram or the FSB may be clocked higher; from appearances your 4600 is overclocked by 500mhz but in the real world that's not going to be earth shattering between the two. It may also be related to your crashing... so while switching to the 9100 won't net you more points, it may net you more stability. You'll more than likely have to format/reinstall windows if you switch systems (or repair the MBR at the least) but it might turn out to be a pain.

I don't care about the points. My concern is with the heat if that is what is causing my system to crash. How do you unclock an overclocked PC? My brother, who is a Network administrator and PC guru gave me the 4600 so he may have tinkered with it. I know he upgraded the memory.

If I put my 4600 HD in the 9100 why would I have to reformat? What is MRB?

The 9100 is newer and only been used by me at home. The 4600 was a work machine so it has way more hours on it, not to mention that it is older.

tm it might be simpler to just find a little cheapo harddrive to put in the non running computer and set it up then you'll have 2 running computers :)

Yeah, I thought about that and may still do that. I have a duplicate copy of my current HD on an external drive so I should be able to just copy it over to the new HD without reformating, I hope. I really really don't want to reformat. :(

Well the internals of windows is based on the motherboard components - if you try to just move the drive from one computer to another even if they are very similar windows will be very unhappy and most likely unstable, with a worst case of not working at all and messing up the os to where putting it back in the orignal computer might not work anymore either. To set up the other computer would most likely need a fresh copy of windows installed which is why you would want to reformat the drive first. It would prolly be easier and less trouble for you to get a blank drive - it could even be a used one from a retail used computer store (prolly would be dirt cheap) and set it up as a completly seperate system. then you wouldnt loose what you have on the first one and could pick and choose which to fold on or whatever you need to do. If I was more orginized I would prolly even be able to offer you a drive but it will prolly take me several months to even figure out what what all I have here as I recently moved also and I dont have a clue right now what works and what dosent...

Well :censored: ! I really do not want to reformat. I have so many programs that have so many configurations that I would have to do. :(

My PC was fine until I started folding so the easiest thing to do is stop folding but I don't want to do that either. IDK what I'm going to do. :(
